I was wondering if there was anyone out there that had bothered remapping their vr6?

I know the quoted gains are pretty poor, but I was considering it as my throttle response is a tad excitable, making pulling off at a reasonable speed a bit jerky....
Don't get me wrong, if I want to have someone at the lights when 2 lanes merge to 1, easy and smooth.
If I want to pull off on a Sunday, smooth.... But that normal speed just means riding the clutch to smooth it out, and my clutch is worse for wear anyway so this isn't ideal.

Does anyone else have this sort of issue? And has a remap helped? What's the economy difference like?

Also what sort of economy do you see?
I tend to use redex in every tank as I bulk brought 4L and it's costing me 25p a tank, which means if I get an extra mile I've got my money back. I try to use 98 fuel as well, although on the odd occasion this hasn't been possible.
Cheap fuel and town driving sees me a mere 200 miles, I've had just shy of 300 doing a long with 180 of those being on a motorway. Having said that from the same tank it did 2 140mph runs on an... Airfield.
In the year I've had the car, the average mpg has settled to 23.3mpg, but I oftten see 16/18 on my 4 mile trip to work.

Be interested to here what others see,

Cheers,
Mike

As you say the re-map potential on this engine compared to turbocharged cars really doesn't look that impressive, although people have and say the torque increase is nice.
I personally haven't bothered, goes well enough for me. So I've done more cosmetic mods such as changing the grill, seats, and mirrors.

As far as the jerky pull off my car also used to do this, did make it tricky to drive. Use to feel almost like an anti-stall kicked in if your throttle wasn't perfectly balanced, which then meant you'd either stall or kangaroo!

It was actually cured by having the "juddering when changing gear at high rev range" Audi engine ECU update done at its last service. I wanted it because my car was suffering from the 2k rpm flat spot, which this update was known to cure. But it also cured the pulling away challenge. Win Win!
Not sure if you've looked into this yet, but it can be seriously painful to get a dealer to do it. Worth it though if you have a few of the symptoms.

Your MPG does seem quite low! I usually get around 28-29mpg per tank, with half town half motorway journeys and around 30+ on a long run. I can always get 300-330 out of a tank of V power, and my record is 390miles!

I have found that these motors really do need to warm up though, and cold the economy really is awful so that'll probably account for your MPG as your commute is quite short. My commute is 20+ miles so the car gets nice and warm.

Interesting.... I wonder whether a map would clear this issue or not?
I'm aware of the software 2,000rpm issue, the 2000rpm itself is the only symptom I'm aware of... This maybe something different to what your talking about though.
I've driven an 07 a3 (Audi wanted 10k for it) and that felt a lot tighter than mine, and was smooth to pull away, but mine is a 54 and cost less than half that so...
As for the "anti stall" that rings true, I know exactly what you mean.., gets annoying because everyone thinks you can't drive the car properly - you don't understand how temperamental it is! But I love her anyway.
Ball park, how much is the software update?
I've not even seen the magic 300 miles yet.... Although I do 4 mile trips across derby, or 90 mile trips down the M1 so it's a bit mishmash.
Yeah in bad weather these suffer horrendously, Christmas Day got 24mpg down the M1 in the wind and wet, I find bad wind and wet weather really damages the economy. On back roads being very careful last Saturday I managed to coax it up to 31/32 mpg or so, but it was so boring... They were 50mph roads with cameras though so I didn't have a lot of choice mind.

Nope that's the update Im taking about and for mine atleast cured the setting off, the 2k flat spot, and gave it more poke at the top of the rev range.
Before it used to make the traffic light grandprix impossible. I never even bothered because 7/10 I'd make a tit of myself!

The later cars from around 06 onwards should have the later software revision. So shouldn't suffer with this problem. I'm now on engine ecu revision 8035, updated from 7000.
Smooth as anything.
I had mine updated FOC while it was last in for a service.

You should definitely be seeing at least 30mpg on a motorway run! I do agree though the weather does definitely affect economy.

The most I ever got out of mine was sat in 50mph average speed traps and I got 38.8mpg.

Don't suppose yours is the red one on a private plate I've seen driving round Derby?

