Honeycomb fog grille mesh (RS6 look)

Hey Mark,
Have a look in my gallery. There is one picture of the car with original trim all round, when I bought it (have problems with rest of the pictures at the moment)

Colour is grey but looks puple to me.

Main grille is plasti dipped matt.
Planning to ged rid of rest of the chrome with plasti dip.
Roof rails will probably do in silver to match mirror caps, lower chin in front bumper and rear diffusor I plasti dipped few months ago.

It's a slow process of matching all bits together like "black edition" cars have.

Looks good. Mine's a dark Blue so think I'll possibly go for a black grill too - I think it looks good.

Have you considered wrapping instead? Less time consuming

Wrapping is more time consuming for me.
It's not going to be as solid, but will be fine in the sun and cold.
Wrap in the sun should be ok but colder temperatures might shrink it.

Plasti dipped few items in my life so got quite good results. Preperations are always the key.

I even bought a electrical tape wide enough to wrap the window chrome trims all in one piece (seen someone doing that in US and looked good).
Cannot do the bend on the chrome at the rear side windows.
Tape is thick and does not stretch as much as needed.

Just recently wrapped B pillars to see if it will look fine, ok-ish, tacky or good. It is Carbon film as I want to change the exhaust tips to larger, carbon looking and wanted to have something matching.

Still thinking about it, tho.
May post some pictures and ask for opinion.

Kris, was the new grille gloss back before you Plastidipped it?
Also, how does the fit compare with the original?
Are there any big gaps, or does it sit proud anywhere?

I'm considering the same one that you bought as it seems to be about the cheapest on eBay for the facelift models and appears to be supplied from up here in the North East.

Simon, it is Gloss black originally. I personally don't like gloss so matt'ed it out.

Fitting is a bit different than oem grille. Oem ones have plastic tabs along the both sides of it but at the top and bottom is secured with screws, 4 at the top and 2 in the bottom.
Tabs are hard to pry without braking them but be careful and take your time undoing them.
Rs look grille is just simply screwed on to the bumper, no tabs.
I've added on few more screws to secure it properly and it sits nicely and flush.
No gaps noticed that would state the swap.

Have a look trough the thread again and check the pictures.

I'm still proud of my self with this mod. Lol

Hey bud,

For the first time I have used "No nails" glue as it was easy to file to shape but it gave way few months after.
Than used proper hard plastic glue from Halfrauds, don't remember the name of it and it worked better. Also, with second reglue, I have permanently sprayed it matt.

Just 2 days ago, took the matte plasti dil off the front grille to original gloss and will be giving the fog grilles a coat of clear lacquer for shine.

Something must've happen to my head to switch back to gloss and chrome

Rings remain matte silver dipped. Soon to go on

Lovely job with the car... pls tell me where you got your grille mesh from?
I've shown one here that it looks like but the honeycomb pieces measure 2.5cm/1.4cm which I thought was a bit on he large size.
Yours look perfect size, I could be wrong and yours could be the same or similar size honeycomb dimensions to this sheet sold by "goingfast" on eBay/Amazon.

Also what type of glue did you use and sand down? Could it be done with the molten liquid type or has to be something else?

Hi mate,

Don't remember who was the mesh from but they the same, in general.
It looks the same and ad pictures are same.

I started with "no nail" glue but discovered, it gave up after few months due to weather, I think.
Bought the proper plastic glue from Halfords, as it was available from the shelf. This did better and stronger connection.
Read her, some users were gluing it with mastik or another industrial type glue and was also good.

First glue attemot, I was filing with sandpaper.
New glue was better as I was only filling the gaps between all notches carved out in the grille. Could not be bothered with little gaps at the front as it was going to be covered with lacquer.

If you want to go easier way, you do not need to carve them out, like I did. It will save you time.
I did it only to bring the mesh forward to the front. Make it more visible.
Came out pretty good.
Few weeks ago, I sprayed it with clear cote, for shine and to match main grille.

Let me know how it works for you and end result.

Ahh ok. Yeah the pictures in the ad look the same.. if at all possible and maybe you keep a handy rule/tape measure in the car haha, any chance you can measure the inside dimensions of the fog light grill mesh?
As I said...the one in the ad measures 2.5 x 1.4 cm which I thought seems a bit big but could be wrong.
I'm thinking to have a go with a hot glue gun as it sets right away...but wasn't sure if it could be nicely sanded.. I'll report back!

I'm thinking to also have a go hacking it up with a dremel....might end up looking naff, we'll see.

