When my new s3 arrives..I'm looking getting set after market wheels but I'm unsure on size...do I stick with standard 18s or is anyone running 19s on theirs?

I do prefer the look of 19s but want the technicality of 18

Bought mine with 18s but now have 19s.

19s fill the arches much better - they stick out towards the body an extra 12mm or so and also give you a larger tyre contact patch on the road.

What do you mean by technicality of 18 ?

My intial was either 18s with 8-12mm spacers and lowered 25 mm or 19 the same

And like cheaper tyres etc

18 inch wheels and tyres are quite a bit cheaper than 19's. They will give you a better ride quality and there will be very little gain in traction or improvement in handling. There is a good deal of difference between similar 18 and 19 inch wheels and tyres.

That's what I meant technicality in ride/traction/price etc

I can't see the point in skimping on tyres. It's the only thing that connects you to the tarmac. The rolling radius of the 18 and 19 inch tyres is the same so the only difference that you get is usually a slightly wider wheel with a 19, that usually puts the tyres shoulder closer to the arch making the gap look smaller. The correct offset of an 18 inch wheel will achieve the same result.

No matter what size I go for in the end,I will be wrapping them in eagle f1 a3!! Like I said it was more for ride comfort etc as my best mate has 20s on her 8p and asmuch as they look amazing, ride has been compromised in my opinion

Different shaped contact patch, surely? Not necessarily larger. Given same vehicle mass, same pressures, same tyres, and same diameter, the contact patch area will theoretically remain constant.

18's look just fine. 19's look a little fuller, but it's not like the 18" cars look like they're riding on polo mints.

Shape and size ?? Makes sense to me that a 10mm wider tyre on a half inch wider rim would give an increased contact patch ? - happy to be proved wrong.

19s have a 10mm larger diameter than the 18s so give you 5mm less gap to the arches too.

Given the extra width and different offset of the 19s the 18s look very 2 dimensional and flat in comparison. 19 above 18 below .....

I went 19s (on a bit of a whim, really) and opted for the REVO RV019s which are ridiculously lightweight and strong (under 10kg a corner and flow-formed). Wrapped in the new Continental CSC6s, the handling was transformed. Yes the ride quality is slightly worse (still ok by me) but grip, turn-in, response, feel all hugely improved. And I think they look perfect!

As a caveat, you will probably get a similar result with good lightweight 18s and rubber as well though - Speedline Turini or Team Dynamics spring to mind...

Cheers for input mate...

The wheels I'm looking at are either team Ds 1.2 or 1.3 or set of OZ ultraleggra!!!
I don't know why but think OZ look better bigger also...

Oh, I'm not out to prove people wrong Rob, just dispelling a couple of common myths.

1/ Wider tyres does not necessarily equal more rubber on the road, and
2/ more rubber on the road does not necessarily equal more grip.

The key is the relationship between force, area and pressure, which is a really easy one *blows dust of GCSE physics book*

Pressure = Force / Area

Therefore Force = Pressure X Area
and Area = Force / Pressure.

A nice linear relationship... that means that's all other things being equal, if you make the tyre wider you make the contact patch wider, but it will become narrower front to rear to compensate.

You can lower overall tyre pressure to get more rubber on the floor, but this reduces the per unit pressure on the floor, and with less mass pushing each sq cm onto the Tarmac, you may find the overall level of grip is lower.

Seems counter intuitive I know, and with only a 10mm change it's largely irrelevant. But I thought it worthwhile pointing it out.

I suggest that the wheels be at least 8" or 8.5" wide as the 7.5" width on the SB look too narrow - the handling might also improve with a wider track..
