AO09 NNN Audi RS3 Project

Yes I will be going 6XX, there is no info on the 6XX at this moment in time however and requires rods at minimum from what I'm being told,

Going to pester Simon for some more info now lol...

Damn. If i was going to do rods i would do pistons, crank and clutch upgrade. Think i might go with the TTE500. Should be more than enough kill everything on the road and not break the bank or need engine rebuild. Otherwise the cost of 6XX would hit easily over 20k AUD.

A little info on the steering wheel... This is not an easy retrofit, you REALLY need to know what you're doing. I personally will be surprised to see it on any other car. The only way to get a signal through the steering wheel to the car is via the clock spring. There are NO spare pins you can use on the clock spring like other Audi's (A6,A7 etc). Impossible retrofit right? ;)

ALL my buttons work, including drive select and start/stop. I've wanted this wheel from the moment I seen the TTRS!

I've also removed my start/stop button from the centre console to complete the install. I may remove the drive select button off the dash in time if it bothers me but not fussed about that one to be honest..

Note the logo says RS instead of R8.
Also note the stitching is red to match my interior, and the LED's on the steering wheel are also red.

May as well cover it in the same post but I installed carbon fibre interior trims on the dashboard and door cards. These looks awesome, the only spec my car was missing was probably these!

Something I'm testing for 034 at the moment.. This is an epic upgrade for the handling.. A rear sway bar. Love the way this makes the car feel, makes it feel a lot more RWD and alive

36000km on the RS3 and 3rd OEM discs.

thanks for posting your updates.

two questions:

1-isn't the new steering wheel thinner than the original ? love where the alcantara is now.
2-are these discs and brakes p&p?

regards

No , 3rd set front discs and every time arguing with Audi.

if my memory is ok: 1st 0- 7000km, 2nd 7000-19000km , 3rd 19000km-now arguing again.

my car is 1 year old and has been 7 weeks at the Audi workshop due to brake problems that's why I am following this super thread.

problem in my case are vibrations.

regards.

It is slightly thinner than the RS3 wheel but I prefer the feel of it overall.
The discs and brakes are definitely not plug and play, you need new brackets, lines and centre rings.

If you are looking for a braking solution contact @tomwrigleymotorsport for AP racing setup. He can supply discs and pads so you can retain your current 8 pot calliper. This setup works very well. Or if you want to go full monty he can supply AP 6 pot also which is featherlight!!

An update.. Front ceramics should be getting fitted next week, my OZ wheels have shipped from Italy and my rear R8 ceramics (356x22) shipped from Germany today :)

Lets use this post for some brake info;

Using the info below (this is preliminary info, I will weigh everything for myself soon), I'll be saving;

10.66kg of rotational unsprung mass on the front axle.
With an additional saving of 1.8kg of calliper weight on the front axle. (haven't weighed R8 pads yet)

3kg of rotational unsprung mass on the rear axle.

If anyone knows the weight of the RS3 rear calliper chime in please or I will weigh it soon enough

The brembo 8 pot caliper has a piston area size of 2840mm². The Audi Ceramic 6 pot Brembo calliper has a piston area size of 2956mm². This increase of piston area size is small (116mm²), therefore will be a very good match for the OEM master cylinder. The maximum recommended limit in size difference is 250mm², after that it is recommended you upgrade the master cylinder or brake feel suffers.

If anyone knows the Master cylinder size and rear RS3 caliper piston size please chime in

Brake weights..

RS3 8V front disc - 11.93kg
RS3 8V rear disc - 6.8kg
RS3 8V front calliper - 5.3kg
RS3 8V front pads - 1.8kg
RS3 8V OEM ceramic front disc - 6.00kg

RS6 356mm rear disc - 7.37kg

R8 front ceramic disc - 6.6kg
R8 rear ceramic disc - 5.3kg
R8 Front calliper - 4.4kg
R8 Rear Caliper - 3.5kg

Brake piston sizes... (Pi * radius² = area)

Brembo 8-pot RS3/RS4/R8/Gallardo: 28 + 28 + 32 + 32 mm > 2840 mm²
Brembo 6-pot 19Z/R8: 32 + 36 + 38 > 2956 mm²
Brembo 4-pot R8 Rear: 38 + 42 > 2518 mm²

"If anyone knows the weight of the RS3 rear calliper chime in please or I will weigh it soon enough"

According to my system its circa 2.7kg per rear caliper + 1.1kg for each carrier. So 3.8kg ish per corner.

Lets use this post for alloy weights;

Audi 8.5j rim with Pirelli tyre weighs 22.2kg
Audi 8.0j rim with Pirelli tyre weighs 22.9kg

I'm assuming the 8.0j rim weighs more because of the profile being 35?

I'd rather control via drive select menu haha. A switch like that has no place in my car lol.

@Arcam K-Electronic website, it was €420

Can you post photos of the install the controller box. My understanding is the controller box is fixed in the boot & the plugs connect to the back box is that correct. Is it neat im deciding between this module or the MTM module

I've also installed an Exhaust Flap Control Module.

I'm VERY picky. I didn't want to have an extra remote to control my exhaust flaps, I wanted a way to control the flaps via the Audi Drive Select Menu.

I finally found what I was looking for.

View attachment 113515 View attachment 113516 View attachment 113518

Overview of what this does -

Plugs into the CEM in the passenger side footwell.

Comfort - valves closed up until 4800rpm WOT (to protect engine)

Auto - Auto

Dynamic - FULL open at ALL rpm's

Individual - will follow whatever setting you set to above.

Cold start - valves will REMAIN closed UNLESS you switch it to dynamic. (Unlike OEM where it tests the valves open/close upon starting the car and you cannot open the valves by switching to dynamic)

Warm start - you will still get the crackles on start up and then the flaps will revert to closed position.

OH and if you're in comfort but want valves OPEN - switch traction control OFF/ON and the valves will open.
If you've done the above and then cycle the drive select modes and revert to comfort the valves will return to closed. It won't remember the valves open setting in comfort which is good.

Really really well thought out bit of kit. No error codes on VCDS either, it just works.

Links don't work it is a completely different install your module is fitted in the footwell.

the MTM module connects to the backbox & the controller box is fitted in the boot both seem to have different abilitys.

Some Audi S3 wheel bearings. Thanks @mjr901 again turned up the following day

Do you have the part no for RS3 and S3 bearing? Looks like it is the same thickness differences between the two like in the 8p platform...

Please tell more about the exhaust flap module. Any link to the different types? I thought MTM did this via sw?

I know of only 2 modules which you can buy

http://europrice.us/controller-package-s3-rs3-exhaust-valve

https://mtm-online.de/en/shop?article=7523

With the MTM module you connect the looms to the backbox.

The wires run through the same hole the original valve wires run through in the boot floor.

then you can just Velcro the small box in the boot floor. Very easy and no need for any holes.

My understanding is that the RS3 wheel bearing and possibly hub are 10mm larger than the S3 version.

What is the plan for the S3 parts?

MTM is simply a remote, and doesn't control the flap via a drive select menu.. If you read back on the thread I did do a post that covers all info regarding flap module,

The S3 bearings are 10mm shorter than RS3.
