2015 black edition 2.0TDI auto - mpg issues

Hi

I bought a 2015 a6 this month with 20k on the clock.

I was led to believe that the MPG should hit 60mpg if driven correctly.

I have done two long motorway journeys. Fluctuating between 60mph and 80mph. The best MPG I got was about 52mpg.

Driving around town at a steady 30mph pace in efficiency mode the best I have got is 45mpg.

I have turned off all the internal heating and cooling. I have nothing unnecessary being on that I know of. All the tyres are inflated adequately.

Has anyone got any advice as to why it might be low. or if this is actually the norm?
 
Factory figures vs reality - different universe

You may see it get better as the weather gets warmer; diesels are very inefficient when cold. Also whilst your tyres are correctly inflated, are they pointing in the right direction? Correct wheel alignment can have an effect too :)
 
44.3mpg for me with mixed driving. Still happy compared to my old 2005 BMW 530d Auto Touring which gave me 30mpg doing the same trips week in week out.

60mpg is lala-land for a 2000kg barge. My Wife's A2 only manages that if stuck a 60mph and its all aluminium. 52mpg is a decent return for the size of car that a 2.0ltr engine has to lug around

Yep sounds about right..

My facelift A5 sportback 177bhp tdi fitted with the newest DTUK CRDT2 tuning box is just about averaging 39/40mpg, and so far i've tryed 5 different setting and getting nowhere near quoted Mpg on the DIS ( IT LIES ) i get my Mpg average off my fuelly app, its way more accurate

The Box makes the trip computer useless
 
Well that's a big disappointment. I'm putting in I'd say at least 1/3 more diesel than I was with my 2008 520d BMW msport which I sold for this.
I had a look online and got these as the so called mpg figures

Source - Autotrader

The Audi salesmans realed them off to me too which has done my head in. Going to turn the mpg screen off now haha.
 
I have had 60mpg from mine over a 2hr journey - rare though. It seems to me that the beginging of the journey has a disproportionate effect on the final figure i.e. if you start and drive at 50mph for 10 mins and then hit the a roads you'll easily see high 50's.

I get about 740miles per tank.

2.0l Ultra Black Ed Manual 5k on clock.
 
That's about right I can get 40-45 around town, and 50-60 on the motorway, my average since new is 48

It is better now it's warming up and is getting better as the engine beds in, I'm on 8k now

I've done a long 2 hour run without stopping on the motorway and achieved 56!

For the size of the car it's still very good

yeah sounds about right !

just posted elsewhere in the forum as i flagged this as an issue for my car very early on in onwership. Our car now has defiantly 'bedded in' and I'm getting mpg with 30k on the clock than i had with 20k on the clock.

Check you haven't got the heat mirrors on all the time as well ... good luck

My 2013 3.0tdi has never got anywhere near 50-60 on a motorway. More like 45-48 on the mway and 35-40 around town. Still a damn sight better than the S4

20k is very little mileage also don't use supermarket fuel if you want good mpg my A6 3.0 Quattro does 52 on a long touring trip (brim to brim tank fill) at a steady 80

I just cannot see where all these 3.0tdi owners are getting such good mileage, 50-60mpg. At 80 mph mine would struggle to keep 40mpg

Well we do have a good power to weight ratio for starters and touring in econ mode it is achievable (20k is not enough miles for a diesel to bed in 50k + and you'll notice the difference)

Well my 3.0 gets no where near these figures. My commute to work is mainly clear B-roads with a little traffic at a few junctions and the best I've seen is 40mpg. This is with no a/c, heated seats, in eco mode, electric mirrors and a coast downhill.
 
I've got 10,500 on the clock of my 3.0 TDI (272 BHP) A6 Avant and recently got 54 mpg on a trip to and from Lancaster. This was driving at a steady 70 mph plus 50 mph on the average speed sections on the A6. I also had the air con turned off and made sure heated mirrors etc. also all turned off. Very impressed with the mpg so far on such a big car plus you've got the power and torque of the V6 there when you need it
 
Although not matching stated figures I don't think these cars are too bad compared with similar sized cars of yester year and they are alot more powerful.

My 3.0 biTurbo has done over 70k miles so well bedded in now and it's averaging 35mpg since i got it. A work colleague who lives near me has a A5 2.7 with 190bhp (weighs much less, has about 160bhp and a turbo less than mine) and on the same 25 mile round trip gets pretty much the same mpg and is also avg 35mpg. I also don't sit at 60mph on the motorway i can tell you that :D

I came from a little 1.6 diesel Alfa that avg about 45mpg over the same trip and could see 68mpg on long trips but it didn't take long to get over the shock when you have an extra 250bhp at your disposal. Best I've seen from a tank is 550 miles but i always top up atleast 1-2 extra bar away from the red.
 
I should also add that I never turn off AC, heated seats are used from time to time and the heated mirrors are always switched on.

I could be wrong but i think the auto heated mirrors only heat and supply current when you first start up anyway as the always clear quickly but on a cold journey one day i left the engine running why i waited for 30 mins in a car park and they started to freeze/mist up. Then when i started driving again they didn't clear.
So I pulled over turned the engine off and back on and they cleared up moments latter. So I have a feeling they aren't always on and needing current if you leave them switched to on.
 
mines getting better with age, on 13k now and my total average is 51.2
 
I am getting 50-53 on my weekly commute to London (about 250 miles mainly M4 but loads of 50mph areas), first run got 53mpg in comfort and second run got 50mpg in Dynamic I will try economy mode this Sunday see what that gets me! Still way better than my old BMW 530D touring!

MPG sounds good to me. Some of the figures above refer to the 3.0 engine, so can you confirm which engine type you have?
 
mine averages around 44mpg

in eco mode and sitting at 55mph on long journeys it sits at 60mpg

around town in dynamic/sport it sits at 25mpg
