2.0 TFSI Known Oil Consumption problem - 2015 ongoing thread (2009-2011 models)

Im surprised, i guess all i can say is they dont build them like they used to. I had a 91' 300E and that thing lasted 20 yrs before anything went wrong with a gasket or piston. Smh i love my audi tho thats the worst part i dont want to get rid of it.

Funnily enough after I had gone through hell and back to get my car fixed for free; I said to the person who was dealing with my repair, that I don't have any of these issues with my 21 year old convertible. His response was, they don't make them like they used to!

Don't get me wrong, I think the new Audi's are lovely. I still pine for the RS6, but the last two new Audis I had felt like they were Alfa's in disguise

Hi Mitch.

How is the oil consumption on your car? is it any better after the repair?

My car failed the First stage today. Around 200 miles driven. Taking the car to the dealer for the second stage tomorrow.
Hi, sorry for the late reply havnt been on for a while. Since the work has been done the car has been fine oil hasn't moved so glad it's sorted. I did notice smoke on start up and occasionally when I dropped down a gear. You could see it in the rear view mirror sometimes. Hope you get yours sorted it's just nice not to have the problem now.

Hi all,

New to the forum purely because of this issue. Like many people on this thread I bought my 2010 A4 Avant 1.8 TFSI without any knowledge of this issue! I thought I did my research, but clearly not! I've had an A3 TDI for 15 years previously and it was unstoppable, I loved it, so I assumed a car 8 years younger would be even better... how wrong could I be! 3 litres of oil in 1500 miles, smoke coming from the exhaust and tail pipes and lower bumper completely black. Car has only done 39K and has a full Audi service history apart from 1 independant stamp who I have contacted and they have provided details of the oil used.

I don't want to rehash things that have been discussed multiple times already but Just looking for some clarity as there seem to be many different experiences out there.

- What oil do Audi deem the right type of oil to use? I'm no expert on this matter and what is detailed in the manual seems to be called something different these days.

- The car is booked in for the first part of the consumption test later this week. I assume like everyone else I will be asked to go off and drive 600+ miles and return. Any tips on driving during this period? I've seen most suggest back road, stop/start routes as opposed to moterway driving.

- If the car fails, as the owner do I have to do anything or do Audi automatically comeback to you with their decision concerning work etc?

- Lastly, does the fact that the car has low milage (I'm assuming it's low for a car of it's age), does it work in my favour?

Any insight would be much appreciated. I will of course keep you updated on my experience and results!

Fingers crossed!
M

Hi
As far as the grade of oil is concerned it should be 5w-30. If it fails the Dealer contacts AudiUK who are the ones who pay for the repair, not the dealer. The dealer gives AudiUK the results of the test. They (AudiUK) should approve the repair and pay for it in full. When doing the 620 miles try to do as little motorway driving as possible as this uses less oil.

Good luck.

Hi All,
Brand new to the forum, just found it today whilst doing some research for my Audi. Be gentle with me!
Unfortunately I believe that I have an engine with the oil consumption issue detailed in this thread. I purchased my Audi in February through a private sale but it has an Audi approved warranty until June this year. It is a 61 plate 1.8TFSI A4 S line with 73k on the clock and FASH.Up until recently i have been delighted with it (my first Audi after many years driving a Mazda)
I have had two issues which have caused me to organise a two day booking with Audi for next week. It has went through 3 litres of Coolant since purchase and i am now on my 3rd litre of oil. First Litre was approx 500 miles and 489 miles for 2nd Litre. I have the blackened exhaust tips others have commented on.
My question is this : Has anyone had any recent experience of this issue with Audi Belfast? How did they deal with it? Also, is the coolant issue likely to be related? I have used the correct oil and coolant. Should i also contact Audi Uk?
Last but not least ,with the FASH and warranty should i get all repairs for free?
Many thanks in advance for anyone that can help.