Just finishing doing the control arms/poly v belt n idler pulleys plus the big crankshaft pulley!

Thanks for the tip! I used some stronger glue specifically for plastic and so far its working! Yeah i also went for the gloss black, something about the shine that draws me.

Anyhow i did it a little bit different and added some photos on how they turned out. Just wanted to say thanks for the inspiration in this thread!

Ahh you just replaced the whole grill piece with honeycomb mesh..I was thinking about that but problem was what to do with the little pointy bit in the middle that sticks out further than the grill....
Have you got any pic of the car front so we can better see how that set up looks.

#Chilostatic did not replaced it whole with mesh. If you look closer, you'll see mesh over the grille.
Nicely done to the size sonit looks oem.

I'll measure the pieces for you during the day.

Here's a pic of the whole frame, srry bout the delay!
I ended up with actually cutting the whole middle that sticks out to make the mesh go in to the fog grill a bit

The hardest part with all of this was definitely making the glue stick because the whole mesh bends a bit.

edit: also have the chrome rs6 grill on it!
breaks my heart to have the license plate on there

I was going to ask which glue you used and if you had any difficulty attaching the mesh. And paint, did you use primer, base coat then lacquer? I've got some primer and gloss paint so I was considering skipping the lacquer....not sure.
Yesterday I got delivered my mesh from goingfast in Germany....made in Taiwan... and maybe next week if time permits then I'll have a crack at doing my fog grills as well!

Loving it, ive never had a fast or decent car before, thought id treat myself for my 35th birthday haha.

Its an 09, 2.7TDI s-line quattro, pretty high spec to be fair, geeza before me had a stage 1 remap put on it too, so its nippy.

Previous owner had it for 14 months and neglected it abit, so ive had to spend abit of money and put abit of love into it, just to replace the front end and change to honeycomb grills now, the fact i couldnt find any honeycomb fog light grills has really been bugging me though, so im well happy now

Going to get the mesh and grill ordered now

Well over the Christmas period I've had a go at doing my honeycomb mesh grills. Made a pretty serious mess of plastic dust, particles and paint... got pretty high off the paint and solvent glue! But in the end they've turned out ok... I'd have liked to spend a little more time to perfect things but had to move on to other things. What do you reckon?

Coolio.... yeah they're lovely cars and you get a lot for the money. Nice for cruising, luxurious etc. I've had to change a few things on mine recently but that's fine as they're such nice cars, a pleasure to drive

Looks really nice.

That is pre facelift bumper on SE model, right? Fog grille look slightly different to the Sline facelifted one and to me, better with that mesh.

SE!!!! Haha nah man it's the 3.0 tdi S line Lê Mans 233bhp upped to 275 with about 40-45 mpg thanks to the stage 1 remap.

Ahhhh yeah the intercooler pipe....the Mrs said to paint it also recently when I did the crankshaft pulley/belt/tensioner etc....but I had had it off the road for too long and was sick of walking everywhere..hahaha
Coming from a car where we wanna see the intercooler piping I had thought that it'd be nice to see it on the A6 but yeah, it's better to paint it.. one day if I have the bumper off again! Got other more important jobs first, namely new subframe bushes :sos:

I've used Bostick Hard glue from Halfords but anything strong for plastics, for outside use will be fine

Well I did a fair amount of research into it...erm I guess your using what I used an ABS plastic mesh. They say youve gotta find what type of plastic your using to get the best glue..sounds about right. Anyway on the back of your car trim you should see the abbreviation for the type of plastic... can't recall myself but it's something like "A-something-something" haha.
I found a good glue to use is plumbers solvent cement. Got mine from Wickes, it's almost half the price of screwfix at £2.90 ish for 250ml.
It melts both plastics together like welding them... the science part of it is MEK ketone, which in hindsight I should've just purchased that from amazon/eBay as the plumbers cement can be a bit messy...though I found after cutting out too much plastic, the gap filling properties of Floplast helped quite a bit!

Also...a nice tip I found on a scale modelling forum was to make a sort of filler you can dissolve small shavings of plastic into the solvent and fill quite large gaps with that if you have them.
Using neat MEK chemical bought online or maybe a model shop, the plastic would dissolve better... I found the Floplast solvent cement struggled to dissolve any particles larger than dust you'd get from cutting the plastic. But it was fine for me...I could've done better but needed the car back!!
By the way...don't inhale that solvent cement too much or you'll go dizzy.. haha reminded me of the old days of poppers!!! :rockwoot:
