no surprises here then.

how ever its not my car, and i havnt had a chance to look my self, but thought i would go armed with a few ideas first hence this post. friend of mine changed his maf over the other day to a new one from GSF

as car had the usual maf issues running rich, intermittent 5 psi safe mode, stuttering under acceleration etc

he swapped the maf over to a new one, now when the car stars he says as soon as you touch the accelerator the car dies. no revving no nothing just tap it and it cuts out.

any ideas?

unplug the maf and the car runs fine.

gonna go put the old one back on later and see if that works. if so im suspecting its a faulty off the shelf one?!

havnt had a chance to clear all the codes from the car with vagcom yet as i have that with me.

but i though the maf was plug and play? no need to vagcom anything? unplug old one plug in new one, car learns new values problem solved..

so, any ideas let me know and ill check them when i get to see it next.

How does the car drive?
I have similar symptoms on mine, replaced the Maf but didn't solve it.
The other fault I have is G40, camshaft sensor. I'll replace this tomorrow and hope this will solve the problem.

With maf unplugged?

Car ran 'ok' useable but that's about it, no boost power etc.

As for replacing it, dunno. Won't stay running apparently

Is it a genuine Bosch MAF ? .Sounds to me like it's duff.
Euro Car Parts are doing upto 60% off parts over the bank holiday weekend.
Just had a look and you can get a Bosch MAF for just over £60 after you take off the £24 surcharge for a service return.

well what ever came from GSF its brand new bought the other day.

There are a lot of second make cheap MAF's around. They are not worth the money assuming they work OK in the first place, the correct running of the engine really depends a lot on the MAF. Only fit genuine Bosch items.

right ok, car runs. dunno what was going on there.

its a genuine bosch mafs as well, just to clear that up

how ever, for some reason the ABS light is on, the triangle with a circle over it (pretty sure this comes on when the car is run with out the maf?) if not and its totally not related to the maf I guess its a ESP or abs fault? but that's unrelated it comes and goes though, but was last on as ty

anywho, the car runs, but it started to smell a bit on the funny side as we where driving it back? not a burning smell, bit more of a eggy sort of fish smell?! (best way to describe it )

I thought maybe over fueling and making the cat hot? only thing I can think it would be if its to do with the maf etc?nt

vagcom is showing no faults in engine.

It is known for a faulty maf to cause a really bad fish and egg stench!

even though its a brand new maf? would it take any time to adjust to the new one? fueling wise etc? what actually is the smell?

clearing codes will reset fuel adaptions/learned values.
it should adjust as soon as its warmed up lambda wise.. ~80'c sometimes sooner

So what explains the smell?

Is that something that should clear with new maf? Or run it for a bit and I should clear? As the car has been running rich for a while now. Thinking maybe it would take time to clear anything the old fault mad deposited Or should it not smell at all from the get go?

Possible faulty maf from shop? Heard of that happening a few times. Is a Bosch one though.

smell is from the CAT trying to neutralise the exhaust fumes from an over rich mix

how ever, for some reason the ABS light is on

The light you mention is ESP not ABS... this comes on for various reasons including a bad MAF... the MAF is an integral sensor to the ESP system... if the MAF is faulty in any way then the ESP will get turned off hence the light..

Do not discount fault codes because they don't sound related as the systems on these cars are very integrated and a fault in any of them can have a knock on effect elsewhere

What are the actual codes? these do not appear to have been posted yet... (VAG codes not P codes as you have VCDS)

Sorry I meant the esp light.

there were no codes thrown up when we swapped the maf over. Just the bad smell.

(I did only check the engine codes though)

But the original codes which lead me to believe the maf was faulty are here:

So, purchased new maf, friend swapped it over before I got there (I should add this is his car and not mine) and the original problem happened which I stated first in this post.

He unplugged the maf to drive it to work as he had no choice and needed the vehicle (it's only 3 miles)

When I got there we re did everything with new maf, reset codes and car ran ok. But we noticed this bad smell is now occurring and with the esp light on.

Swapped back to older 'faulty' maf smell
Has gone but light remains.

If the ESP light is on and you haven't done this by switching ESP off then there will be a fault code somewhere... need to scan the whole car...

Will run a full test when home then.

Only thing that's throwning me is when you unplug the maf that light comes on anyway. Dosnt it not?

Sure I remember seeing it? It's been a while since I've driven the car. (It's my old one that I sold him)

Yep... there will be a code in there from that too...

...the fact it runs better with MAF off suggests this is indeed the problem... next step is to log airflow, fuelling etc to see whats going on..

This is what I came to the conclusion to as well.

And what with what you told me
To do in the previous post that i put a link up for, going very negative in one of the blocks etc.

We decided a new maf was in order.

New maf on = bad smell + eps light (which could be a coincidence)

Will fault code it and report back. =]

Also, could the plug be playing up?

A lot of the inner red type plastic that surrounds the pins is pretty broken.

If it's possible will any maf plug work? I'll try grab one from scrappies and solder it on.

Anyway to test them?