Hi,

I can't personally comment on Audi Belfast but my car had the oil and coolant issue too. The oil issue was fixed for free (engine rebuild - no warrantly but FSH) and whilst the engine was out for the rebuild, I asked them to change the water pump (I paid for the part). I believe there's a problem with the early water pump model. My oil & coolant levels have not dropped at all since the repair - around 7k ago.

Audi dealers know all about both issues so should guide you through the process once you've informed them.

My car is losing oil from what looks like the timing chain cover. Is this issue related to the manufacturing fault in this thread or something else?

Hi , thanks for the reply. I had a brief chat with my local Audi dealer today and they didn't really commit to too much , said that the service manager would deal with it . Did confirm that the consumption test would be FOC at least. Good starting point anyhow. Also stated that if the test failed that the repairs would not take too long.Probably got plenty of recent practice!

Hi guys, just bought a 2008 2.0tfsi A4 and am also experiencing high oil consumption issues. Car has full service history but last on was from an independent but the car is on 142k. What is the likelihood of Audi doing a goodwill repair given the mileage?

Best advice is to read through the thread. There is lots of great info from many different people who have experienced this issue. As you are out of warranty I would suggest talking to Audi Uk first before going to a dealer. They will decide wether or not there is any goodwill contribution and how much you will pay most likely.

Read this forum and decide if you can't go through the repair process. If not walk away. I loved my old audis but the current vag models are ****! Hand built engines are the way now and no Audi still wouldn't keep up. Bye Audi - Hope those in CS are viewing! All those conversations trying to get a tfsi fixed because it was fitted with the wrong parts!! Tut tut

Hi all, new to the forum and new to Audi ownership. Just bought a 2008 A4 S-Line Quattro. Moved over from MG ownership so is a 'bit' 0f a step up!! Really concerned that my car is affected by this, the car is obviously out of the 3 year warranty but the car is only on 58k miles. Hoping that I can get this resolved.

The service history is all Audi service with the exception of one. Also one of the previous owner has taken it to Audi with oil consumption concerns, with the only action being a top up and to return if the oil is low again.

This would be a real kick in the teeth if I have to stump up the repair bill. But I will speak to Audi UK on Tuesday. I hope the low mileage and service history goes in my favour.

Thanks for having this thread availible as it has provided valuable information for me. Just wish I had known about it before I bought the car.

Other than the oil issue, I ****** love the car.
Matt.

Good plan Matt, always speak to audi UK first before approaching any dealership.
It is the best plan of attack.
You will then be booked in to your dealer of choice for an oil consumption test, again apparently lol.
Your only obstacle will be proving the use of the correct oil from the non audi service, if you can prove this then it should bode well.
Good luck and keep us updated, knowledge is power, as they say!

Just to update my situation. My coolant issue was related to a faulty water pump replaced FOC by Audi Belfast under Audi approved warranty. Also I have started the oil consumption test which was also FOC as people on this thread had stated it would be. I have already been told that my engine rebuild will be done free under warranty if it is required. So far so good. My steering is quite heavy cornering so I might get them to have a look at that also before my warranty runs out.

So.....
I have called Audi UK, not a hugely helpful initial call but I managed to speak to an advisor that confirmed that the oil separator and crankshaft seal were replaced in 2015 due to high oil consumption. This was done On ref WAR/REP and was FOC. This would have been competed outside the warranty. So that fills me with a bit more confidence that I can get a repair if needed.

My issue is that it doesn't seem like it was the full repair and also it is still using oil. I guess that it could only help my cause if the remidial work didn't fix the issue. I am going to book the car in for the oil consumption test and go from there.

The advisor did say that if there was a fault with vehicle they would contribute if the fault was due to faulty parts etc.

I'm a bit more optimistic now.

To Be continued............

Cheers,
Matt.

Thanks to this thread and advice of members I was lucky enough to get my 10 plate A4 fixed by local Audi dealership at no cost to myself!

They replaced con rods, pistons etc after it failed miserably the oil consumption test.

My question is however, is it basically a new engine with replacing pistons and con rods? It's now done 67k (3k since being fixed) So guessing really the engine has only done 3k, an I right??

