Looking to get my07 1.9tdi remapped. It's the 105bhp version.

I've read that it can be taken quite far (160bhp) but I have some concerns.

1) the car is on 80k+ miles. Is it safe to tune this? Is it going to grenade itself as soon as I boot it.

2) as I'm new to this malarkey I'm not too sure if the process, I assumed that the car would be dynoed before and after but from what I gather the few places I've contacted just buy a map and install it. Is that the norm?

Can anyone recommend a tuning service around Surrey that has a good reputation?

Any advice would be appreciated. The bus is booked in tomorrow but I'm going to put them off until I know what's what.

Yes, as long as the car is 'healthy'. Only issue I had on my Mk4 Tdi after 2 months was my clutch started to slip, I fitted a new OEM sachs/dmf sorted it out.

If you use someone like Dervtech/Unicorn/Rtech they will put it on the RR, giving you a before and after printout. They can also map it how you want.

Is there anything inherently wrong with getting a generic map? Without the Dyno etc!
 
TBH I wouldn't tune one of those engines I wouldn't even buy a car with one in . I assume it's either a BKC , BXE or BLS. They have a reputation for rods being thrown out the side of the crankcase. Previous 1.9 TDI engines were great for tuning and pretty bulletproof, you could fit a bigger turbo and injectors on a 100bhp 1.9 and take it to 250bhp on the standard bottom end with no issues.
I am sure there are people around with tuned versions of these however they are like a ticking bomb, could explode at any second.

Oh ***... Really? its a BXE engine. Only had the car a couple of months... so i can expect this to go boom then?.
 
Theyv'e not all gone boom but there are plenty of low mileage, completely standard, well serviced cars had failures.
I believe that the problem is in the big end bearings and a redesigned part is now available.
Personally If I was you I would look into getting these changed and then go from there.
 
Is it just the bearings? Been reading some real horror stories...

The car has full Audi services history, will give the stealers a buzz tomorrow and see if a) its been done and b) what they recommend.
 
I drive a 2009 1.9 BLS and have it mapped since 90k, it's now on 160k and no issues at all. Had it since 2011 when it had 27k.

I've had the DPF and EGR removed and pulls like an absolute train, still does a calculated 65mpg all day long.
 
Later engines around 2009 used new redesigned parts I believe. So it seems that would be the way to go for the OP. Check to see if the shells have been changed. If not change them for the later part numbers and then go ahead and map the car.

With my luck all four rods will exit at high speed!!!!.

Seen a complete kit of OEM for £40 should only be 4-5 hours at the garage, for circa £300 I'm just going to get this done for peace of mind.

Talk to me about this bigger Turbo and Injectors you mentioned!!!! :)
 
Have been advised by two different tuning companies to leave well alone and not put any unnecessary stress on the engine!!!!
 
They will know about the weaknesses with this engine and the potential issues. It seems to be well understood that the main problem appears to be the big end shells, and if these are changed to the newer design the risk of issues is reduced. However I still don't think the bottom end of these engines are as strong as the older design AVB, AWX, AVF 1.9 PD lumps . They were pretty much unbreakable.
If I was you and you were thinking of keeping this car long term I would get the shells changed for piece of mind. changing them before anything fails is a lot cheaper than looking for a new engine.
 
From what I gather its a combination of cost cutting by using cheaper components throughout and the long service schedule of 20k miles between oil changes etc.

Its booked in next week for a flush and new oil/filter. My local garage wont touch the shells as it then makes him liable if it goes bang.
That said, was just on the phone to the local stealers and he is going to get back to me with a price.

Funnily enough, my local Audi garage and Audi UK are unaware of this issue!!!!

Dealers deny all and any knowledge until the warranty runs out, then suddenly you need a new gearbox or in your case big bearings.
 
Save the money you're going to spend on preventing it from blowing up and then probably tuning it up and sell it and buy a better one wii a bigger engine. In the long run it would work out better imo.
 
I'm not going to let it worry me anymore. It's booked in now at another place this Wednesday for flush, oil, filter, sump desludge and new oil pump strainer.

When you consider the number of cars that are running this engine, the number of reported failures is a very small percentage. A quick look at auto trader shows A3's from my07 with 100's k on the clock. Then on top of that there are the other vag cars that have the BXE engine in them.

It's been well looked after prior to me getting it and I will be treating it to a service every 10k (about every 6 months). It'll last me a couple of years then it'll be time for a change anyway.

Tbh, the tuning fund got wiped out today as I dropped a brand new gimbal which hadn't made it on to my insurance schedule!!! £1800 down the bog with that!

Got a replacement arriving tomorrow.

4th floor balcony... dropped straight onto nice flat hard paving!... well built and durable my a*se.
 
Ah, that Gimbal........and what's it doing on a 4th. balcony :sm4:

It's not anymore! Its in the bin, in a thousand pieces!. It was being used for a case study when I knocked it over the edge!...
 
Oh well, don't take anything valuable onto the balcony again, lesson learned.
