Hi all

I came out earlyer and went to start the car .. 3.0 tdi and it took around 8 turns to fire up it is low on fuel computer says 20 miles in tank would that cause it

Yes this could definitely cause it! If it's very low on fuel, the in tank pump may be struggling to get enough fuel to properly prime the engine.
As a side note, my C6 3.0TDi is the only car I've ever run out of fuel in! The range lies almost as badly as the DIS MPG, I ran out with 30 miles still showing.

I put some diesel in and still doing it i think it was that low that its picked some crap up from the bottom of the tank and cloged the filter on the pump going to investigate today

Yes that's a definite possibility. How old is the filter?
Unfortunately it's a sealed unit, so it's not possible to have a look at the filter element and check for contamination.
Clogged in tank pump strainer is also quite possible.
 
Ive had the car for 9mths and ive not changed the fuel filter its somthing i was going to do in the next cpl weeks but ill do it now to see if it rectifies it and yea im going to check the strainer too . anyone know how to get the pump out the tank is it an easy job or a right faff ..

Sounds good to me.
In tank pump shouldn't be too bad. there is an access hatch under the carpet right behind the seats in the saloon. There is a sloped piece of plastic with a hatch in it, that cab be removed, and then I think there is a rubber or plastic cover over the actual access hole. It should be similar in the avant, not sure which you have, but I have the saloon. I've not actually had a look myself, that's just from memory.
 
Cheers for that i have an avant but shouldnt be to much differance i wouldnt of thought

I turn my key once and it cranks until it starts.

I would never run a car that low on fuel. I can cause all sorts of problems.

DIS is a guide only not fact. DIS can be changed via VCDS.

Why won't you look at you fuel gauge next to the speedo?? That would have showed no fuel!!!!!

Exactly, it was the first week I had it and I assumed the DIS was fairly accurate. Yes, but the fuel gauge is also not particularly accurate either. IIRC there is a procedure for calibrating the fuel gauge, but I've not done it. At the moment the first half a tank is more like 2/3, and the second half is more like 1/3.
I always brim the tank and then fill up on the light, which is about 5-6 days for me. But I assumed 30 miles meant at least one or two left...
