OK folks I am fed up with reading how well some S3s go with a tuning box and might actually get round to trying one (just out of curiosity). Looking on various forums the DTUK seems the most common in the UK whereas the JB1 seems most common in US (particularly on VWs). My original plan was/is MTM (after reading the excellent write up between DTUK & MTM) but interested in an intermediate step just to play with first and given the feedback from the US VW forums defo seems like a sensible step.

My understanding (which may be wrong of course) is that the JB1 is currently the only one that attempts to look at air/fuel ratio which will be critical for long term owners of both the car and box, is that correct? I know people on here have bought both and I am curious as to whether they still use them and how many miles they have done whilst using them - I have a manual S3 so again want to hear of any clutch issues etc specific to the manual. I am not actually interested in peak power nor 0-60 times more just making the current power delivery stronger, car still has a couple of years warranty which I am reasonably keen on keeping but am already aware of flags/risks etc etc

From those VW forums which are in the UK and US they seem to rave about the JB1 and in fact I struggled to find anybody with a negative comment, probably more so then DTUK but I got the impression that the JB1 is slightly more advanced in its electrickery and logging of information in the ECU which Audi could interrogate if they got interested. JB1 seem to have a massive following in the US for their BMW tuning so should absolutely know what they are doing.

p.s. if this has all been done already then sorry to waste your time and please delete this but please point me to it as I have already looked!

This part of your question sums it up for me I'm afraid! - "car still has a couple of years warranty which I am reasonably keen on keeping but am already aware of flags/risks etc etc"

Go careful if your warranty is important to you.. TD1 flags (remap indicator) are impossible to undo, and boxes change logged values outside of standard/expected parameters, so if VAG did some digging they'd know you've been modding.

This then leads to the MTM approach, as it piggybacks the ECU as supposed to specific sensors, but I have no idea how/if these affect TD1 (probably not) or any logged values (possibly)...

TL;DR - if you like warranty, no...

Without going into the warranty side of things...

In short the JB1 is better than the DTUK, can't say which product produces most power but it adds fuel so it doesn't run lean like the DTUK. Just for that reason alone the JB1 wins for me

Just a note on this, I have the JB1 to and the value for money is far better in comparison to other boxes. It offers a higher level of monitoring, and allows for manual tinkering if you're confident about doing minor adjustments.

I bought mine from AP Automotive in Telford, they are selling them at £399 delivered with the data cable & now with Brexit its not much cheaper to buy from USA.

Sorry, very old thread. do you guys know if to install the TMC Box you need to lift the car and remove the bottom panel to access one of the connectors? I am after a box which works well and it’s easier to remove when needed.

I did search around but I couldn’t find a definite answer to my question..

I had a TMC box for a short time. Undertray needed to come off to connect one of the channels / sensors.
