Hi guys,

Recently the temperature gauge in my S3 has been getting up to 90 degrees quite quickly (within a mile of driving from a cold start). It never goes past 90 though.

Today I got in my car after it being sat for 8 hours and the gauge was already reading just over 60 degrees.

Does anybody know why this could be, or possible things to check?

There are no warning lights on the dash, and I am planning on getting it scanned at a local garage asap.

Cheers guys.

Ash

thermostat could be stuck open
coolant temp sensor could be broken, have a look at the coolant temps on VCDS see what the ECU is seeing

could well be the gauge itself, I think its a known problem on older units. there are places that can fit new dials, but you have to send the instrument panel off to them, so no car for a week.

vcds, look in engine AND instruments for coolant temp..
if they both read the same/similar number within a couple of degrees, and its for example 60'c, then your stat is stuck open most likely

Thanks guys, I appreciate the knowledge! Booked in tomorrow so hopefully it's the easiest fix out of those possibilities.

Ok so the garage I took it to said the temperature gauge has stopped working as it should and needs to be removed and sent off in order to fix it. He showed me the temperatures being read through the computer and they were around what it should be whilst the dash gauge was reading 90 degrees.

My car had been sat for 7 hours and was only running for a few minutes at this point.

Is this a fault of these cars gauges as he said, or could it be something else? Because my wallet will hate me.

Thanks,

Ash.

yep common fault, any of the instrument cluster repair sites will list this under the usual faults description
