HI All,

Picked up my new car today and there are some things that I need to fix and I was hoping if you guys could send me in the right directions.

The driver window isn't going up or down. I can hear the motor moving but nothing happens.

There is a wire running through the boot between the break lights. No sure why but hope to find that out soon.

The head lights are "foggy" (not sure how else to describe them) as they aren't damp.
Does this mean new units or can this be fixed.

The radio is also asking for a code and it's not in the manual or service booklet and I don't have the radio booklet.
Is there a why to find it out or is it gonna cost me loads of money?

Don't mind doing things myself :)

Thanks in advance

Do you maybe where I can find a wire diagram or a repair manual?
Would like to have a working version of ETKA as I used it for my Audi 80 but it's hard to find :(

Also called Audi Glasgow for some help with the radio and they told me I need to come down with the car. Get it booked and that it will cost me 30 quid for the code... maybe I'll just look into a new radio instead

If you pull the radio out, the code may be wrote on it somewhere. If not you should be able to get the code from the chassis number on the radio sticker.

Found a new issue today
The fuel gauge was on half a tank but the warning light came on and as I just got the car I wasn't sure about it.
The be safe I filled her up. Turns out that the tank was nearly empty.
So the gauge isn't working as it should. The worst thing was that it started to leak Diesel all over the place after I stopped.

Has anyone any idea how to get the gauge working correctly and if they have had it before that it spilled all over the place.
It has stopped now but not liking the part of wasting fuel and money as it doesn't have a small tank :(

was unable to exactly see where it came from but it came from under the car.

But where under the car?, from the tank?, tank is situated roughly between the rear wheels behind/underneath the back seat.
You'll have to get under and trace the leak, could be from anywhere.
Access to the fuel guage sender/lift pump (if needed) is in the boot floor under a round black inspection hatch at the back right (when looking from behind car). Both side interior boot panels and the boot carpet/insulation need removing to access it. Not hard but a pain.
Good luck!

got the window part from eBay as you suggested and after watching several videos. I decided to give it a go with my brother in law. following the video we drilled out the rivets. the problem in having now is that non of the rivets we have are working.... any idea which size they need to be?

5x20mm is what I used as far as I remember, I ordered on eBay as it's an unusual size, it's the length that's important

cheers thanks. been to halfords and b&q and the 5x12 from b&q are the same size as the 5x19 from halfords... :(

Are you near Glasgow?, think I might have some, you need about 5 I think?, can prob dig a few out for you.

Yeah i'm not far out of Glasgow. G78 area. The thing is that the car is on my future in-laws drive and we taped up the window hopefully it will hold for the night. And looking to get it fixed tomorrow during the day (ASAP). When would you be able to dig them out and when could be meet up?
Also how much do you want for 4 of them?

Did you get pm?

Had a good day today with the help of mrnice :)

once i got the correct rivets the window was done in less then an hour.

stopped at soundmaster scotland to get info about replacing the radio.
went with the unlocking of the original concert +cd and disc changer.
25 quid and took him 20 minutes but everything is working as it should :)

hopefully no new / major issue's this week so i can spend some time in finding other bits and pieces i want / need to change

Sounds just like when I bought my a6 tdi sport avant.

Both front windows wouldn't work, radio in safe mode, abs light on and foggy lights.

I bought both front window complete assemblies and just swapped the lot over.

Radio code I got of eBay for £6.

Abs fault was the sensor ring fix for £1.20.

I've got a headlight polishing kit from halfords.

Nice motors once you get on top of the issues.

The saga continue's...
Handbrake failed and it turned out that the passenger side back break was running hot.
Was advised to replace the Discs, pads and calipers. (which I did as some moveable parts were solid)
After this the MOT failed on break issue's in the front, track rod and leaking tank.
Went to a different garage as they wanted me to get the fuel tank pressure tested but nobody would touch it as it was full of diesel.
Different garage found out that at some point they messed about with the access panel / fuel pump and didn't close it properly..
So the mystery of the Diesel leaking all over the floor has been solved. :D
Still some stuff to sort as the list starting to add up :(

So far in repairs and service spend 1148 quid

That's quite a list of work and quite a few uncommon issues you've had, but nothing terminal, as has been said before, 1.9 a6's will run to super high mileages but not without cost/work on the way, just stick with it, every wee issue dealt with is one less thing to worry about!

just my luck then.
well i hope it will slow down a bit.
the mechanic of the last garage did advise me to get the belts changed as we don't know when it was done last and they looked a bit thin. 170k on the clock now.
and the brake issue noticed on the 1st might be related with a ABS sensor issue.

So yeah tried to replace the ABS sensor.. we finally got it changed but then we couldn't get it to stay in the hub.
Turned out that the wheel bearing hub ring were the sensor sits in was rusted off hence it was loose.
Unable to get the bolts out so another trip to a garage.
Phoned them up before to see how much it would be. Got quoted 150 quid which was better then the expected 300.
Went over and he got it done and working in a day. Costing me 120 quid so even happier.

Last night my wife got a bag from the boot for shopping and everything was fine until we came home.
The alarm kept going off ever couple of minutes.
Opened and closed all doors / windows and the boot. No luck.
After a few times I noticed that the boot light stayed on so i'm guessing that I found the issue.
Noticed that the push arm on the rightside of the boot is moving about as the bolt is loose.
Will try to get that sorted soon but in the mean time is there a way to switch off the Alarm at all?
Tried to lock the car with the key but no luck.

Anyone ever been on a longer distance ferry with the car and how did it go regarding the alarm?

Thanks

I've been cross channel with mine and never had any issues, not that you'd hear it from the hold anyway!

Haha that's very true. Just afraid it will kill my battery as it's a 15 hr journey

There's a wee button in the drivers door opening (on the b-pillar) that you can press when getting out of car which I think disables the alarm, mine has one anyhow.

From what I've read online that switch turns off the interior sensors only unfortunately

Ah, ******, maybe have a spanner at the ready to quickly disconnect battery earth terminal before leaving the car?

I have suffered from the haze on the headlights. Used a bucket of warm water with fairy liquid, and a sheet of 2500 wet and dry. Keeping it very wet. After that went over it with T-Cut and much better now

Meguires do a headlight polishing kit in halfords for £20... well they used too
