A4 Avant S-Line Tow Bar Coding

Thanks - maybe I'll take a look at the instructions and have a go myself!

I was pretty handy with the tools a few years ago, just too lazy now and got bitten by a couple of 'simple' jobs that took days!

I fitted my Westfalia in an hour, all by myself.

Worst bit was holding the nuts for the front bolts that go through the chassis, the silencer is in the way and even with the rear mount removed and heat shield undone on one side it meant balancing the nut on a spanner and feeding it into the gap. I was very tempted to weld a long bar onto the nut!

Puling the perfectly painted rear bumper off your pride and joy is always a concern......

Hello. Just to give a little feedback. I fitted the westfalia detachable towbar and dedicated 7 pin electrics to my 2012 (facelift) a4 b8 avant s-line. The car is 2.0 tdi 143 bhp, 6 spd manual, only reverse sensor, concert mmi (no nav or picture of the car while parking). The car was not factory prep, so no bigger fan & no red plug in the foam (not plug and play). I am not going to tow fat trailers or caravans... so I am not worried about overheating.

Fitted following the instructions:
Mechanical side is very easy following the instructions. I just did not cut the valence underneat the bumper as big as the instructions.

Electrical was more tricky has it is not factory prep, so just follow the instructions step by step.
My car is 2012 onward (no red fuse holders), so you had to join a cable to the electonic parking brake module. I havent come accross this on any forum "how to".
You have to "join" to the small gauge black wire pin 22 of the EPB. It is a +12v after ignition. I soldered and heat-shrinked it instead of the vampire crimped supplied. I think the procedure is the same for Q5 <2012.

Then when you reconnect your battery you get the usual esp error.

I coded as rhino7 (Thanks a lot for your help). In order to code properly (for newbies), ignition on, handbrake on, engine off, and a battery charger on is best. My car being different than rhino7 and newer it coded slightly different:

[19 - CAN Gateway]->[Installation List]->Tick 69 - Trailer (I have done this one first as it will ad the trailer module to the canbus system.)

[01 - Engine] NOT DONE AS I DONT HAVE THE DOUBLE FAN OR HEAVY DUTY ALTERNATOR
[Coding - 07]->[Long Coding Helper]->Byte 4, Bits 0-3 Changed from 0011 to 0100

[01 - Engine]
[Coding - 07]->[Long Coding Helper]->Byte 5, Bit 4 Changed from 0 to 1
(via check box "Trailer Installed" in VCDS)

[03 - ABS Brakes][Security Access - 16] (Enter code presented by program)
[Coding - 07]->[Long Coding Helper]->Byte 1, Bit 7 Changed from 0 to 1
(via check box "Trailer Hitch Installed" in VCDS)

[09 - Central Elec]
[Coding - 07]->[Long Coding Helper]->Byte 18, Bit 5 Changed from 0 to 1
(via check box "Trailer Hitch Installed" in VCDS)

[10 - Park / Steer Assist] NOT DONE AS MY CAR DOES NOT HAVE IT
[Coding - 07]->[Long Coding Helper]->Byte 0, Bits 0-3 Changed from 0000 to 0001 [Trailer Hitch Not Installed to Trailer Hitch Installed (Manually Removable) via pull-down list in VCDS]

[5F - Information Elec] NOT DONE AS I ONLY HAVE CONCERT RADIO
[Coding - 07]->[Long Coding Helper]->Byte 10, Bit 5 Changed from 0 to 1

[69 - Trailer] I think it is byte 1, you have to pick within 3 choice of location for trailer set up. It must have something to do with the trailer lights. Being in Ireland, I picked "Rest of the World"
Then i bought the towbar holder 8T0 011 213 B for €13 in Audi and now it fit snug beside the spare wheel.

All went well. Just a big thanks for all the infos in this forum.

I thought they all came with 2 fans now?

When I was coding mine
[01 - Engine]
[Coding - 07]->[Long Coding Helper]->Byte 4, Bits 0-3 Changed from 0011 to 0100.
But as found was 00100100 so did not change

Hello. Mine has only one electic fan on the left. The empty space for the second fan has only some kind of louvres instead. I would have to plug her back in to get the byte 4 coding. I ended up having this engine coding : 1219401223340108000.
Would that tell you? If not i will try to plug her at a later stage. I think the double fan must only be for the plug and play car with the red plug. My car is Irish, and they are usually lower specs than most uk. That might be the difference about the fan?

My 13 plate B8.5 had the red plug and 2 fans, as did my 10 plate B8. I have not checked the fans on my 65 plate B8.5, that does not have the red plug.

Hello Zafi. My engine coding for byte 4 is 00100011.
I dont have the twin fan, so I dont really want to change that setting. Maybe if one day I come accross a double fan from a breakers yard I might think about upgrading I am very surprised that audi removed the visco-coupler fan. My a4 b6 had one and twin fan. It must have something to do with CO2 emissions.

Hello,
Apologies for posting here, but im in need of some help/advice.

I have an audi a4 (b7) 2008. 2.0tdi s line, with reverse sensors.

Purchased 3 years ago and I'm wanting to tow a trailer.

It already has a detachable westfalia towbar and a 13 pin power socket that swings down from the bumper.
The trailer I'm wanting to use has a 7 pin socket. So I bought a 13-7 pin adapter from screwfix.

Only problem is the lights on the trailer tail board aren't working.

I've checked in the fuse box under the steering wheel and fuse 27 (30A) towing assembly was missing so put one in. Also fuse 32 (15A) is missing but doesn't have the metal connector bit where the fuse goes in.

I've got out the multimeter and conducted a test following this link
https://caravanchronicles.com/guides/13-pin-socket-basic-fault-finding/
It works as it should do, up until when I start the engine and then test for the lights and indicators, which no power is shown.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Has it got the Westfalia/VAG box which plugs into the red plug on the right side of the boot or a universal relay patched into the wiring?

It is a b7, they dont have can modules? Don't they? He must have a faulty universal relay / wiring.

Hello. I just discovered another bit to tick in my towbar coding. I was looking around module 46 "central conv" long coding helper when i stumbled accross byte 12, bit 5 : "trailer hitch control module ( J345) installed".
I just ticked the bit and saved. I dont know what this bit does yet, but being related to the towbar retrofit it can only help.

Here is the long coding helper.
