I have a A3 SB 170 2.0TDI Black edition judderscelerating When the Engine is COLD!

its all of a sudden I was driving and after 2 miles the car was struggling to accelerate when I give it some acceleration it judders over 2k revs. I did notice an orange coil light appear when this was happning and I pulled over upon googling this is aarently the engine managmentlight. I turned the car off and turned it on again and the light was gone. I called AA and he checked everything and said it seems ok and said he reset the ecu. it was fine after this I drove from bhma to mancester and no issues.

The next day i set off to work it happened again when the car was cold it was struggling and juddering when going over 2k revs. once the temp reached 90 it all seemed ok again.

2 weeks ago i changed the air filter and fuel filter as the serice is due the oil level is good, but I'm going to change it this weekend. everything else in terms of fluids seems ok.

any ideas what it could be??

I think your problem may be due to the DPF.

Limp Home mode may be what happened to you?

I had this on mine with the tuning box, which turned out to be the Dual Mass Flywheel. They are common to fail apparently. Has it been remapped or is it on a tuning box? When it's warm it was not as bad.

Mine was a 2012 2.0 170 with 30k on the clock.

If it's got a box on it, apparently it delivers too much torque and the DMF can't deal with it so bidders under acceleration. One way to deal with it is accelerate in a lower gear to what you usually would.
In the end I removed the tuning box and enjoyed it for what it was and the DMF was fine after

When my DPF was suffering I just found it was sluggish, not juddery

DMF would cause this at idle not under acceleration IMO

The "orange coil" light on the diesel cars has two purposes. Firstly, it lights up momentarily when the ignition is turned on when the glow plugs are preheating. Secondly, if it flashes whilst driving along, there is a fault in the engine management system.

If there is a problem with the emission control system on a diesel car (e.g. EGR), a different orange warning light comes one - the one shaped like an engine. There is a different orange warning light again, specifically for the DPF.

You need to get the car plugged into diagnostic software to check what caused the "orange coil" engine management system light to appear. The fact that it came on means that the ECU would have stored the error/fault. I would suspect an engine management sensor somewhere.

There's a lot of noise from a failing DMF yes, but I'm not saying it's failing as such (failing by coming apart), it just can't handle the torque under acceleration, fine once the engine was at temperature though

However, I had no lights on the dash

I had it plugged into the diagnostics but when AA came nothing was logged??

The following day I took it to a Audi specialist garage and again nothing found but I think that's because the AA guy re-set the system.

so its definitely just when the cars cold it judders and fails to pick up after 2k revs.

Arkious- the car is as is I haven't modified it from factory neither did previous owner. (what was cost of your repairs)

I didn't need any repairs on mine, removing the box allowed the DMF to work within its design limits. It was literally down to torque surge that it was juddering.

I didn't realise it was struggling to go above 2k revs, I thought it was just juddering as it went over 2k so sounds like it's a different issue. The juddering on mine was enough to shake the dash as I accelerated.

How violent is the juddering? Can you rev it normally when the car is at a stand still with the clutch disengaged (pedal pressed) does it judder then? I had no judder at stationary or when driving, just when accelerating. A failing DMF as aqibi2000 said would be quite shakey at idle, a one working out of its spring tension limit will judder only when accelerating.

it does go over 2k the juddering happens between 2k and 2.5 k and then its back to normal. its fine at IDLE literllay just when accelerating bet ween the revs described.

ill see if it shakes on stand still il when I go back to the car later

yeah that sounds exactly like what I had but maybe for a different reason

so when its idle and I'm revving the cars fine doesn't struggle or lag or shake.

I'm not sure if I'm being paranoid now but I think there's a slight rattling.

I'm based in the Manchester/Bolton area any reputable garages I can take it to?
