Yes, a common failure from what I've read, but having just taken possession of the motor last weekend, I've pulled the short straw; started up yesterday to hear this very brief rattle then all was normal, so alarm bells rang and knew it would have to be investigated...for a car of just over 100K, I guess that's quite good, but not a week after you've just bought the motor, but that's life...

How much should I be paying to have this work done please, and how long labour wise; knowing that others on here have been struck down with the same issue?

What engine ?

it's not showing on your mobile, but PC it shows fine, but anyway....it's a 3ltr V6

Most likely be the drivers side tensioner, mine does it from time to time, will look at it in the new year. If it goes on longer then a couple of second then I would get it looked at ASAP.

Thanks for this info, @B5NUT! ;) Just waiting for Audi to tell me how many labour hours; I know it's £167 for the tensioner.

A part from Audi, whoever does the job, will have to have a special tool to get into the cam area, as 2.0 and 3.0ltrs are very different; so I'm told!

Chain in v6 dti is on the back. I have seen videos that top tensioner can be replaced without taking the engine out

I guess I should clarify, that is £96 per hour which I duly rejected!

Forget about any Audi dealers doing the job, you need to find a local specialist. It does not take 20 hours to remove & refit the tensioner more like 2 hours.

I had Audi Ayr quote me for 6 hours, but I'm on the Solway Coast (Dumfries and Galloway) which is quite a distance to an Audi dealer, and would be great to find a true mechanic who knows Audi's in particular this model and doesn't faff about for hours on end with out the right tools!

got it booked in locally to have the work done now, so fingers crossed!

Hope its the chain , not just a rough start after a cold night . Oli drops to the bottom and sometimes can cause a short rattle

I went out yesterday and it started fine on cold, and came back after 30 minutes having brought the car up to tempt after a good run, went out again, and this time when I started it had the rattle!

thanks for confirming this @B5NUT!

so from facelift 2004 to 2008 they all had the same 3.0 engine?

There are different engine codes for the 3.0TDI, but they all have the basic same layout in respect to the chains.

well, had the right tensioner replaced yesterday, as well as oil and all filters changed, and no more rattle, and she pulls sharper, too!

All the 3.0 TDI are the same base engine, the "facelift" 245+bhp engines have different turbo, inlet, fuel pump and injector setup (with associated SW)
