If you were to buy another A4, what engine would you go for?

The death of the V8.

So nose heavy , love the noise , but the 4 cylinder 20+ psi forced induction rules...

No more nose heavy than the inline 5. It's aluminium, and boosted, will blow any 1.8T clean off the tarmac.

Torn between the 2 gents.

Nothing beats the roar of that thunderous V8 on the S4 b6/7. Easily one of my all time favourite engine notes.

Im a turbo convert. Always thought I would be a purist and stay NA but no chance now..no chance.

Yes, boosted 4 bangers are the one!

Dr Strange, boosted motors are great, whatever the engine configuration.

The 1.8T inline 4 is kind of okay...but, a twin-boosted 4.2 V8 is something else. I owned a 2004 RS6 Avant, and I haven't forgotten the sudden rush of power, when I mashed the gas pedal to the floorboards, despite the power being fed through a 5-speed ZF Tiptronic.

This is why I'm going with a boosted 4.2 V8 40V in my B6.

Sorry to digress further, ladies and gents.

I cant fault you there Nollywood. There is probably nothing better in the world than the sound of a roaring V8 but with turbo induction noise at the same time! Matt Farah on the smoking tyre (Youtube channel) confirmed this haha.

Ive never had the luxy of being in an Rs6 so can imagine its EPIC to say the least.

If a Twin-Turbo is your plan on the B6 S4, I literally cannot wait. I only recall one or 2 others have doen this. (Other forums somewhere in cyber space)

Thanks for your input, Dr Strange. I really appreciate it.

My base car is not a B6 S4, though. And I'm not boosting the B6 S4's 079-series chain-driven engine, which I see as one of the worst modern-day engine Audi ever built.

I'm starting with a D3 A8 4.2 V8 40V - 077-series, belt-driven. Very robust, and tough as hell. Almost unburstable.

You're welcome.

A very smart Idea me thinks. Oh yes, the Poor S4 b6 engine. Such a shame it has this MAJOR fault as its a glorious engine.

..and there's me thinking that the A8 4.2 was/is the same engine as the S4 B6.

Completely veering off topic, is the 4.2 from the D£ A8 a slighty older version of the s4 B6 ? As the engine code is xx77 rather than xx79 and if so, they should have stuck with this engine for the s4 b6 also.

When are you starting this project? (im predicting at 600 horses+ haha)

No worries, Dr Strange.

Yeah...the B6 S4 motor...bad design. I owned a B6 S4, and know what I went through, as did the previous owner (who had it from brand new). Best forgotten.

The D3 A8 4.2 V8 from 2005 - 2009 runs an 079-series, chain-driven engine. It's an FSI motor, so has a lot in common with the B7 RS4 32V, just without the RS4's high-revving capabilities. 2003 - 2005 models run an 077-series V8 motor, which is actually based upon the C5 RS6 block. Same issues when it comes to mating this engine to an 01E 6-speed manual.

I've used this engine in my 2000 B5 A4 2.8 Quattro, and this acted as a test bed, in terms of mating the engine to a manual gearbox. Audi didn't use this engine in the B6, as they were looking at space in front. But...it does fit. I'll make it fit, if it's the last thing I do!

I'm starting the engine swap come summer, when it's warmer. As for output, I'm looking at the 650hp mark. It's based upon a built engine, not a 4.2 with stacked gaskets.

Again ladies and gents, my apologies for digressing.

Thanks for the info Nollywood,

All very interesting. I wasnt aware you've done all this work previously. You mustve had quite a special B5! :respekt:

Really excited for you. In my opinion, youve picked a great chassis for the tranplant, will be eagerly awaiting this develoment!

Yeah sorry to the OP for digressing..

For the money I have, Im staying with 1.8T but then with my option to stage 3 it. Meaning, If budget permits, I will drop a BBT hybrid into my engine to get near 300bhp and 300lbft torque with supporting hardware.

Thanks, Dr Strange.

My old B5 4.2 V8 40V Quattro Sport, 01E 6-speed manual. What a sleeper she was, with the original 7"x16" Sport alloys, and the stock 2.8 Quattro badge on her rump. Not a spoiler or wing in sight!

Again, sorry ladies and gents! I'm just pointing out what's possible with the B6 platform. I've proven the hell out of thee B5, not the B6 needs to be shown some love, the 3.0 crowd would especially love this.

Nollywood,

I've never seen such a thing! Amazing work. I bet that thing just growls and growls when you rev'd it !

Buy the 4,2 audi , rip out the v8 and fit a chevy LS9 with corresponding box of choice get a prop made (£250) and then you have a proper car with 600+ bhp and no problems.Better fuel economy than the audi with an engine thats a million years infront of audi.

A proper car? An Audi A4 B5, with a modern Euro III compliant 4.2 V8 40V is not a proper car, no?

My best friend imports LS motors from the United States, and ships worldwide. He's an LS tech, and in terms of gas mileage, the LS is not for the miserly user. It's a gas hog, compared to any Audi V8.

I would say it's a million years behind any Audi V8 - yeah, including the original Audi 4.2 V8 32V (ABH). A pushrod engine is not modern. 600hp in an LS comes at a cost - big $$$.

Ls9 is 628 bhp straight out the box ,factory standard! A mild tune (remap) gives 800+ at a cost of less than £300 , spend £1k on it and your into 1000+ bhp with matching torque figures, which by the way is above the 987 bhp veyron motor which had to be a w16 because vw blew up the v8,s trying to match the ls9!!!
How do i know..............................ive been building v8,s since i was 14 at santa pod and im now 51, ive travelled all over the world doing so, i remember the audi v8 being brought out in the late 80,s early 90,s as a 3.6. Its not a bad engine but it does not compare to the yanks stuff which has been around since the late 50,s.
As for mpg, well with the right box and audi s4 rear axle it will easily return late 20,s mpg if driven reasonably, if pushed it will drop to 15 to 18 mpg.
When i can find a cheap enough s4 cab i will remove the motor and fit an ls9 i have here and the decide which auto box to go for with a manual shift pack.

It would just be awesome in an a4, just my preference thats all im not decrying the s4 in any way , but i would fit the chevy ,its what i do for fun .

Ah dont get me started on the above. Ever since I learned about the LS engine the more I want one.
Seems to be one of the best pound for pound engines right now. I watched this youtube vid below on 'why LS engines are so good' and now lust over one haha.

My dream would be one of these LS swaps but for practicality there is no way us Brits would have good day to day driving experiences with a motor like this. I mean I'd love to but our tiny Island has sh*t old roman roads thus not being able to enjoy that V8 monster.

Which is why...Im probably going (forever changing my mind) for an Audi 3.0TDI ofor my next car, many years to come.

Well i built and drove this 640 hp 600lbft everyday

And this

That insane! Where do I find your work?

Love that 4-to-1 manifold. What a beast!

Currently own a diesel mk5 golf, I previously had a b6 1.9tdi and loved it. I changed jobs late last year and went from doing 1000 miles each week to only 50 miles now. My next car WILL be a b6 S4. For the money they go for, the awesome power and sound it's a no brainer really!

I would advise you go for a B7, or be prepared for heart-stopping maintenance / repair bills. And be prepared to do your own wrenching. B6 S4's are dirt cheap for a reason.

Timing chain / guide issues.
Scored bores.
Dropped valves.
Compressor drive shaft failure.

I had a stint with a 54 plate B6 S4 Convertible. Low miles, 2 owners, yet...

Makes paying more road tax worth it then! Sound advice mate thanks. I do prefer the b7 front end.
