Amazing result from mufflerectomy tested on dyno

@Gazwould

I have done just that, and it doesn't sound anything like the performance exhausts on YouTube on the 3.0tdi A5 's and alike

On WOT it sound angry yes, a ripping boosty sound - but you only get a very slight v6 note - 5db increase over standard

Good news - I wouldn't worry about the temperatures. I put stainless tips right next to the bumper and I've done almost 170mph runs on the autobahn without melting the bumper, and driven around Italy in 38º sunshine. You'll be fine.

My final exhaust tips look like this:

We finished it off with a RS6 replica diffuser in this video.

Mind you - I'm not sure what that guy with the rolling road was talking about. Subarus are mechanical 4WD, like your quattro. No fuse will make the diff disappear ;)

yep that would have helped !! Its a 2010 A4 3.0tdi I bought a few months ago. Really think no tape then? I will keep a close eye on it. I remember on my last car a Leon Cupra, I wrapped the entire straight through Milltek exhaust and a few days later noticed I had melted the bumper ! That said that exhaust was very close to the bumper as the exhaust did not appear to miss the rear trailing arm properly unless strapped very high up.

I like the stealthiness of keeping it as quiet as possible. That said a bit more of the V6 sound would be good. I like the car under acceleration there is a nice noise but when you stand at the front of it when parked it still sounds a bit like a tractor. The main noise seems to be from the 255x35x19 tyres when driving which is a shame. I would like them to be wisper quiet and just a noise from the engine. Guy at work has just bought an RS5 now that sounds amazing. That said he says he gets around 17mpg without pushing it !

Oh Man! You guys got me excited with this mod.
I'll think about this with DPF removal.
Hopefully I'll get good result with power and torque.

well I need to be slightly careful about what I say about the mod as I did not have a dyno before hand but just had my a4 3.0 tdi revo remapped and the before dyno said 265bhp however the Robert McKenzie at autotec scotland Greenock thinks that some sort of map may have already been on it when I bought it in March. However I did notice a significant difference after I had the baffles taken out it was just more responsive.

After the map through its really good. The worst run over about 5 power runs after was 308bhp and 740nm of torque. Waiting 500 miles for it to adapt and will see where that finishes! Great fun but now need tyres.

Have anyone done it on 2.0 engine?
Interested if it makes any sound change?

So from the people that have completed the rear mufflerectomy who used perforated pipe and who used solid, is the noise difference noticeable between the two options , be interested to know

I would say yes as a straight unperforated pipe is no longer functioning as a silencer , x 2 and on a 3.0 tdi can only be a glorious release of V6 sound .

All depends on whether you have had the DPF removed. This is the single biggest killer of noise in the exhaust system.
Straight pipes and no DPF is pretty loud.
If you want to get an idea how loud it will be with straight pipes if you have a DPF , split the system in the middle under the car and see if you like it.. With straight pipes it won't be quietened much.

Reactions: markm,
It wouldn’t do much difference in sound on a 2.0, would it?
As in for the straight pipes?
Can’t be asked to stuff Rockwool or expanding foam in the boxes, after gutting them.

This thread is a very interesting read. I hope it can be resurrected as I've got a few questions and hope someone could answer them.

I ride an A3 1.5 TFSI COD and my muffler looks like on the picture below. It has two tailpipes on the left side and I need to add two more to the right side as I'm going to convert the rear of the car to the symmetrical S3 look. I've been looking at other options but none of them suited me, mostly being too expensive. I'm not looking for loudness as I like my quiet 1.5 TFSI, however I wouldn't complain if this mod made the sound a little deeper.

What I need is to add two exhaust pipes to the muffler. I spoke to my auto mechanic and he said it wasn't easy. But after reading through this thread I see that it could be done. Could it?

What if to open the muffler from above, gut it, then bore two holes on the right hand side and weld on two new pipes, symmetrical to the existing ones on the left hand side?

I didn't see my muffler open, but I guess it would have the same structure as all the other mufflers in this thread.

May I ask a few questions?

- Why did you put any pipes (perforated or non-perforated) inside the muffler? Can it be as an empty box with a pipe in and a pipe out? What do those pipes change?

- Why to put rockwool inside? For a deeper sound? I can't think of any heat insulation.

- What if to open the muffler, bore new holes for two new pipes and weld those pipes on without removing the original muffler contents? Would it still lead exhaust fumes through all the pipes out?
