Hi guys, it's been a while.. In the past I have had 3 B6's 2 x 130bhps and a 2.0.. I have just came for a VRS octavia so have had a 1.8T before too.. Also had A2, S6, 1.8T bora, skoda superb TDi.. Just picked up this cabby yesterday, 2004 1.8T sport, 109k, been in the same family for the past 8 years.. good genuine motor, 18" A5 alloys? fully navy leather. just a few niggles as below.. any help is appreciated.

1. Roof isn't working - I knew this, but car was genuine and hopefully it's something I can sort.. When I test drove the car it did nothing, but last night it got about 1/2 way before stopping..

2. Concert radio - not coming on with the ignition, not illuminating with the lights and also not showing in the DIS.. pulled it out last night.. but all connections are factory and look good.

3. Headlights are foggy - looks like they just need a good sand.. are the halfords kits worth it or am I better with wet & dry and then polish? Also, there is a bit of what looks like silicone or rubber along the top edge of the headlight.. it looks factory, but is discoloured, can this be removed or replaced? is it just for wind noise or something?

Will get it a good scan with vag-com this evening, but just did a full manual open this morning as it was saying roof wasn't secure.. one thing I noticed was loose cable in the boot at the side.. seems like it's came off it's runners..

Some pics of the cab and then my previous motors..

The cables are for the stupid shelf that holds the roof when down, there is a handle which levers from side to side smack in the middle above the shelf, the idea is you can operate the handle to lift the shelf once roof is up and gain more room, but in reality they just phook up in minutes and stop the roof opening!

There is a small micro switch on the bottom of the shelf runners which tells the ccm that the shelf is down so its ok to open roof, check the switch is actually closing its on the right at the bottom, usually when the cables come adrift like yours the shelf does not go fully down and does not hit the switch ergo roof wont operate.

Is the plate for sale?????

Cheers for that, I don't think there is a shelf installed!! When I lift the rear cover up I can see straight into the boot!! could it of been removed? Why would you want the plate? could be for sale no probs

Ahhhh I understand now couldn't really make out what has gone on in the boot but I see now yes the shelf has been removed so you need to check the right side bottom of the plastic gear and look for a small micro switch.
Either tape the switch closed or cut the 2 wires going to it and join them together or if your not too far away I can sort it easily for you.

cheers, will get a look at it tonight hopefully.. and also do a full VCDS scan..

In the 2nd pic of the boot interior, is it the switch with the brown wire attached to it?

That looks like it but its hard to tell, its on the right hand side o/s inside the gear casing.

checked it this evening, so it was already cut and joined.. scanned the car with VCDS and got this

02000 - Switch Position
008 - Implausible Signal

Cleared the code and the roof is working a treat.. awesome!!

Just the lights to sand and polish and stereo to get working.. again with the stereo it was just getting a communication error from vag-com

1 Fault Found:
01304 - Radio
49-00 - No Communications

I got a couple of hours at the car over the weekend.. during the evenings I took the headlights out and gave them a wet & dry and a good polish.. firstly 600 grade, then 800, 1200 and 2500.. then finished with a DA and megs 105 then finishing compound.. I borrowed the DA and had never used one before, great job and very easy and quick to restore the lights.. new LED side lights fitted too.

One done.

Then onto the car itself.. gave the roof a scrubbing with Milton fluid, then a power-hose.. then washed the car and then used Tardis on both sides and rear bumper.. another wash.. scrubbed the roof again with megs cab roof cleaner and hosed off..

Roof 1/2 way

then dried the car and swapped the wheels for RS4 reps I had just bought off a mate.. car all dried and ready for it’s first family outing. Kids and dog had a blast in the back with the roof down.. then while at the in-laws for tea I managed to sneak out and get a coat of collinite on the body.. then later than night did the front and rear windows with Halfords rain repellent. Will hopefully get home tonight and get the megs protector on the roof.. but overall really pleased with it so far..

Radio reception keeps going, so need to inspect and sort the aerial in the boot.. also might get xenon kit fitted at the weekend - I have a 6k kit in the garage from my skoda superb..

Very Nice. Your Cab looked like mine once upon a time until i got stuck in with the mods.

:)

Cheers, not much more planned to do.. Although ****** roof stuck 1/2 way yesterday, so will scan with vag-com tonight and see whats up.. thinking the sticky motor, but will see..

PS.. I had seen your thread.. yours looks awesome.. :)

Thank you dude! I have so many more mods in the pipeline but i can only allocate a small amount each month to do this.

With regards to yours..no need to. It looks great as it is! :)

Ah dont worry too much about the roof. Yes could be sticky motor. If not, see what VAG-COM says. It happened to me once..I did a manual reset using the red key and TOUCH wood, its ok.

Oh and quickly...

Checking if they are OEM A5's;

Get a torch and crouch down behind the alloy and shone the light on the inside spoke and see if you can see any audi 4 ring signs with part numbers. That probablably the only way i think.

Na, they aren't original ones.. I have them off the car and the RS4's on the car.. Will just sell the A5/S5's on.. Scanned the car last night and cleared the 02000 - Switch Position, 008 - Implausible Signal error.. roof working away again.. I'm suspecting the sticky motor, so will get that done at some point over the winter..

Oh right. I see.

Nice work with the scan. Yep, seems like the thing to do over the winter.
Glad its working anyway

Not contacting the switch properly, common fault, grease it up using vaseline is best!

2 micro switches in front of roof under plastic cover.1 switch each side of mechanism 1 sensors open 1 sensors shut.
If the latch mechanism gets stiff it doesn't always hit the switch enough to tell ccm to close the deck.Or there is a switch that the roof triggers when it's down to tell deck to shut. You need vcds to see which switch if any is faulty

Thanks Darran,
SUPER helpful as always. Im trying to prepare myself for this incase it happens in future (hood currently working fine touch wood albeit the infamous roof warning light flashing 10times upon engine startup)

But for the life of me (and possibly Technics100 above) I can figure out where these swtiches are to see if I can give them a good greasing.

Are you referring to where the boot is? Ive Googled its location to no avail.

Dan.

Dan, Don't grease the switches grease the mechanism. If you look up when the roof is closed there is a plastic panel on the inside of the roof which covers the locking mechanism remove the panel , about 8 or so posi drive screws , you will then see the mechanism in talking about.

Thanks for that.. I will try and get a look at it..

Fixed the aerial last night, it had kinked in the boot joint, so spliced and soldered it.. All good now.. Getting there!!

Awesome work!

I tried to do this a few months back and got as far as removing the rubber which holds the wires inside but due to not finding a kink immedaitely, wasnt sure how to follow it down and pull the wire out. Basically, i was scared to tug anything incase i rip something..

Thank you! Ive had a detailed look at the schematic. Just to clarfiy, the plastic panel that we are talking about is located in the boot (of course) on the underside, where the roof would go into? Presuming, the roof compartment lever is open (to allow roof to open/close) ?

Sorry, being super thick here. I have looked at this but ive got a heavy hand and break things easy. haha

Mine was about 3 inches from the boot (Actual boot lid) end.. The copper earth wire had the outer covering broken, then feeling all other ones at the same point they all felt broken within the covering, no visible signs outside though..

Is it not the plastic panel above your head if you are sitting in the drivers seat with the roof closed?

Another small update, fella called at the house tonight and did a AC recharge. great fella who does a full vacuum clean and re-gas for £40..