I have started my consumption test (200 miles in) and to my amazement the mmi gauge hasn't budged an inch! This despite having burned 2 litres in less than 1k miles previously. The only change is having the new water pump fitted. Is it possible that the faulty pump was causing the excessive oil burn?My other thought is perhaps that the oil was 'overfilled' prior to test and that is why the gauge hasn't moved.I suppose i will find out soon enough!

Good luck to all those now experiencing the engine failure on this thread. Just remember it's not a 'selected few engines' their all bolloxed!!!! Iv moved on but Audi still haven't resolved this!
My faith in Audi has gone however I wanted a proper fast car that wouldn't burn oil. You listening Audi UK?
Nearly 6 months on with the new GTR hasn't disappointed and not used oil. Lots of fuel yes.. The looks it gets is staggering and performance is absolutely astounding.
Anyone ever get the chance to drive or buy a GTR R35 do it.
Those reading either buy an R35 GTR (no oil problems) or a b8 tfsi.
It's a joke like the Audi handling of the engine problem! I'm done with Audi
Never buy a tfsi from 2008-2016!
Their all slow anyway

Wow...I was going to post a new thread asking which would be the safer petrol - 1.8tfsi or 2.0tfsi. I was aware of the oil burning issue hence the question. But having stumbled across this thread I'm not so sure now...What's wrong with German cars now - the VW 1.4tfsi has issues, BMW's N43 petrol and N47 diesel have timing chain issues? Must I buy a Ford or Vauxhall?

oh boy after coming from a 170 tdi i find this, can someone tell me of the face lift b8 2.0 tfsi from 2012 is effected?

thanks in advance

I could be wrong but I've a feeling the problem was rectified on the 12 plate an above

Almost completed my oil consumption test and pretty sure I have failed it, will find out on Monday. After a slow start the MMI gauge plummeted!
Im hoping that everything will get fixed to my satisfaction. Gonna have to read through this thread again.

Is the 1.8 TFSI affected by this oil consumption problem also? I'm looking into buying a B8 circa 2008 - 2010. And is there anyway of avoiding it? Surely not all of the Audi A4's on the road are affected?

Mine is a 2011 1.8TFSI and as of yesterday has failed its consumption test. Just waiting on Audi UK to confirm to the dealer payment so that my engine rebuild can go ahead.

I'm completely new to this forum .
I only discovered it this morning.
I recently bought a 2011 1.8 tfsi and have noticed it going through oil and blowing a bit smoke if I give it a bit of oomph !! It had an oil change only 4 weeks ago and it barely shows on the dipstick!
It's done 68k miles with full , part Audi , service history .
It's still under the independent dealers 3 month warranty. I have made them aware of this problem.
I called Audi uk this morning and explained the situation . They booked me into our local Audi dealer to have the fuel consumption test set up on 16th June .
If it does fail the consumption test can anyone advise of the next steps to take ?
By the time I've done the 600 miles or so required the warranty that the independent dealer put on the car will have expired .
Is there any excuse for Audi not to rectify this problem ?
Cheers

My 2011 1.8TFSI A5 (60,000 miles) failed with 1.41 litres per 1,000 km. because the last two services since one done in July 2014, were done by me which I logged and have dated receipts for the correct parts and oil, Audi say this is no proof that I used them and I will have to pay the full cost of repairs. (Pistons and con rods).

Below video is my story with my audi A4 tfsi quattro, year 2010:

I have just started a campaign about this oil burning trouble. Please watch and show your support on this effort. I am trying to make a big wave enough for Audi and Audi Turkey to take an action.
Thanks,
Wish you solve this problem easily...

Hi can anyone tell me the process - part 1 / part 2 and work normally carried out after and recorded by Audi?

I'm a 2.0TFSI owner and in 2 months and 1500miles my oil level display has not moved one milimeter from showing completely full.
Getting slightly paranoid the display is not working and lack of dipstick I called Audi UK and local Audi to check if it's had piston rings replaced.

What I found out from my Local Audi dealer is it had been in there for the Oil Consuption test in 2013 . Part 1 in march then part 2 in April .
But no other info was on their system for the outcome or work done.

