B9 A4/S4 - Little Surprises

With the high beam assist, will that turn the high beam off when a car is in front of you say 40m down the road travelling same direction?

Ok just an update because I have been working with this. My loan car has a manual gearbox but it doesn't put on the handbrake automatically at all under any circumstances. I think the common denominator might be hill hold assist as my A3 also had that. Of course I could be wrong through..

That could well be it, my A3 had hill hold assist and as it's only £75 I added to the A4. Worth the £75 just for the auto handbrake feature. My wife has a Q3 and I still forget to put it on sometimes.

The matrix lights create a little gap like a shadow in the overall coverage where the car is. The remaining light elements remain on full beam so the car in front is effectively sat in a little light tunnel as your lights project beyond them and illuminate the road either side. I can be a little weird as I had a car with the same lighting system come up behind me and I wondered where all the extra light came from.

Yes I saw that happening with my car recently, I did wonder if the car in front could actually turn off their lights and use mine instead :)

Having main beam assist with the LED (not matrix) lights I find the system is late (at least to my standards) dipping the main beam. It also completely ignores motorcyclists! Luckily only 10 miles of my usual commute is where I need main beam, and I often stick to low beam as that's bright enough!

Surprising, but not in a good way, that the front seat belts rattle against the side of the sports seats in the S4! So when you do not have a front passenger the belt clanks against the side of the chair, and there doesn't seem to be an obvious way to adjust or fasten it.

Any other S4 owners found this, and preferably a way around it?

I presume it may not happen if you have different seats, as the S4's super sports seats have a hard panel on the side just where the seat belt buckle hangs.

No rattle in mine Geoff, well not yet at any rate.

Yes I have found this. It's annoying. Just have to adjust the seat to be behind it.

Is there not something on the belt you can move up and down it that the buckle rests on? I am sure my A3 did...

I looked for that, but couldn't find anything! It just rests on a fixed plastic button in the middle of the belt. Other cars have had a plastic clip that I could move up and down but I couldn't find such a thing on the S4.

Geoff

The solution I found on a car I had in the past was to buckle he belt whilst it wasn't in use. A bit of a faff, but solved the rattle.

Geoff, the height that the seat belt is attached to the car can be adjusted and I fixed this little niggle by simply moving it down to the lowest level it can go. Did the same on my side and it makes the belt more comfortable too.

Same here Geoff but now you've gone and flipping mentioned it, I'm gonna be convinced I can hear it

Push the cruise control stalk up or down firmly and it increments in 5's.
In my B8 you held it up/down to do this and I was disappointed that this didn't work on the new A4 until I found this today.

Yes, this is a nice feature, very similar to the cruise control on a BMW.

Does anyone know if there is a way to turn off the Adaptive part of ACC completely? I have a friend who insists that just setting it to the minimum is not as good as turning it into dumb cruise control so he can decide when to brake or change lane to avoid it!

I must say, using the adaptive cruise for the first time on a busy motorway the other day, I found it slowing so gently behind cars in the middle lane that I was forgetting to move into the fast lane before I had already slowed enough to make the transition a bit harder, as cars coming up behind were going that little bit faster.

It only really works if you either are content to follow the car in front (like on a single carriageway road), prefer to sit in the fast lane and rarely pull over (a bit obnoxious), or are vigilant enough to move in and out in plenty of time.

I do worry that things like ACC and Lane Assist will make us lazy and unattentive, particularly if we then find ourselves in cars without all the technology. I already struggle to park without cameras and front and rear sensors...

Oh I think there are many drivers who have never had any aids in their car struggle completely anyway and perhaps the only aid they should have is being locked up inside their house. Seriously though, I seem to be able to go from one car with all the tech to another that has manual everything, but then that's how I was brought up to drive. You are right though, it will be interesting to see how those brought up with tech cope when it all stops working. Computer says crash?

@gbrown - it does take a bit of getting used to! And persistence will eventually pay off! I have become used to it now, but I do sorely miss how the VW did ACC, it would show a picture of a car approaching the ACC distance line, so you knew when to pull out! The Audi just suddenly has a car 'appear! At the line which is a bit late! You get used to the distances with time however. Alternatively there is the Tesla which will change lanes for you!

Taking mine into the dealer (Boston Audi) on Monday for some checks to be carried out.
Received a phone-call yesterday asking me if I wanted the courtesy car to be `manual` or `automatic`.
Very nice touch.

When using adaptive cruise it also responds to your indicators. So if you are in the middle lane approaching a car in front, if you indicate to move out the cruise will delay slowing for the car in front. It's very well though through.
You can also use it on A and B roads and it will use the navigation to judge the speed for you, very useful when you are in a slow moving queue.

I would never go back to standard cruise control it was hopeless unless the road is empty.

Well, I have standard cruise control and use it every single time I drive the car.
Each to their own I suppose.

Me too- I use it on almost every journey and think it works perfectly

If you drive off in the car when it is dark with the headlamps turned off a message will pop up in the DIS to ask you to turn them on..

View attachment 108376 On the A3/S3 forum, one of the perennial posts is about keeping exhaust tips clean and the various methods people use. I'm pleased to note that after 2000 miles in my A4 the tips on the broader diameter exhaust are as sparkly as when I took delivery. With my A3 I would need to clean them after a motorway cruise and in any event every time I washed it. Anybody want to buy a part-used tube of Autosol?

What was the method you used to keep them clean?

Mine live in the little recess just next to the 12v socket in the front (ciggy lighter), they stay put just fine there.

Even when your flat out doing 120 (meters per hour!) on country roads?

If you have the luggage pack yes, if not the only places are either in the armrest or in front of the gearlever. If you've the luggace pack then put the manual folder in it and the glasses on top..

Updated my maps a few days ago via the MMI.
Was bombing along a 60mph `A road` outside Grantham this morning and my dash was flashing up `30` for about a mile!
Yet...there is a road closure in my village for the next 4 days and that is showing on the map.
`Good` and `Bad` I suppose!

Have the maps always shown public footpaths, I updated my maps the other day and just noticed them so either came with the 2017 maps update or I've not noticed before.

That's because the speed limit data is more "road atlas" data, but the road closure is more "live traffic" in terms of the data.

I've noticed this travelling along the a14 some spots shown as 50 or 60 when there are no current restrictions. It's ok normally but when I had the car on ACC taking the speed limit from signs/ satnav the sudden braking was a bit of a shock.

That's one of the reasons why I'm now thankful that I didn't go for the ACC.

I think the positives far outweight the negatives. I found that in the end 'ordinary' cruise was just about useless on our crowded roads and I stopped using it on all the cars I have had since 2002. ACC takes it all to a new level...

Y'all lazy, forget cruise and just drive lol :racer:

.....you'll be sitting in the back next :sign imnew:

Apologies for not seeing your request until now. Cleaning the tips is for me a progressive process. First stage is Autofinesse citrus pre-wash (which I use as part of my washing routine) or WD40. If they don't do the trick I resort to Autosol, a chrome cleaner I used to use on my bike as a lad and which is still sold. If Autosol struggles to remove the baked on deposits, I use a nylon scourer. So far, with my A4 WD40 or the citrus pre-wash have been sufficient.

If you don't like the cruise adjusting to speed limits that piece can be disabled, whilst keeping the adaptive cruise control function! I have a few places where it does this on my commute but is mostly fine! Traffic and city driving is bliss with it!