Joe

Never had an issue at the lights - never been beaten when I've been going for it lol.
Mine doesn't have a flat spot at 2,000. In fact if I'm crawling in traffic (10mph or so), 2nd gear and it hits the 2,000rpm mark whilst constant throttle, it kicks you in the back which is a tad dangerous if you're not aware of it.... Another reason I'm thinking of getting a map (or software update now).
FOC, not familiar with that one?
Motorways - I suppose it depends on cruising speed. Good weather from derby to Bedford will see around 28-30 mpg. Speed varies though as the first stint has no road works apart from Leicester services, then not till J19 where there's 10-15miles of 50 average. The 90 mile trip will take about an hour and 20 so that will give you an idea of speed.
Most I've had is a shameful 32. I can Eco drive though - managed to pull 73mpg in my last 2.0tdi 57 plate Jetta
Nope that ones not mine, I think I know the one though, P88 something?
Mines black (DG54 URL), looks standard apart from alloys replica from new bigger S models, but not actual Audi as the don't make them in an 18", like this

I'm driving an '05 manual and appreciate the jerkiness at low speed / pulling away; i find its worse when then engine is not fully warmed up although still persists. Adapting to the clutch has helped to smooth things out - not bringing it back up too quickly and light on the accelerator.

In terms of economy, DIS is averaged at 26.9 mpg through mostly A road driving and some motorway. For me this means a semi-respectable 310-340 to a tank. I have had a faulty pre cat lambda since the day i picked it up; will be chasing both pre-cat sensors at the weekend - MPG may get better still.

Brad

When you replace the lambda sensors can you take a few photos, it's on my "thinking about doing" list.

Just got off the phone with Sunset Derby (VAG specialists), £85 for the latest software update providing there's an issue registered with the version on it... Otherwise they can't get the code to do it.... But then it's £20 to find out if there's a known issue with this model....
Does anyone happen to know if there's a logged issue with the 54reg software version (no idea what version that is)?
Not sure what to do with that. Don't want to throw away £20 or £85, but a remap is a lot more...

Yeah, I can smooth it over, but it's abusive on the clutch and my clutch is 45,000miles old (have a previous receipt for a clutch change at £1,200!) so don't fancy doing that all the while.

Thought I'd give this an update
So after the awful weather recently I'd lost the back end twice at relatively low speeds (eg I wasn't driving erratically, but by the same token with passengers I'd probably have been going 10mph slower) and so the car has been in and out of garages 3 times in the last month.
Personally I suspected an anti role bar to have snapped because of how the car felt, so I took it to sunset in Derby, explained the feel and they checked it over (for free)- found nothing wrong but suggested getting the 4 wheel alignment checked. Since they don't have the kit they suggested kwickfit.
I've heard a lot of bad things about them and didn't fancy it (they wanted £99), so had a ring around to see who else I could find. F1 autocenters were my next stop, used them in Chelmsford, Harlow and Bedford with great service, but the Google reviews for Derby were pretty dire, with many saying after the work was done a higher price was quoted, and the phone call to the garage went along the lines of £30 + £15 + £15 + vat, but maybe cheaper if it doesn't take long, but maybe more..... No thanks.
I thought I'd check Audi just incase.....£285 for alignment - pass.
Eventually stumbled across TC Harrison Ford in Derby who have the Hunter alignment system (widely regarded as the best system on the market) and they wanted £65, so I dropped the car round there.
Long story short after 2 attempts they couldn't get the toe in tolerance (-0.07 degrees out) without destroying seized bolts and so didn't charge me. They said that should I wish to get the issue sorted fully, I'll be looking at around £250 as the car will end up on the ramp for about a day plus parts etc. All in all the service from them was very good and I'll be using them for alignment in the future.
Since I was expecting an anti role bar to set me back £180 and so far it had cost me nothing, I decided to go ahead with the software update (£85) and so far it seems to be running better, but hard to say how different as its only had town driving so far, but it seems worthwhile. It seems like the mpg has gone up, but I'll find out next weekend when I have a 200mile run. To date the most I've had out of a tank is 306 mile, so we'll see what she gives

Sounds like a bit of a wild goose chase on the alignment but glad you've got to the bottom of it, same with the update :)

I find mpg reasonably respectful given the size of the engine, 30+ is easy to achieve without trying too hard. Benefit in town is you can stick it in 6th and bimble around at 1000rpm without any bother! I'd considered a remap, such as the APR offering, but decided against it - despite adding a little further up the range it appeared to lower torque a touch at the bottom end. Considering I use that bottom end around town I thought it wouldn't add much benefit to my style of driving and might even end up being less enjoyable at those rpms/speed.

Chucked some later spec bumpers, lights and after market wheels on instead, so at least it now looks like a more modern A3 ;)

Yours looks looks pretty mint mate, thought about body upgrades on mine but I want to swap it in for something more powerful soon so can't justify the money. I don't see 30 out of mine often, but my daily drive is 4 mile each way across a city centre so... To be expected really and I don't try for the mpg, usually do 3,000RPM before changing so....
Probably look at an S3 next as they can be tuned much easier, more mods on the market and it's not ridiculous money to get them to stage 2+ which would be my plan