Before that call I'd called Audi UK and they said they do not have any info on any waranty work carried out a Dealers, as that's only recorded at the `Dealer.
I find this surprising as Dealer would have to get Authorisation from Audi UK and Germany and I'm sure they have record of every car which has been in for the test and fix, at least for their accounts or R&D.

I'm hoping it has had the fix as it has not been using any oil.
As imagine if owner before me took it in for the test they must of been concerned with its oil consuption.

Hi Klickflip,

My understanding is that Part 1 is when they drain the oil, measure it and replace it. Part 2 is when they measure how much oil was used after you have done 620 miles. I also thought that Audi have a centralised record of work carried out by dealers. This is used to alert you when an MOT, brake fluid change etc. Is due. It might be worth trying to contact them again or another dealer. If that fails try the central customer services.

Hi,
If the car is not consuming the oil eccessively don't worry, it might have been had repaired by its previous owner in some way.

Exactly what I'm thinking , as it's not appearing to use any oil in nearly 2000 miles!
F0r peace of mind I'd like to know tho.

Have read through much of this thread and from what I have read it seems that my car has this issue as well.

Hello. Im located in New Zealand and I recently bought an 09 2.0 TFSI Avant Estate 6 speed manual with 96,000 kms, (64 k miles) and have owned it for less than two weeks and I seem to be having oil consumption issues. Car passed stringent pre purchase check before purchase and car has 3 year mechanical warranty also.

Minimum oil level warning came up on dash saying to refill oil within 100 kms. Rang dealer who said that he had filled oil level to full before we drove away in the car. Car had traveled 530 kms at this point. Took the car to a mechanic friend who had to put 1 litre of oil to fill it back up to full. Contacted dealer about this and he was somewhat dismissive about it again restating he had filled oil to full.

Have driven 220 kms since that point keeping close eye on oil level and the MMI shows that oil level is already down to 80% full. Will continue to monitor closely but have a bad feeling about this.

Car also idles rough at a standstill and doesn't seem to be running %100.

Where in NZ are you located? I'm located in CHCH.

I have a 2010 A4 with an Autosure Extreme Warranty - take it to Audi, they will need to do a service and use the correct oil (they won't budge on this step) - they will start the proper oil consumption test, you go and drive 1000km (or until the warning comes on) if it fails, the warranty company will honor the engine being fixed as a stage 2 fix.

Mine is going in next week to have a new engine fitted, my internals were scored and so new pistons won't make a difference.

Yeah I'm located in Hamilton. And car is under warranty.

Yes, car has been to Audi and the oil consumption test is underway. So far the car has done about 600 kms and the MMI shows that the oil level is at about 30%. At the current rate of consumption I expect the light to come on in the next couple of days. The dealer has assured us that it will be taken care of and has mentioned getting a new engine.

Thing is we got a pre purchase check done and shouldn't they have picked up on the fuel consumption, checked exhaust tips etc? Just want it to be sorted but if they aren't going to provide a new engine which seems to be the only fix for this issue, then after 3 weeks of ownership I'm tempted to ask for our money back in full.

Oil consumption is a really hard thing to pick up on the inspection. Especially if the car was thoroughly washed beforehand. Mine was so shiny that i doubt the inside of the exhaust would have been black. Pretty much comes down to caveat emptor.

Knowing what i know now, i would have bought a diesel 3.0 Q5 instead of the A4 - and not just due to oil consumption, but for loading height (my wife is now pregnant) - but you can't predict anything. Having the warranty will ease things massively, $350NZD excess for a $8-$10K fix, i wouldn't be worried, Audi will not do the PCV fix if the consumption is really high - and it sounds like yours is higher than mine. Put in in S mode and drive it like you stole it, that'll drop the oil reading even quicker.

I have started a conversation with Audi NZ to see what they are going to do about this, i would like if they took car eof the bill, but even knowing that any car from 2009-2012 in the effected class will be fixed, is enough for me.

Good luck
