Could be something simple like a boost leak, check the simple stuff first before jumping in with replacing the turbo

Yea go with what smurfworth said, seems a little hasty to be assuming its the turbo itself from a low boost problem. Maybe worth taking it to someone else for a second opinion on it?

Thanks guys, this is the second garage it's been to, first couldn't find anything and second has found the hole in the tubro/downpipe gasket.

If the EML comes on again we'll be taking off the Revo intake and running it with the standard air filter, eliminate that it's not that causing some of the issues.

I hope it's a simple case of a boost leak!

Just got the info, it's not boosting till 4000rpm instead of 3000rpm and boosts at 1.9 instead of 2.25

Ah now this makes more sense!

Whereabouts are you based? Just so we can see what reputable tuners are nearby as it sounds like you've been dealing with clowns which doesn't help. As smurfworth said, they should be checking the simple things first and then work their way up to the turbo, as automatically assuming it's seized up sounds like they're just trying to get as much money out of you as they can.

Thanks mate, too be fair I think the first mob were out of their depth but the second garage has been very helpful. He's only advised a new turbo might be required at a later date (I don't want to tarnish anyone's reputation) due to it being down on boost.

Going to have to run the car a while to see if the EML lights been fixed first.

Take it to a garage that can smoke test it, they'll fill the boost system with pressurised smoke and if it's leaking any boost you'll know straight away where it's coming from.

Update (03/05/2016)

Revo Intake is now off the car and sold, funds will be put to a new clutch. In the meantime the intermittent EML light has stopped so that's one problem fixed (or put to bed for now until I can actually resolve it).

After some help from @Den8 and @Tom5190, I've ordered new diff oil and a Haldex service kit ,both supplied by @mjr901 who has turned out to be the go to guy for all my Audi parts. I'll be changing all the oils this weekend in prep for the NC500 at the end of the month.

In other news, it's my birthday in 2 weeks and the mrs has asked what I want, so getting some money to put towards a second set of wheels with tires. Browsing gumtrees's finest I've come across a few sets of LM's, CH's and 0.01's (all in 18" reps) I'll just get whatever is handiest at the time.

I've read 18" LM's will look too small but I'm not willing to go 19" with the state of the roads up here.

Next update will have pictures...promise!

Update (07/05/16)

Less text more pictures......diff oil and haldex oil changed today as well as a few other bits and pieces.

Old and new haldex Fitler (tip for anyone else, the new filter is shipped with the plastic cap in the wrong position to protect the spring. Needs sorted before installation).

Old diff oil on the left, new diff oil on the right

Closer look at the old Haldex oil, I don't think it's ever been changed (31,000 miles)

Fitted the broken wind deflectors I had lying about

And disconnected the exhaust flap with some wire we had lying about

I've been having a rear clicking noise from the rear when coasting at 2000/3000rpm, I had thought it was my diff/haldex on the way out but after today it seems to have gone. Really hope so!

In other news the turbo is definitely not spooling right, will post a thread up for this separately.

Couple more updates due before the NC500 in 3 weeks.

Update (08/05/16)

Day 2 of the general service items.

Changed the pollen filter (don't think it's ever been changed.....bogging!)

Old and New

Didn't bother reading instructions so pulled the glovebox out (shouldn't have disconnected the wire though got airbag warning light now, need VCDS to remove)

Glad I did though, found loose a loose bolt and a bolt that'd fallen out into the fan casing (found the source of the fan rattle finally!!!!!)

Looking to fit an Aux/bluetooth in to my radio here, the radio removal keys aren't the easiest things to use.

That should be all of it for this weekend, more to come.

Update: 04/07/2016

Right! Where to start?

2 months have passed since this thread HERE and the issue is still present, after a few fault finding missions in May I eventually parked the car up at my parents and went on holiday, couldn't stand to look at it anymore.

So having now picked it up and fitted/coded an AUX input for my Concert II, I've been introduced to a guy who know's his Audi's. Long story short we've found a problem with part of the loom on the front of the engine, when "wiggled" the car drops massively in revs and cuts out.

It's the section that goes to the Cam Shaft sensor (the other plug that stems off and to a large plug next to that) at the front of the engine. I've no diagram to be anymore technical than that at the minute.

So is there any way to get a replacement section of loom? The larger connector is not connecting properly and the wires on it's last legs.

Still experiencing rough start up also, so new injectors bought since #4 has some carbon build up and potentially the issue above could be related.

Any advice on where to go from here with the loom?

So, 4 months down the line and a lot has happened, so it's about time for another update.

Cars always had a rattle from the DMF and a serious issue with boosting that we thought (hoped) was a boost leak, turned out to be potentially the turbo.

So a new standard friction plate and DMF were bought and a refurbished turbo (Turbo Technics) sourced since everything would be out.

Other bits done at the same time:
New Cam Follower
New Turbo Oil Pick-up/Return Pipes
New Engine Oil
New Engine Oil Filter
New Gearbox/Transfer Box Oil
New Fuel Filter
New Sump Pick-Up Pipe
Short Shifter and Solid Bushings (42 Draft Design)

I'll let the pictures do the talking (in no order).

