Hello guys,

I am new to this forum and I hope you are going to help me in choosing the right Audi. Previously, I posted similar post in regards A5, however I've realised that A4 is better in terms of fuel consumption than A5(please correct me if I'm wrong).

I am about to buy Audi A4, 2008-2010. Following my research I can see that TDI's are more economic than petrol engines.

My budget is not the best, therefore I would like to get something which will have the best mpg. Mostly I will do motorways.

I know you(mostly boys) like strong cars and powerful engines, but I am a girl and I am not bothered with the engine power/bhp :)

Can you please, advice me which engine is the best in terms of fuel economy/mpg. I've heard that 143bhp engine are the best in terms of mpg, however what is difference between 141 bhp, 143bhp, and 170 bhp - they all are 2.0 TDI, aren't they ? :)

Thank you people, all your answers are much appreciated x

In theory.
The 136 TDIe should be the best on MPG, but we can barely break 50mpg in ours. On a 3600mile trip round Europe it averaged 48. Which is a joke compared to my old A6 1.9 where I got 57 to Le Mans and back.

How many miles a year are you doing?

Hi Linda the A4 and A5 engines are the same. They share pretty much all the same drivetrain and chassis. Don't get hung up on a few mpg because in the real world it won't make that much difference.
If you want the best economy there isn't really that much difference between any of the 140 bhp engines.Newer models have stop start which helps to massage the figures for the goverment tests but real world motoring on longer trips that makes no difference.
Get a manual and avoid cars with big 19 inch wheels and tyres and quattro. Multitronic cars are potentially unreliable and costly to run.
How many miles a year are you doing ?.

Hi, thank you for your reply. Probably around 20k

Hi, thanks for your informative info. I think around 20k, but I may drive more than that. Sounds like 143bhp vs 170 bhp is quite same then.
I have Audi A3 S line, 2007, 2.0 TDI 170bhp. My mpg on motorway max is 44mpg - which is kind of ok. However, in town it's 30mpg, which is terrible...I feel like I drive Range rover or Q7 by having such a bad mpg

For some reason that particular car you have at the moment isn't that good on fuel.A lot of people seem to have issues getting decent mpg from that model. I wouldn't say the 170 bhp and 140bhp A4's have similar mpg, not in the real world they don't. A lot of it comes down to how the car is driven and what traffic conditions are like.
The goverment figures can be very mis leading as the driving cycle doesn't really represent anything near real world driving. Thats why so many people can get no where near the manufacturer claimed mpg.
If an A3 is big enough then maybe a newer 1.6 TDI would be a better bet.

just get the 2.0 tdi common rail engine (143hp) and you should be fine. if it's mainly long distances you drive, make sure it has cruise control (if it doesn't, just retro fit it, £100 if you do it yourself) and you'll be fine.

I hate to say this on an Audi forum but a mate of mine does motorway driving and has a plastic fantastic Honda Civic and regularly gets 68mpg on the motorway. It wont rust either as its made out of recycled plastic :blow: I do like to annoy him about the plastic feel of it but it does seem to beat the VAG group cars in the MPG area.

We shouldn't compare a hybrid honda with a diesel engine, it's just not fair.

its not a hybrid its a 1.6 diesel i-dtec. Very impressive MPG but boring as anything and just strange boy racer styling. The older versions were better. The new one coming out is even worse in my opinion, but I am sure lots of people will love it.

Thanks for info again :). These new cars are quite expensive, in some point I would rather buy an old car that costs 5-6k with slightly bad mpg than a new model cars that costs 12k but with good mpg. I doubt i will spent 5k for the petrol within a 2 year by driving a diesel car with/around 2.0 engine :)

Sorry for the thread hijack ! But retro fit cruise control, is it really that cheap ?

Essentially you need to replace the switch gear on the column. The saloon and estate are different because the estate has the rear wiper.
The lower trim panel needs replacing on the column to allow the cruise stalk to be fitted.
The cruise control needs to then be enabled by VCDS.
I presume the £100 is if you source second hand parts and DIY. New parts are of course a lot more expensive.

You can get newer cars cheaper with the same engines and drivetrain but they aren't Audis. The Seat Exeo is a very good car, essentially an Audi B7 A4 with a Seat badge on and the same engines as the B8 A4.

When it comes to Seat, I only like Leon. But I still have no idea about Seat in general, and which engine is the best...But thanks for info :)

What about an a3 or golf 1.6tdi? They're meant to be really good on fuel

Volkswagen is something I would consider as a last option. I know they really good but their design is ugly - I think :). I am sure many people will disagree, but that's me haha

The B8 Audis just aren't full efficient. I used to run a B5 A4 2.5 TDI Quattro Avant (V6) and could easily squeeze 44mpg out of it which about the same for the new B8 models driving. The B8 A4s are bigger, and I suspect a lot heavier.

I'm not trying to go off topic, If you're looking for fuel efficiency, then seriously consider a Volvo V50. They only made them to 2011, but the 1.6 diesel DRIVe version is simply unbeatable. It still looks great and it'll do 60-74mpg all day long. Some models produce under 99g/km CO2 emissions, so zero road tax. It comes with more toys than Hamleys if you opt for their LUX pack, including electric sunroof and folding mirrors. It has Volvo's class-leading safety features and is probably the most comfortable car I've driven with leather and heated seats. Good luck with whatever you buy.

Yes, it is. Just get the cruise control stalk assembly off ebay and install it. Once done, all you need is someone to enable it on the computer. If you don't live far, drop by and I'll do it for free.

Thanks ! I will get it done at some point, I have Vag Com so I would be able to code it in, will get a stalk at some point
