Greetings

I'm having a few issues with the cd changer and iPod connection. After abit of feedback/advice. Ive posted this in general chat as other models of Audi may have had a similar issue or be able to advise me.

I'm driving a a4 estate (3.0 tdi V6 quattro 06 plate b7). It's got the RNS-E stereo in it along with a Bose sound system upgrade (not sure if that's relevant). It came without a cd changer but a dension iPod cable.

I'm unsure what specific dension connector it is (maybe there're all the same?) I just know it's dension as it's written across the unit wedged behind the glove box.

So, despite having an iPhone 5-7 converter plug to attach to the iPhone 4 connector that comes from the dension unit, no music will play through the head unit from my phone. The cable is active as my phone charges but despite following various "how to play your iPod through the unit" videos on YouTube, it's not happening. I realise that with it being an iPhone 4 sized plug, it's going to be an old system and I'm not expecting to be able to control my phone through the head unit but at least expected it to play music.

So, I've got my hands on a cd changer today. Plugged that in but despite the changer working accepting and ejecting CDs, it doesn't come up on the head unit. When going into cd changer mode it's as though it isn't there and it just has the dension cd slots showing where you'd control your phone through (despite it not working).

Is the cd changer not working because the dension unit over rides something to do with it?

Basically, radio 1 is toss, I can only get smooth in certain places and there's only so much of chris Evans I can handle. I need the cd changer to work. Can anyone advise the best step? Do I need to remove the dension unit to do it, can they work together? Can someone explain how to fix the no music from iPhone scenario?

Forums are the best place for answers, and sorry for the novel but more information is much better than being vague.

Thanks, chris

Trying to find a non class ten card is quite had
rd, i'm in the same boat, a third party iPod link and no song names.

Has it ever worked? If not, it may not be coded correctly..

I've only had the car a few weeks, it's not worked since I've had it but the previous owner said he used the iPod all the time. I asked how he worked it and he's stated that he just attached the iPhone and away it went.

So to make sure it wasn't just my phone being awkward, I've tried my wife's and two of my mates and non work. So maybe the previous owner didn't have it working and swerving the issue.

As for SD cards, I've through of using that but each SD card I've bought won't work. It's seems class ten isn't compatible so I've got some 8s In the post. Planning to move the sat nav onto the SD card to free up the cd slot

Have a look in the engineering mode and see what coding it has - 55secs in on this vid

ok, so its coded as:
3 - A4
0 - standard/default
1 - A4 but this should be 9 really if you have Bose
7 - phone enabled
5 - Aux in enabled
8 - MFSW/CD/iPod/TV Tuner enabled

so the coding looks ok to me...
is this the Dension kit you have? - http://www.dension.com/automotive/products/car-multimedia-solutions/igateway

have you tried resetting the unit after attaching the CD player? While the unit is on, hold RADIO & SETUP down together for a few seconds until it reboots...

Yeah that is what the unit looks like Mike.

As for resetting it, I've only learnt how to do that since you posted that video so will try that in the morning as it's hoofing down outside so not going out there again haha!

So the Bose system, is it an issue it not being a 9 or whatever you said? It's deffo Bose, it's on every door card and what looks to be a small subwoofer in the boot by the wheel well

Thanks for your feedback btw

no probs, happy to help...
nope, its not an issue it not being 9, it wont affect functionality as far as I'm aware.

I can only think you have a dodgy connection somewhere if it doesnt work after resetting it....
Keep us updated..

For info. mines coded as 309757 (dont have TV tuner enabled) and all works as it should...

With regards to the iPod system, because every video I've seen suggests you control it by selecting it through one of the cd changer slots. If I have the CD player up and running how do you get the iPod to play. Would you use the aux selection, which always tells me it's active or something or is there another way (not that it works anywAy, but incase it makes a miraculous recovery) or is the dension thing out of your expertise?

the impression I get is that you have one or the other.
when you put the CD player in, did you remove the Dension? I think they both use the same connection to the loom.
The aux in is for a 3.5mm jack input if you have the appropriate cable - its separate to the CD/iPod connections..

If that's the case, then that could potentially be why the changer isn't working! I think to get to it properly I need to take the glove box out so I don't end up pulling and breaking something. I'll look for a guide on how to do it.

On another note, the 3.5mm connector is that a standard iPhone headphone socket plug? If so yeah I have one of those. Will have a session tomorrow see what I come up with.

Thanks again

to use the aux in, you'd need a lead like this one - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Audi-RNS-...102789?hash=item5d55e61dc5:g:ydsAAOSwUV9WoI8i
it plugs into the back of the rns-e, you can then plug pretty much anything in then with a standard headphone socket...

Spot on mike, thanks.

I'll get one of them on order. I'd be happy with one of them! In the meantime, tomorrow I'll get access to the dension and see if I can remove it and then let you know how I get on. That could be the issue as I just plugged he changer in, didn't remove the dension.

Mike,

Thanks for the advice last night. I got the glove box out this morning to get better access and removed the head unit also.

I pulled all the "fury tape" insulation tape I imagine off the wires behind the head unit to trace where the dension went and it had been properly wired in. Wasn't so much a case of taking a plug of wires out as they were all over the place.

I did however source where the cd changer plug was and swapped it for where the similar dension plug was and then like magic the changer started functioning.

I've left the dension in there, I'm not clever enough to start chopping wires to get it out but the changer is functioning now so that's what I wanted.

Did a reset like you said, fully functioning cd changer now. I've also got the aux lead you showed me in order.

Thanks for all your help.

Problem solved.

Result!!!

Glad you got it sorted!

Mike