All back in!

Long and short of it is, DMF is was shagged (lots of wobble) and the turbo was very shagged (more so than we thought). Seems someone ran a Forge actuator at some point and when reverting back to standard missed a bolt, so it only rotated on the one fixing, eventually seizing and causing my rattle/boost issues.

So for now, running in the clutch, but already a huge difference, only 400 miles left to go.

For anyone who hasn't fitted a short shifter and solid bushings, get on it, transforms it.

Price for all parts and fitting, just over 1200, pretty chuffed.

Next stop, brakes next year.

What a nightmare you've had, this is all because some ponker couldnt be assed to do a proper job when putting back to standard. Some ppl just dont care which is poor form.

Well done to your guy for finding and fixing the problems.

I was actually wondering if the mileage stated isnt what is says and has been clocked somehow, which would explain the excessive wear and tear you've experienced. just a thought

Thanks Ninjakid, the thought had crossed my mind but it's genuinly a very clean car otherwise (inside and out, plus underneath. I think the first owners modified and mapped it hence the standard clutch being goosed. Checked all previous MOTs and everything adds up.

The friction plate on the clutch was the original item and the cam follower was barely worn, also the sump had no foreign objects floating in it, so should have a clean bill of health.

Wear experienced may be due to the second owner having only driven it 2000 miles in 2 years of ownership, so it's sat a while with him and when being fixed for the CAT-D, that's probably explain a lot.

But, I'm slowly getting there and with the help of my local Audi nut it should be the best it's ever been.

Estimated that the shagged turbo was only producing 180-200 BHP (0.9 Bar Boost) so it'll feel like a brand new car!

Fair play for pulling the engine! Least now you can enjoy without much worry.

Glad to hear that your S3 is finally in working order bud, even though £1200 is still a fair amount of money, you've done pretty well there all things considered.

Can't believe the stupidity/ignorance of some people though, what an absolute joke, hopefully they'll feel the sting at some point of someone else's mare.

At least it's all sorted now and glad you're now properly enjoying the S3 as it really is a great car!

Thanks mate, yeah hopefully wasn't intentional but I'm glad we found the source of all the large issues.

It's been an interesting job learning how all these bits and pieces operate and interact. Now that a lot of the serviceable items have been done and the car (should be) back to 100%, it'll hopefully feel brand new.

A year of ownership and finally getting somewhere!

So time for another update, couple of months later, cars only just flipped 35,000 miles (not bad for an 07' plate).

Only one EML light since the new turbo fitted and it fixed itself within a day. cold start issues still about but no-where near as much. Speaking to a local VAG expert, carbon clean and injector refurb could be all that's needed.

On another note, tires are goosed on the front budgets on the back, so got a set of Continental winters for the front and Contact 5's for the rear, wait till summer and I'll get another set of 5's to match the back.

Other than tires, the heated mirrors have stopped working (rear screen still works) so picked up a set of an A3 to steal the glass - potentially get the casings hydrodipped and chucked on as well, but not sure yet.

Also got some B-Pillar trim to paint gloss black, new rear wiper motor and 8V style flatblade wiper blade and LED interior bulbs.

Not a lot of big things happening but lots of little things on the go.

Maybe update with pictures next time :expressionless:

35K is very good on an 07 car, beats my 62K by a fair bit! But it just goes to show how poorly the previous owner treated it considering everything you've had to repair, it's such a shame I just don't get the mindset of some people..

What's been done/looked into so far with the cold starts? Mine still has the intermittent (predominately) hot start up issue, changing the battery which was 9 years old at the time seemed to significantly reduce the troubled cold start ups (can't remember last time it happened).

Sounds good about the gloss black B-Pillars, it will finish off the outside nicely. It's the last external change I want to make to mine (bar lowering it if that comes under the same area) but I'm skinny skint..

Looking forward to seeing the pics in your next update, I really need to get around to doing my build thread!

So far:
Diverter Valve.
New Turbo, actuator and oil lines.
Battery tested (found to be fine).
Boost leaks (visually inspected and refitted whilst engine out).
MAF cleaned - going to try unplug and see if it still persists.
New coil packs.
New spark plugs.

Had a scope down the inlet and the valves look like they will need cleaned, there's also a slight misfire at idle. Could well point to injectors and/or the inlet runner flaps are stuck.

VCDS scan and take it from there, in all honesty I may have to sell it soon for a house deposit, so I need it working. Pressure is on!

This has been great to learn lots of new things, we sort of new it was going to be a project at time of purchase. However the list seems endless and it's starting to have an effect on every aspect of my life at the minute, seems a bottomless pit of disappointment.

Really has put me off any Audi's in future.

Sounds like you've found someone good to do some reliable diagnostics, hopefully the misfire isn't due to anything too expensive as you've already had to fork out a fair bit recently!

I get where you're coming from as I haven't had the best luck but nothing chronic compared to yourself or others here recently, so I can fully understand why you're put off going for another Audi in future. It's a shame as they're great cars when they're in fine working order but are very costly to repair, it's especially frustrating when it's due to an idiot previous owner or a terrible VAG design.
