Locking the car while it defrosts

I don't seem to be able to lock the car after starting it and leaving it to defrost locked from the outside.

I tried removing the fob and using the key but that only re locks the diver door not the rear doors.

I could do this using the key fob alone in my old BMW.

Anyone know how I can do this?
 
Yeah I tried that a couple of weeks ago. Obviously a safety thing. I also noticed that when I left my car running with the daughter and wife in it I went into the supermarket (about 200 meters away), came back out and it was still running :wtf:. Wonder how far away from the car you would get before it would switch off or not. On that basis I don't leave it running unattended on the drive anymore in case some drives off with it.
PLUS, it is illegal to leave a car running unattended anyway :whistle2:

Taking the key away from a running car will not switch it off!

A safety thing I guess! If you leave your key on the roof (say) and drive off, and the key falls in the road, it won't suddenly stop running several yards down the road, it should just pop up a warning that the key is not in proximity.

It will, however, stop the engine being started, so if you get somewhere and turn off the ignition, you won't be able to start it again, until someone brings you a key!

So, leave car defrosting on the drive, a light fingered git steals said motor, car will get to said light fingered destination that could be over 450 miles if the tank was full.
I would have hoped it would cut out after a few hundred yards !!!!! BUT, there probably is a "safety" argument in case the poor thief is put in danger ?
Go figure eh !

With my fuel consumption any thief would be lucky to make it off my estate let alone 450 miles away

I don't think its a safety issue, you wouldn't want the engine to stop everytime you got out of the car. But the law is correct on this one, you should not leave a car unattended whilst the engine is running. However the cockpit is a nice place to be whilst the car is defrosting. Give you a chance to play with stuff...

As rich_16 said in the OP, with his (and my) old BMW you could take the key out of the car and lock it, leaving the engine running and defrosting the car. So it couldn't be nicked as it was locked. I thought this was rather handy.

Apparently you can't lock the Audi with the engine running, although I haven't yet tried it.

It's a bit of a bummer as my wife starts her bmw 4 series up then waits in the warm while I have to scrape the ice off my car freezing my backside off. This then prompts my wife to suggest I may as well de-ice her car for her while I'm doing mine. Thanks Audi!

Our fiesta has a heated windscreen and even though my car has less ice because of the direction it faces Ihave to wait a whole one to two minutes longer before I can safely drive off. I can't be bothered with scraping...
 
Well that's awkward, I always assumed if I took the key away it would turn off down the road.
Guess I won't be leaving mine to de-ice by itself anymore..
 
Not the best way to warm an engine up, why not just use warm water (test it on your inner arm is what I tell the wife )

Have you tried using both keys? Leave one in the running car and lock from outside using the second key? Don't know if it will work but worth a try?
 
I don't know how different the key is but on my 2016 A6 you remove the manual key from the remote and lock it that way allows the engine to be on and the car to be locked

I tried that and it locked the driver door but left the other doors Unlocked!
 
I tested mine this morning, and all the doors locked with the manual key, with the engine still running..
 
I think this could possibly depend upon whether you have keyless entry or not..
 
Every single auto manufacturer (that we know of) has auto-start available, except Audi! If we had known that ours doesn't have it, we would never have bought our 2018 Q5. BUT I have finally discovered how to leave the car running while locked! You will need 2 people for this, but here's how: Get in the car and start it. Adjust the AC or heat how you want it and press the door lock button on the inside of driver's door. Get out of the car and remove the actual key from the fob. Have the other person take the fob out of range and use your manual key to lock the driver's door. All doors should be locked now. When you return to the car, you will have to use the manual key to unlock the car. Once that's done, you can replace the key into fob and resume normal functions. You're welcome!
 
If you can get hold of VCDS or VCP you can enable the feature to lock the car with the key with it running and the key is outside the car.

I have done it on mine and it’s extremely useful.

Really, you wouldn’t buy a car that has no auto start, and no not all manufacturer's do have this especially in the UK. I can think of 20 things more important that that...
