I'm away with the family at Lake garda and traveling up from Croatia the wheel bearing started humming. Popped into a Audi garage near the apartment and got them to price it up. €509 haha! Needless to say it'll wait till I get home and I'll do it my self.

I'm not too sure, but has that car not got GEN2 wheel bearings, if so, maybe get both sides done some time after you get back by a local VAG indie. I got VW to replace both front ones on my old 2000MY Passat 4Motion when they started humming, but I don't think that the price was HUGE. Though a lot later, too late I discovered that someone had dropped one of the hubs and sliced the brake wear wiring and gashed the brake flexi pipe - idiots, the sliced wiring was just tucked up under some insulating tape, it was the extra insulating tape that caught my eye prior to next MOT.

If it ain't broke don't fix it :)

I done my front offside about 18 months ago and got a year out of the near side before it needed changed

Think I payed about £250 first time at my local garage and done the second one myself

I've done then many times on many different cars. Done both sides on our old a6 and on my old a4 same system.
Still in Italy though and the noise is some what... Noisy. I'll be home in a week and it'll be sorted.
Till then I think I'll go enjoy since birre morreti

I seem to remember when my wife and I went to Lake Garda for a week (Limone) I was a bit disappointed when we approached a pub/bar, instead of Italian piano accordion music it was "umm pa pa" for the benefit of their industrious German visitors from over the border! These Germans knew how to work/jump queues for the boats - it is Lake Coma for us for a quick week's holiday at the weekend, flying out to Milan in an orangish plane.

You're right, it's incredibly German here. We've drove down through France, Germany, the Alps through Austria into slovinia, then Croatia. I swear since I left Germany I've seen more German cars than any other country. Even in Italy. They're every where. Which sort of helps as I speak more German than Croatian, Slovinian and Italian.
Heading into Switzerland tomorrow via the Monte blanc tunnel. I hope the wheel bearing doesn't catch fire and reproduce the 1999 disaster (too soon?)
Also looking forward to the echo of the constant drone of the bearing bouncing off the walls.
The Ferraris and the like shall be jealous.

I had the bearing changed on my B8 after it started humming. A decent SKF, SNR ,FAG bearing will cost something like £70.
A local indie dealer near me charged £100 to change the bearing as you really need a hydraulic press to do the job. Even with the correct tools I watched the guy doing it and I never would have separated the hub from the bearing at home.

I've managed it plenty of times. It'll be my ginger brute strength.

I had the offside front replaced at Reading Audi last week.

Bearing was 111.75 plus VAT. Labour was £195 plus VAT.

Now I can't hear the offside front humming, I thing the near side needs doing :(

Flipping ouch, my VW dealer charged a lot less than that maybe 6 years ago for my B5 Passat, maybe that price for both sides!

A puller kit works too if you can't get a press or your doing it in drive :)

I've done plenty with a vice and a very careful hand using a grinder.
Got a pretty impressive bench press at work though. Spitting distance from work.

My God they're easy to do on these cars! 1 hour 30
