Can anyone help to check what gearbox i have and what oil goes ? Many thanks

I have to disagree. I had changed oil in mine around 270k km. The stuff which my car mechanic flushed out was unbelievable. It stank like rotten feet. Oil for tiptronic costs around 25 quid per liter. You'll need 8 liters of it.

Who are you disagreeing with? Audi who say don't change it or me?

Obviously changing the gear box oil isn't as simple as buying 8litres of atf and a filter...
 
I disagree with Audi. Actually it is simple. You drain it, flush it and refill it again. Some places will use suction to extract the oil but it can damage your gearbox.

Let me know when he can remove and refit my v10 and gearbox in 8hrs..
 
I've got V6, not sure what you mean by remove and refit. Do you mean that on yours to do it the whole gearbox has to be taken out? You are welcome to a visit if you happen to be in Czech Republic. There are places where they will attach a suction pump to the gear box and flush it afterwards. However, it's not recommended. 20 hours on my car means replacing chain tensioners and chains as well if necessary.

Yes but you quoted my post saying it was 20 hours on the S6. Which it isnt. Then said your mechanic can do it in 8. Which he cant. ;) You cant buy a v6 S6.
 
Anyway - we got our wires crossed - there are no hard feelings :)

I would change my oil if i could. Sadly it isnt economic.. I changed it on my SL @ 90k and that was like treacle. I have no reason not to suspect the Audi box is the same.
 
flushing the gearbox oil on your S6 is the same as in every other Audi, no gearbox/engine removal required, your mechanic just wants to overcharge you, my RS6 V10 certainly didn't require such a procedure and neither does Audi implies that a gearbox/engine removal would be required. Please don't mislead people based on your mechanic's exaggerations which have no grounds.

Interesting that you say that as 2 specialists i wont name and 1 main dealer all told me it did need to come out... However my own mechanic - like you, reckons he can do it without any such messing about..
 
Well SJB Autotech in Basingstoke (Audi specialist ) have also now told me it does not need changing. Had my car MOT today at my local garage and the guy behind the counter used to work for Audi and basically said you could potentially open a can of worms and cause issues by changing the oil. Basically if it's not broke then don't fix it.

He went on to say that the gearbox is very reliable and the main tail tail sign that you are potentially starting to have issues in when you put the car into reverse and the car starts to judder.

that's absurd, how can you be so naive and believe that an oil can last forever? Obviously car manufacturers will state that it does not require a service because they must keep the maintenance costs low for the new owner, and it does so for the first 100k km or so and while on warranty that first owner is covered. But let's face it, an oil that can last for hundreds of thousands of miles does not exist, better be cautious and follow ZF advice, the gearbox manufacturer which is fitted to these cars, which says that oil should be replaced every 100k km or 8 years depending on driving style and climate conditions.

I've had cars with over 200k km on the clock still running the original gearbox with the factory oil filled, had the oil replaced and everything was ok afterwards as well, but for peace of mind and if the intent is to keep the car for a few years it is better to have an oil change done. One thing though, should someone want to replace the oil because of an already existent issue with the gearbox and hoping that it will get fixed, forget about it, it will most likely get even worse afterwards. Have it replaced and do it properly following the procedure while the gearbox is running well and as it should, wait until it gives any signs of abnormal running and it might already be too late!
