With the little haldex monster now several months out of warranty, I just couldnt help myself - I needed a newer car. Underwhelmed by the facelift (and Audi dealers reluctance to take my car), unwilling to re-mod to get it to look and drive right, and with me being far too pale and ugly to carry off a TTS, I've gone back to the opposition.

Also, I find myself with a barely used MTM-Cantronic upgrade, anyone know what it's worth, or anyone want it? @batch can reassure you as to their brilliance I'm sure.

The replacement:

I considered all sorts of diesely things, but ended up with an M235i with lots of performance bits and carbon stuff. I had an M135i before and quite liked it, but this corrects most of the issues in that it's better looking, better equipped, and noisier thanks the M Performance exhaust.

Also, I live in the fens where I'd have to drive 43 miles to reach a hill so should be able to survive the winter in it.

I really, really didnt want another white car. It's 6 out of the last 7, but if you want loads of extras on a nearly new car you have to buy from Essex, and thats the only colour they allow down there, and they don't seem to mind speccing cars up then trading them in :)

Enjoy your new car @vacant , got to love those Essex boys! :rockwoot:

I too can vouch for the MTM Cantronic. If its used on the same engine ( Golf R/ Audi S3 / Cupra ) etc it is plug n play with no need for further recode. The Golf boys have been selling between themselves for some time now. Price wise circa £600 for the S3/Golf R MTM Cantronic boxes. (£1400 ish new) Not cheap but well worth the money in my eyes for the ease of install / removal and the sheer quality of the product. Power delivery is silky smooth/ no errors no hassle and no problems, install, enjoy and forget about it.

Its not a tuning box... hey @DJAlix

Enjoy the BMW, wonder how long before you throw a JB4 on it ?!:yahoo:

All the best

Also, Jassy since I'll miss your "humour" can you please send your boy off to BMW, get a deal on one then head over to BMW forum? It's the least you can do, you've never liked your Audi anyway! :tearsofjoy:

Tuning box would be the overall term for the kit but I myself would actually call the solution a "host". Thats all I am going to say :)

Given what I know of the MTM I would actually say that £600 is a touch high but then you don't see these units often.

I'm approaching the Beemer as somewhere between a cruiser and a musclecar, enjoying the hilariously good noise in bursts and being a bit more civilised the rest of the time, the S3 was just such a laser guided speed carrying device that more power made it more better-er-er, but the BMW will just get lairier.

Actually, thats not the worst idea...

Nice BMW, very smart.

As far as the Cantronic goes, worthless... I'd take it off your hands for £50 ;)

Have you seen the video from the ASN member @trhamza has done on his friends BMW?

Seems you've picked a pretty good alternative

Hope you have fun with it.

After picking it up I parked in the services, couldnt find park (it's a button on the gearlever) forgot it had an old fashioned handbrake and rolled into tje kerb - no damage done thankfully!

Lovely looking 2 @vacant - sorry to see you go though!

As for the MTM, yes I can vouch it's an incredible bit of kit offering almost as much as a map (due to it using the entire CanBUS harness to feed off) and essentially a piggyback ECU!

Going rate is more like £800-850 I think. Fantastic piece of kit!

I know of a few people, asking less, that have been trying to sell their units for a while now.

Edit: Maybe one of them is watching this thread as a box that was on eBay for a little while has just this minute been re-listed.

Yeah the M235i really is awesome!

Always liked them and after checking out my friends one (which didn't have an MPE) It solidified the thought. Such an awesome sounding thing, good choice @vacant

Beautiful car mate and with a proper engine, something thats getting rarer theses days!
Before I got the 8V, I considered the M235i. I would have jumped at that as it looks the dogs with the M performance kit on.
Regards the mtm cantronic box, it's something I would be interested in, but don't they have to go back to mtm to be recoded?

It seems only for Warranty purposes, it will work fine on the same platform vehicle without recoding. Apparently!

MTM confirmed to a few people that it needs recoding or it seems to work but it is really locked in a limited mode that just over passes the system and not increases power. Quoted £400 to recode after someone on the Golf R forum tested it and acceleration times were exactly the same without the MTM and with a used, non recoded, one. Just thought I mention it as there was a big issue with the sale in the other forum and do not wish people to go through it again here. Just my 2p...

Just wanted to know, why were the Audi dealers reluctant to take your S3? Also what is it about the facelift S3 that you're underwhelmed about?

Most main dealers run away if it's the slightest bit modified. They also have a sales "process" that involves offering you Cap average for your car, full up for theirs plus Gap, supaguard divorce insurance and a toaster. I couldn't be ***** with going through all that too many times.

The facelift doesn't look any better (in my opinion) most of the cool stuff is extra (and horrendously priced) and it still drives essentially the same so I'd be back to spending money making it less bouncy :)

Ultimately I really loved my S3, but didn't want to keep it until it got old and started breaking, and couldn't bring myself to spend a metric f-tonne to end up with an almost identical car.

I wouldn't try to put anyone off buying one though, they are brilliant :s3addict:
.

I'm still looking to get one and at first didn't like the facelift looks. After seeing it a few times in person, I do prefer it in certain colours to the pre-facelift and like the better exhaust noise, 7 speed gearbox and virtual cockpit (which I agree is priced badly). I agree with you, if you have a pre-facelift it isn't worth it to upgrade for those changes alone with how much it'll cost.

Same train of thought as myself mate l have a really well specced car think it's got about £6k of options on it,it's still nice looking love the colour etc...but l really couldn't part with a lot of money for a S3 with a boot instead of a hatchback, and l get you with the sales **** aswell, my son is off to BMW next month, so l will probably buy a car off Carwow now couldn't sit there at a desk with someone else trying to sell me a Audi lol **** knows what l will do....
