Due to covering more miles than i was a year ago im forced to sell the s3 for something a bit easier on the wallet

Since i love the audi so much im going to go for an a3 with the 170 diesel engine (same as i had in my golf before the s3). Im just sat on the fence if to go for the quattro or the fwd... i have no doubt that ill find it slow and will probably end up getting it mapped shortly after purchase but im just unsure if its worth the extra premium?

If you're selling the S3 due to fuel costs then the fwd would be the way to go, it will be less costly mpg wise than the Quattro simply because of the weight alone. Not only that but less to go wrong. If you're after the 170 then go for the Common Rail, much smoother & less problems.

Loosing money by depreciation on the S3 will pay for a few years extra fuel. You'd have do mega mileage to before you start saving fuel costs.

You'd need to do 15,000 miles per annum or more (roughly) to start saving money from the fuel.

I have a 170 common rail and if you want DSG then you have no choice but to go FWD, if you don't mind then go for manual as some of them are quattro.

On balance, I went for DSG and never regretted it although it would have been nice if the audi engineers thought of this and made the 8P 170DSG quattro like they have with the 184 in the 8V.

I went from FWD to Quattro and will never go back.

I currently have both. 170 S tronic and 170 Quattro.

The Quattro is a far far superior drive, but I ended up having to go for an S Tronic due to health, so saying goodbye to the Quattro (its for sale if interested). When I got the DSG I literally felt like I was driving a wacky races car (Ive had AWD for my past four cars), the stability, handling, cornering agility and grip of the quattro is brilliant - this turns into super confidence in your car in all weather conditions.

Such a shame they never made a DSG Quattro in the 8P...would of been a real keeper.

p.s no real difference on MPG to be honest.

I have a FWD 140 diesel and have pretty awful under steer when gunning it out of dual carriage way roundabouts. Some of it will be from the tyres as I've just moved from 16's with lovely sticky ps3's to some god awful yokohama on the 18's (soon to be changed), and the other reason will be down to my SE's stock springs/dampers which give me awful body roll. However even with that all fixed I can't help but feel the sheer torque of the higher end TDI's really need AWD apposed to FWD.

Generally in good conditions with a good set of rubbers FWD will do just fine, its only once you start stressing the car by introducing sharp turning, adverse weather or adverse road surfaces such as gravel.

If you want to 'Drive' then it has to be AWD.

If you want to get from A to B with the shopping, then FWD is fine.

(can you tell hate much I hate my FWD)

:)

Don't you mean rear wheel drive for a proper 'Drive' :sm4:

Much to the contrary, I like to drive in the rain and snow. RWD in this country is useless.

One car to do everything. AWD for the win.

I want for the CR 170 quattro as I stay in Scotland, drive a lot up the highlands and have kids. Granted it's about 70kg heavier than the FWD but now mines is remapped at 460Nm the quattro comes into its own.

Go FWD for MPG. My friend with the same engine code as my audi got 10+ more mpg than i did in my audi with quattro, He had a gti. Also when i had the quattro i got the dreaded drone sound and i had to replace the control chip as well. Not worth it and would never invest into quattro again.

Petrol engine, entirely different subject of conversation.

As I said, I have both 170TDI FWD and Quattro, the difference is minor. No drone at all, both sound identical.

Massive shame!!

I only do a few thousand motorway miles per year so never looked at quattro twice, DSG miles more useful for me in traffic etc. And it's just a better gearbox by every measure.

I agree, literally no point driving manual diesels unless you want a Quattro 8P, then its worth it.

Yeah...even in mine I agree if it had quattro like the 184BHP diesel in the 8V, I don't think I'd ever sell my 8P...if it had a longitudinal 3.0tdi...now we are talking!!

Had my 170 CR quattro A3 for nearly a yr now and had it remapped back in December. I do 22 miles to work on A and B roads and easily average 56mpg without even trying with A/C always on.

Never drove the FWD version so I can't compare but I love the way it drives and holds the road and was only expecting mid 40's mpg when I bought it.

For real?
I wouldn't drive fwd after quattro again.

Gti to the same engine a3. So i think it's a k03 2.0 tfsi.

Fwd is excellent, just make sure you have a good set of tyres.
