Hi all, my S3's power steering is having a hissy fit. On idle the pump and set up makes a hell of a racket, I replaced the fluid to no avail and have also changed the pump to a known working one from a car I got to drive. It's still making a hell of a lot of noise, the fluid is foaming and going crazy in the reservoir and has dumped all the fluid out twice. Before I jump in and change the rack can anyone think of anything else that can make the system go a bit nuts?!
Cheers

My guess is an air leak in the system, although I'm no expert.

Took this from Google,if it helps...

The 'foaming' you describe is almost certainly air getting into the system. The power steering pump will cause a suction effect in the pump and then pressurise the system. Look for loose hose clips, damaged piping, and leaking seals on the pump body between the pump and its fluid reservoir.

Maybe worth checking all the seals/pipes/joints before changing the rack.

Thanks very much dude, I hadn't really given that a huge amount of thought, I just changed the pump out and the problem is still there so garage said rack! I have a spare rack I was going to fit today but think I'll go over everything a bit more closely :)

Check the power steering cooling pipes which run at the front of the car underneath, prone to splitting and leaking. That was the cause of my issues.

Thanks dude, I'll check that first thing. I've been fiddling with it all day and still frothing like mad!

Just because it's the most annoying thing in the world when someone doesn't end a thread...
After getting annoyed and changing my steering rack on my back in the rain on the driveway, this made no difference...i removed all my pipework and cleaned then pressure tested it...no result. I got proper pi%£ed off and fitted yet another pump ( number 3 ).
Problem sorted :)
Cheers for the pointers fellas
