B9 A4/S4 - Little Surprises

Every other time there abouts, the steering wheel lock won't apply and I have to pick unlock, apply and lock the car again. Odd.

I'm probably being rather thick here, but, what does `pick unlock, apply` mean exactly?

It won't let me edit it haha. Typo, but for what, I don't know. Basically, turn ignition off/it won't lock the steering wheel/close door, lock door/unlock door, open door/then I can apply the lock.

I'm rather surprised you do that. I always thought that turning the wheels (to apply the lock) whilst stationary wasn't a good idea. Also, I thought that the idea was that (assuming the system is working correctly) you just turned the engine off, exited and locked the car. Then if some scrote was to try to nick it and drive it away as soon as he turned the wheel the lock would engage.

Not what I've experienced. When it's worked (applied), and I e got in the car and press the start button, you'll both feel and hear the steering lock 'unlock'.

When I'm checking to see if it 'has' worked by opening the door again, the steering wheel is unlocked. You get what I'm saying? When I've made sure it is locked, I'll come back to the car the next day, open the door and the steering wheel is locked. But I'm physically having to lock, unlock, apply steering wheel lock, lock car door for it to work. That's not how it should be.

Maybe (though I don't see why) it has something to do with you driving an `S`. Perhaps someone else with an `S` could join in this conversation.

The reason I know there's something wrong is because sometimes the steering wheel will lock when I switch off ignition and sometimes it won't (hence the laborious lock/unlock/lock routine).

In my B8.5, it locked every single time I chose to.

Have you owned a car that has a start button and a electronic steering wheel lock before. I am just wondering because a physical one with a key will behave differently...

The B8.5 had the key fob. It unlocked the steering wheel in the exact same way the B9 does (when it wants to) by pressing the start button.

It's in the manual, but easy to miss...If the car does not engage "Coasting Mode" because it thinks the gradient is over 10% or some other random reason, you can trigger it by pressing the upshift flappy paddle.

I did not know this one! Nice one. I have a "hill" on the way to work. 50% of the time the car takes it self out of gear and the other it doesn't.
Works like a treat.

Sorted. So...

Basically, when you turn off ignition, from what I gather doing this, you then open the door and, within about 1-2 seconds, there's a mechanical click and then you can apply steering wheel lock.

I must have on some occasions either a) not opened the door and tried to apply steering wheel lock or b) opened the door and tried to apply the lock too quickly (before that click). Either way, there's a knack to it and I'm chalking it up to the car having a personality.

Questioned asked, question answered. Wondered about this

Two nice surprises today.......
1. I got rather low on fuel and the car asked me in the MMI if I wanted to navigate to the nearest petrol station.
2. Just before I got home the car flagged up that my phone was nearly empty.

It'll do the phone thing earlier than I would expect and rather it was 20%. Thundercliff, why do you feel the need to apply your steering lock, I've not done that since I first had keyless start in 2008...

If the car is coasting in gear, the economy gauge yes up to 60mpg. If it coasts out of gear, the economy drops to about 55mpg. WTF. I know that the S4 is thirsty but it can't use that much fuel just idling :)

Coasting in gear shouldn't use any fuel at all, coasting out of gear at 40mph will gain less mpg than say 100mph. Catch me drift

Noticed today after I adjusted the side bolsters. When you get out they open up. Then when I get back in the nip back up again found this real good in passenger seat as my pregnant mrs struggles to get in and out

Has anyone with a Saloon A4 tried the kick to open boot feature? Is it actually there?

The manual says if you have the convenience key then it should be there however back when I picked the car up I asked the salesman if it had it and after swinging his foot around he couldn't get it to open.

Thanks

It's probably the most rubbish feature I've found. I've got it to work probably one in 10 attempts before I get bored and use the key fob. Maybe it just needs a bit more practice to find how and where to "kick". Bit of a pita!

Why would you 'not' use a security feature?

Why, because as soon as the wheel is moved it locks, its not like steering locks of old where just one position locks it, modern electronic systems lock in several places. There us simply no need to apply the lock by turning the wheel anymore..

A few things I'm liking about my car.
Disengage gearbox by pressing +paddle then re engage by pressing -
Switching from sport to drive constantly to suit roads.
Tried launch control today but just spun the front end up! (3ltr 218)
The b&o is just amazing compared to b8 b&o!
I like that warm feeling on my elbow when it's sat on the centre armrest, just noticed that today!

My car is going back to audi for the interior footwell light issue. Hopefully that will be sorted.

Overall, quite happy so far.

When you say "Disengage gearbox" what do you mean exactly?
Yeah, the variable height armrest is so good. I really missed it when I moved from a Skoda Superb to a Mazda a few years ago.

I found that swiping your foot right to left, rather than kicking your foot back and forth works every time for me.

I got that from the VW advert that's on in the cinema where people are hiding in their boot from an alien, and every time they alien's tail swishes under the back bumper, the tailgate opens :tearsofjoy:

Tyres were getting a bit grey so I gave them a coat of Endurance.
Hadn't noticed before but they are a tad proud of the alloys so nice and easy to do.
Added bonus...makes the chances of curbed alloys less likely during `park assist` operations.

Where do you stand with audi on returning the car if the auto park hits a kerb/wall or summit?

Not a chance you'd be able to return the car.
You need to understand that it is not `auto park` as you put it. It is PARK ASSIST`. The system `assists` you in parking the car. If you are careless enough to hit a kerb or a wall then its down to you...not the car and not Audi.

I had park assist on my 2011 focus and used it a few times, it seemed to do a good job of avoiding the curbs. But I became bored with it but maybe its better on a larger car..

If we're talking about `parallel parking` (as opposed to `bay parking`) then it depends how close the car in front of you is to the curb because that is what the system focuses on. The closer it is the bigger the possibility you'll hit the curb. If it is actually perched ON the curb then that's the time you need to be especially watchful.

The A4 has 6 sensors at the front and at the back and the side ones should slightly angle down to detect the kerb. It must have kerb detection because it needs to know the distance from the kerb when reversing into a parking spot, it can't possibly take a reference point from the car in front when you're along side it.

I'm not sure but a friends Passat CC will mount the curb if the car in front is on it. It also has the 6 sensors...

You might be right, but I don't think so!
My understanding is that your car `lines up` with the car in front. Hence the need to be vigilant if its really close to the curb.

I guess the Audi system isn't as good as the one I had on my focus then as it always maintained a good gap between the wheels and the curb.
