Hello,

Brought an Audi A7 4 days ago (2012) and I now have a problem. The MMI display is permanently retracted and just stays there! I have turned the car off and back on again multiple times but the screen will not pop up. I have left the car overnight and tried again but no luck. The radio/cd players/satnav will not work either and on the drivers display "Entertainment is being initialised" is permanently displayed. I have also pressed the button to bring the display out and done a 3 button reset of the MMI multiple times and the fault remains.

Has anyone got any ideas?

Cheers

Get that car scanned with VCDS that should pin point the fault with your MMI system.

Thanks alot for the advice, its still under warranty so I might take it to an Audi garage. Would they have an issue with me upgrading the software myself/?

Cheers

Yes, if you try to update the MMI software yourself it will leave an error code which you cannot clear (even with VCDS) and they may invalidate the warrant on the MMI system. They may perform the update as part of the fault diagnostics or just ask them to update the MMI system to the latest version.

Thanks for the reply, I suppose I'll have to wait and see what they say. I have got a genuine VCDS cable turning up on Tuesday, is there a possibility that it would be fixable with that once I've scanned the car?

Update - Audi can't fit the vehicle in for another 2 weeks.

Also I was having an issue with the battery draining if left for over 12 hours - so over the last 2 weeks I have had to jump start the car and/or charge the battery 4 times.

Decided to do some fault finding today, plugged my VCDS cable in and look at the battery charge % and current draw in various situations. When the car was off and door locked it was drawing 5A which seemed a bit much. So I then pulled the Infotainment (Centre Console) fuse which is 5A and the Amp draw went down to negligible - so it seems like thats the issue.

Anyone got any ideas from here? I'm going to leave the fuse pulled until the dealership have a look at it to stop me having to jumpstart it several times a week!

If you put the fuse back in and do a full scan of the car and post it up here we may be able to say what the fault is.

My VCDS scan can be found below (only kept the errors):

The "cannot be reached" or "No communication" messages is typical of a problem with the fibre optic loop that connects the MMI system together.

Either a plug has come loose, the fibre cable has become crimped, or a fuse for one of the modules has gone. Every module has to be connected to the fibre cable, and all must have power. Any one not working can interrupt the fibre communications bus.

Most of the electronics are in the boot, on the left hand side behind the side panel, you can look there to see if there are any loose fibre connections. The check the fuse panel for any blown fuses.

There is a way of testing the fibre cable, using a short fibre loop, you can remove a module and loop the fibre cable back on itself. Can get quite complicated, so waiting for the dealer may be your least frustrating option.....

Thanks for all of your replies.

Car has been into the dealer and they have fixed the problem under warranty. It was a control unit that had gone, they replaced it and updated the firmware to 0770.

Cheers

Hello, which control unit was replaced? I am facing the identical problem after an attempted update of the MMI by myself. Unfortunately, I do not have Warranty anymore, so I am on my own.

A failed update should but the unit in emergency boot loader mode which you should see on the screen. If our not getting anything you could try and pull the fuse for the 5F module then give it a few minutes to complete power off, and if you still don't get anything then you need to start looking on ebay for a replacement module.

Well, my MMI still turns on, but it does not seem to be able to communicate with any of the other modules like NAV, Audio AMP etc. Also, there is no logo that appears at boot up time, the screen just remains open even when unit is rebooting etc. The components that failed to update were MulOC and MulNIC, both of which seem to stand for Multimedia Optical Card/Cable and Multimedia Network Interface Card. I may be wrong, but it looks like the MOST Bus Controller may have fried during the update or maybe it just needs the fuse replaced. I will try out your suggestion today and report back.

Have you sort out your problem ?
I need to do map update and firmware as well just wondering if the dealer is the safest options ...?

Sorry about the thread resurrection, but this is becoming an increasing issue since a lot of the C7 gen cars are 3-5 years old now.

I had the same when I tried an "OEM update pack" off eBay, that turned out to be a lithuanian company called NaviFix: after I started to apply the update, it said it would reboot a few times, 3 minutes later, it closed the screen and the DIS just said "initialising..." for all the MMI functions. 45mins, later still nothing.

What's worse is that the unit is capable of being permanently live and it was stuck in a boot loop and draining the battery, so by the next day, I was opening via the keys, not the remote!

Final solution was to take the mmi out, open it up to the motherboard and solder on a RS232 cable and push the firmware on via that.

I was pretty fed up by that stage and didn't trust my soldering skills, so ended up pulling the whole unit and sending it to HazzyDayz in Herts /Beds somewhere and they put recovered it, put the 2016 maps and 990 firmware on it... And sent me an OEM SD to update the rest of the firmware elsewhere in the car (just the bits that link to the mmi: something to do with the audio and radio).

£450, so not the budget option, but the unit is amazing now :straight onto my phone via rSAP and online (3G) every time now.

Doing the firmware is highly recommended, but not via ropey NaviFix software!

I just done the same with a 3gp unit update went all fine but now stuck in engineering menu
Yes tried everything won't read another update

But fortunately I feel I have the skills
I now read your rx / tx method but I repaired by removing the actual flash chip and off board programming it lol

The very long way round by the sounds of it tho

All working fine now

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but im having issues with my MMI, and this seems the closest issue to my problem.
Randomly, two days ago, the MMI wouldnt come out of the dash... car scanned and 'optical data bus OPEN CIRCUIT (static Fault)' had appeared, drove home, and next morning upon starting the car all was OK again, all working.. no issues whatsoever.
Today, back to no MMI coming out of the dash again. great.
Scanned with VAGCOM this time and it points to a comms fault within the optical loop. My plan is to check the plugs to make sure none have worked loose, but cant seem to find the location of where any of the plugs on the loop actually are... anyone have a diagram or a proper description of where to look at all for all of these?

Cheers!

Start with the electronics bay in the boot, should be on the left hand side behind the cover.

Audi tend to have an orange fibre cable, inside some black tubing. Make sure those are all securely plugged in, then move to the front of the car. You will need to pull out the MMI control unit from the dash.

Removing the MMI unit is fairly easy - you pull the AC control panel - I think it pulls right out - its been a while since I did this, then there is a single screw holding the MMI in place. Undo, and the MMI should pull/slide out. There are more fibre cables there. Just ensure they are fully plugged in.

Any sharp bends/kinks can break the cable, so make sure its not pinched anywhere.

Brilliant cheers for the reply, i found some dust in the plug on the BOSE unit in the boot, cleaned it up and been perfect since, so fingers crossed! Thanks again!
