Sorry to be a bore but im just confusing mysef reading throgh various threads...

Ive got myself set on an a4 avant but walked away from a 170 quattro due to reading various threads on here and getting poor mpg on a test drive (and the trip computer reading 26mpg over its previous 30k miles)

Now im left with the dilema of a 170 or the 134/141 bhp front wheel drive options, i would 100% get the 134/141 remapped and the 170 a possibility but what kind of mpg would i be expecting on these? - i am aware that these arent the most economical diesels out there but anything 40+ mpg for every day will be ok.

also in terms of driveability (previously owning an s3) which would be the one to go for

I have the quattro and would get that hands down so much better to drive than the FWD. I get about 510 miles to a tank which is only 40 less than the Leon FR I used to have and the A4 is much heavier + has quattro. If MPG is what you are worried about then stay away from the quattro as you wont get high MPG figures all of the time.

I have 170 quattro, Shark stage 1.
Normally 520 to a tankfull. Thats approx 41.5 by calculater, not trip.

143 FWD auto target is 600 miles to a tank, generally get 550, best was 650. Over last 3000 miles the display says 44.5 mpg, some of which is towing a 5ft wide box trailer.
Bear in mind the quattro has a smaller tank than the FWD.

There will always be some people who get significantly better mpg than others and it's usually fairly dependent on their location and the types of journey they do. Live in a fairly rural location doing 25 mile trips predominantly on dual carriageways and you will get pretty good mpg.
I don't think you will really get the most out of a Quattro car if it's only running 200 bhp. I used to have a 210Bhp Passat 1.9 TDI estate and 99% of the time FWD was absolutely fine. The only time I ever really got stuck with it was trying to pull a caravan across a wet grass field. Even at Santa Pod I doubt it would have been quicker being Quattro with the extra transmission loss and the weight involved.
There is a fuel economy penalty for Quattro, you can see it in the official mpg figures the difference between a Quattro and FWD is around 7mpg.
I would be looking for a manual 170 FWD TDI mapped with some nice lightweight 18 inch alloys.

The Quattro car has higher road tax due to the higher CO2 output.
