Hey all,
I have just changed from a new Fiesta ST to an Audi A1 2.0 TDI Sline Black edition.

Stupidly I just really liked the looks and did not give the engine too much of a thought, as it seems great on the test drive and really nippy.

However I now have a bit of buyer remorse and concern, I only do about 15 - 20 minutes journeys in the week and maybe 30 - 40 miles every 2 - 3 weeks. I assumed that due to this being a small city car that the engine would be fine for this type of works and tuned as such.

However I am reading more and more about diesels and the 2.0 TDI it appears I was wrong and if I am potentially killing the EGR and DPF and am setting myself up for a costly bill.

Obviously a bit gutted, ultimately I know its my own fault but I just assumed a city car would be designed to deal with situations encountered in the city (short journeys / stop start driving)

So guess I am just looking for opinions, is my remorse correct?

Thanks

TBF, the petrol would have probably made better sense in this situation. However, all you need to do is get the car out on a run every now and again for 20 minutes or so at 2000 rpm (55-70 mph) and the DPF won't cause you a problem.

When you say now and again, is that once a month? Every couple of weeks?

I also heard that an EGR plate might help in blocking the EGR (there is one with a hole in it to stop the sensor going mad)

I am really suprised that a car can be marketed as a small city car when the engine fitted means its basically not suitable for city driving.

Thanks again

Once every couple of weeks should keep the DPF in good order.

Basically, at the speeds/RPM above the DPF goes through a cycle which effectively burns off the deposits caused by lots of short journeys.

HTH.

Mart.

I'm taking it i had that engine in my mk6 golf gt, no problems whatsoever. That was me travelling a mile to work and back, with some good runs between. I've also had 3 leon fr's and a mk6/7 gtds and never a problem. Did have an ST for 6 weeks brilliant except for those recaro seats...sore back!

Your A1 should have the common rail engine which did not suffer from the problems that the earlier cars had, with the different type of engine.

Hi, I've recently made the same switch - ST180 to 2.0tdi BE. My lease had came to an end and I came across my low miler BE , like u loved the looks and the fact u don't see 3 on the road every hour like the ST :) . I've had no issues to date with the engine and I do a mixed amount of mileage week to week. If not already, I'd consider Remap / tuning chip. I've installed the TDI tuning chip on mine and it defo moves it much closer if not equal to the ST180's pace from 3rd gear (50pmh upwards) and I'm still getting 48-50 real world mpg.

What made you change out of interest?

Basically the ST was a very quick car, but pretty un-comfy. Mine was also a little bit skittish, trying to put 215 BHP down through the front wheels at full throttle.
It was also very rattly and quite a few things needed sorting under warranty, it became a bit of a pain the backside to be honest.

Also I was not using the power, stuck mostly in traffic.

Audi is in a different class

Consequently though, a bit of a development.

The garage I purchased from knew how unhappy I was with the diesel and how considering I had explained the cars use how I thought I had been a little mis informed (some blame falls at my door though)

So they allowed me to purchase exactly the same car (same colour specification everything) that they had just got in but a 2014 plate and a TFSI COD manual, for an extra £1000

Oh my goodness, it takes a good car and makes it exceptional, the engine is soooo quiet an im getting much better MPG, and the insurance is cheaper.

We went through the same process when replacing our last (petrol) A1. I was keen on the 2.0 TDI as we were doing many more miles in it than originally but still wanted decent performance. If it had been available new we would have probably ordered a 2.0 TDI, but not available and I just did not enjoy the 1.6 TDI. So we ended up looking for a secondhand (very) high spec 2.0 TDI S line to match the existing A1 spec we had. Never quite found what I wanted spec wise in a 2.0 TDI but a random search including petrols turned up a late 2013 1.4 COD 140ps that actuall met my spec. We bought it and its just a great engine. Its also about 10% better mpg than our old 1.4 A1 and much smoother/faster.
