Heard this one before right.... maybe, I hope so.

So my car engine gets too hot and cuts out the A/C.

I wouldn't really notice the problem except the A/C cuts out.
I think the cooling fans are running at the wrong temperatures.

A/C off- the fans run at high and low speed , however, low speed cuts in at approx. 115C and high speed above 121C. This usually drops temp to about 99C then heats back up to about 115C in about 5 mins and repeats the cycle. ( it usually doesn't go to hi speed unless I do a lot of stop start driving).
This only happens during the day at night it rarely hits 110C max as it is much cooler weather (usually runs about 99c max)

A/C on- fans run at low speed ( always) and don't see high speed as it does not go above about 110 or so.
(The A/C cooling cuts out about 110C or so and comes back on when it drops to 99C)

What has been done:
Cooling pump replaced 18 months ago (before this problem).
Large radiator fan replaced 8 months ago (before this problem, overheated in traffic, replaced non working fan).
Thermostat replaced 2 weeks ago (first thing I did when this problem started, can see result the of thermostat opening on the gauge and appears to be working as it should).
o-ring replaced on sensor as it began leaking steam over 121C.
Cracked cooling flange replaced yesterday as I began losing coolant.

Things that may be important or irrelevant:
The temperature (readings) on both the gauge and the 49c always both drop instantly from 121C to 99C.
It is very hot weather here.
Car runs normally otherwise.
I am confident there are no airlocks after doing above replacements (this may also cause the symptoms I am experiencing).
I am aware the 49C sensor location is before the radiator and likely hotter than actual.
The 51C (engine temp) reading maxes out at 75C.

What controls the fan cut in temps?
I suspect I need a new thermal switch to control the fans? ( maybe poor contact with coolant?)
Does this model have a fan control module?

Input much appreciated.

Pete

Hi

Checking the Thermal Switch would be a good start and yours looks out of the normal range.
Low speed should kick in from 80something to 97c and High speed from 98c to 105c.

Hi

Checking the Thermal Switch ....

It seems to work/switch but at the wrong temperatures. Just ordered a new one which will arrive later in the week and I will see if that's the issue. Otherwise I am not sure where to look next.

Good. That should fix the overhearing because the low speed is controlled by the thermal switch and the high speed controlled by thermal switch and Fan Control Module.

Cheers Rial , That is good info, it makes sense it would be the thermal switch then.
I am still waiting on delivery... sux to live in the middle of nowhere.
In case I need to know. Where is the fan module on my car ?
There is nothing under my battery? Maybe somewhere else on my model. What does it look like?

Fitted the thermal switch today. Looks good so far.
It cuts in the low speed at about 105degrees C on the 49c (gauge doesn't move above 90degrees C). I cant get it to the high speed even covering the radiator the low speed still brings it back down. So I think I'm good, assuming the 49c is reading higher than the thermal switch (as its sensor is at the top of motor).
Cheers for all the help. I will post again if any further issues.

TIP: The Thermal Switch is an unusual deep socket size 29mm (Fyi = truck wheel nut size). I purchased a 29mm HARON plumbing faucet tube spanner from the hardware store and it fitted fine and was much cheaper than buying a deep impact socket, which seemed to be the only other option.

Damn, I spoke too soon.:frown:
It is still getting too hot. I have noticed lately it just seems to happen once after stopping for a couple minutes, like at shops etc.
It runs up to 121c on the 49c and gauge goes up too, sometimes hi temp alarm. If I leave it idle or drive on it cools back down within a couple minutes to about 100c and stays there until I stop again, where process is repeated.

Waterpump you say? It cools down whether I stop with the engine idling, revving, a/c on or off or if I just keep driving, I also get water dripping back in the reservoir and the bottom radiator hose heats up which also suggests the pump is circulating water. (and also the waterpump was done about 12 months ago with the timing).
Also if I leave it idling when waiting at shops , etc, it doesn't get hot, only after I stop the engine for a couple minutes.

Is there something else that controls the power to the fans besides the thermal switch?

I am thinking of bypassing wiring staright to the thermal switch and see if that fixes it?
Is there a fan control unit on my model
? It is a late facelift A3 8l (2003) AUM motor. and definitely nothing under the battery.

Cheers for input

Any joy with this Pete as I'm having similar issues, no Aircon no afterun on fans after driving hard, I thought aircon needed regassing but Aircon place said there's an issue somewhere as there machine won't let anything regass
