JB4 info and discussion thread

This is on a wet road at +3psi in first gear. Definitely getting better

Excellent thread for reference @OliS3! Reading through that vwVortex JB4 GolfR/S3 thread can daunting to read at times.

Yet to try a launch in mine since upgrading
To the jb4... only had it out for a quick sprint down the road and my traction light is flashing like mad in first gear .. but that was on a damp road ! Waiting for some dry weather to see what happens

I've been doing some research and I think it is the torque limiter kicking in on the gear box which is causing the slight delay in 1st gear. This can be resolved by launching at a lower RPM or using VCDS to detective the limiter in the ABS modules (from what I'm told)

Just posting for anyone else who has the same issue, after playing with first gear boost settings I've decided it is best to have higher boost in first gear and just use 3k for launch control. I did 3 x 3k rpm launches in a row and each one was perfect and it really did move

My reply to the logs..

Ok, lets build the bottom up bit now. Make the boost safety value 27psi

Make
3000 19
3500 21
4000 23
4500 24
5000 22
5500 21

Leave the rest unchanged and let me know how it goes.

Car feels better than ever, mid range is insane compared to even the jb1

Insane pull and nice logs OliS3! What FOL value are you using? My psi peak is on 5500 and 6000, trying to save transmission.. currently running 6.5 psi additive. Love the performance of JB4!

Thanks and glad you like it as much as me, just the standard settings other than what George told me to change in that email I posted

Is there's a big difference over map 2 oli?

Wondering if I should start taking logs now :grin:

map 2 to map 6 wasn't much different at first, map 6 had slightly less mid torque, now with the new settings George gave me map 6 is better than map 2, by how much I don't know.

I haven't logged the new settings yet but hopefully they're nice and safe and they feel excellent, might even have more to gain :) bonus of the JB4

Having used it for a month now, just gotta say WOW!

Most definitely worth the upgrade from JB1.

I was thinking get map 6 right and then I can use the runs for map 2 vs map 6

Does engine need to adjust itself btw maps or can you change them on fly?

Seem like stock with just a jb4

Sent from my HTC 10
So with map 6 and extra torque you can also get on 99ron we could see 380hp with 375 ftlb. That would be impressive

Would be nice to know what settings were used in jb4. I've seen another dyno sheet of almost stock S3 and it did have 360hp with JB4

I think it was 367 and had a few mods if it's the same one. Map 6 seems to get about 20ftlb over map 2 and with how much better my car feels I can believe it

Wow im liking them figures, think i need to get JB4 for my S3 wheres the best place to get one from please.

I used jb4shop.co.uk and it came a few days later even though the page said it was out of stock when I ordered. You won't be disappointed, it's a massive difference over stock

Hi Oli

Finally installed my jb4 and did few logs on map 2 and 6. I got vwr600 intake. Fuel v power racing Ron 100

I had problems to do proper datalog from 2000 rpms because my stronic downshift gear to second when I was on 3th.
Any tips how to do this correct?

Guess the trick is to almost floor the throttle but not to the end ind the beginning to avoid kickdown. At least this worked for me. It could also be easier with non-sport mode.

Use dynamic and when in sports auto switch to manual with at least sports traction control or fully off. switch to manual, in 3rd at 3k put the power down but don't hit the kick down switch, once your past 50mph you can hold it to the floor even though it doesn't make a difference. Ideally finish 4th gear as well as it has no boost restrictions, good air flow and extra load over 3rd.

Hope even though that sounds long winded it helps

Btw Oli could you write again your mods?
I know that you mentioned somewhere but I have no idea where.
Second question is about ambient temp when you did tests with map 6?
Here where I'm is -5c

In short nothing lol I've cut the front of the air box and the exhaust flaps are open that's it. Temp was 6c

Euro spec cars seem to match us spec car with downpipes but then again a lot run on 91 so they make good power considering that's 95ron.

95ron to 99ron seems to give tuners another 5-10% extra power so it's quite a difference on our cars

What fuel do you have in Belgium? 100ron?

Oli what fuel open loop you got with above setings?

Whatever standard is, 60 I think

Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk

I'm confused because when I first time opened jb4 I have seen fuel close loop set to 60!
George wrote this:
You JB4 should ship with a fuel open loop value of 40. The maximum you can go is 60. Increasing the value will lower trim levels by increasing rail pressure. Dropping the value will increase trims values.

I'll double check for you tomorrow but I'm sure it was 60 and my air fuel ratios are bang on

Gents, I need some help please about JB1/4.
I almost bought a JB1 and have now nearly bought a JB4! As a manual owner I am not chasing ultimate power/torque gains just wanting a little more top end umph, if I do not buy any optional JB4 kit (AFR/OBDII) and am not interested in logging etc is it just the same install as a JB1 i.e. does a standard JB4 fit the same as a JB1 with just 3 sensor connections? Does a JB4 just work better than a JB1, is it worth getting the JB4 over a JB1 even if I don't want to adjust stuff?
Thanks

In short it is worth getting the jb4, the power delivery is loads smoother than the jb1

OK thanks and still just 3 connectors if I just buy the 'basic' JB4?

The is no basic jb4, the jb4 has the obd and air fuel wire. The only way you'll have 3 connectors is with the jb1.

Both are good but I would still personally take the jb4 in your situation
