Are most of the B6'ers moving on now? What did you go for?

Just a query whilst on here seeing what's new. My S-line 190 Q is at 165k and the costs are mounting up.
In the last six months I've had a coil pack, alternator, cam belt, arms. The (original I think) clutch is on it's last legs, so that's another fairly hefty bill, and she's starting to look tatty along the roofline and front arches.
At what point will you/ did you bail from your B6 and what did you go for? Especially interested to hear what other 190 Quattro owners went for... Kind of tempted by an A5 black edition. Needs to have a similar level of spec/performance. Has to be a Quattro too! :)

It's enevitable that circa 12 year old cars will get to a point of diminishing returns so of the 1000's or 10's '000's left on the road a small percentage of this will be "enthusiast" owned (that can +/- preventative and know how to maintain), or can justify repairs.

At 80k i'm still a spring chicken and always wanted this shape (B6 1.8t Avant - USP skirts, dual exits etc) so plan on keeping her as long as she'll go or I feel liek a change. I look forward to everytime I see her, and everytime I drive her, I look back at her everytime I park. Probably only do 5-10k a year.

Saying that I have access to a modern diesel as the wife has a company car so my next car purchase will hopefully be again for fun as long as she keeps getting cruisers.

I love the look of A5 Black but know a few people that feel there's no power and the seat position is off-set to pedals and a bit odd for some.

I'd go Allroad on big shiny and air :)

Tdi B6's just keep on going! Usual maintenance items. I think there a very reliable bus..

Royal,
I understand what you are saying that you seem to be throwing money at the motor to keep it on the road, and i understand that if you are due a clutch it another large expense, another way to look at it, is most of the large bills have been taken care of, and the body work can be fixed over time.

You paid for most of the trouble to be fixed why line it up for someone else to enjoy your motor and the money that you put into it, when your nearly at the end of the issues.

you could purchase a newer car and have similar issues, least you know the history and the repairs of your current.

just my 2 cents, i feel the b6 is a great car and still looks good among today vehicles.

on another note my friend purchased a black edition a5 (new) from a b6 and in the end traded it in as it was giving him cronic backache and he said it felt like he was sat at a slight angle to the steering wheel.

Had my Avant 4years and before it was my sons for 2 so its been seen on my drive for ages but still think the lines are clean and good looking. So far it hasnt caused any big bills although the belts etc on a 2.5tdi are costly.Nice drive too Quattro auto.Someone down the road has just got a new RS6 Avant black windows and wheels too but seems a bit too bling to me and he hasnt got a space on his drive to keep it.My neighbour has a garage with a big forecourt full of cars for sale but he still drives his Mazda pickup J reg which he has had from new .Its perfect for his dog and bike and he says has only ever had the starter replaced

I've still got my b6. 1.9tdi, had it about 7 years now and it's just gone last 200k miles. It's had a fair bit of stuff done recently, but has still cost me less in maintenance than my father in laws 59 plate octavia, so I'm keeping it for now.

I've had clutch (twice - long story), alternator, all front arms, dampers and I'm sure there's more. It's looking tired, but having just finished renovating a house it's served me well. I'll literally keep it until it dies or gives me a huge bill I can't justify.

When it comes to replacement I'm tempted by another b6 1.9tdi, a b7 1.9tdi, or an octavia vrs, maybe. I want something relatively sensible as my second car is a b5 1.8t quattro, that I am considering putting a big turbo on etc, so I try keep the family car relatively unmodded

I have been looking at 3.2 B7 avant or saloons, but they are rare and looks like I am going to have to hold off anyway now with a new kitchen to buy and just paided off a Disneyland holiday too........so treated hime to new shocks this week as being 12 years old and only 71k miles, they feel a little tired to me

nah! not ready to get shut of my B6 Avant 2.5tdi 103k plus on the clock had it five years and still love it, I I was to move on it would be a 3.0tdi whatever but must be Audi but not anytime soon, cheers from Colin

I've recently been looking for a new car and have a decent budget, but sadly nothing has caught my eye except the Mercedes A class AMG, so in the end I've booked mine into the body shop for a complete front end respray and a few other bits, whilst that's being done the wheels will get a refurb then it's back to me for a while longer. I think after all that it will have a date with the crusher once I'm done.

Gonna get the front end of my own tdi sport resprayed and me wheels in for a refurb also, intend to hang on to her for another 2 years at least and then upgrade to a C7 3.0 tdi bi-turbo A6 when they come down in price a bit..

I've recently been through this dilemma as my timing belt was due and on a 51'plate car with 202,000. It's a 2.5tdi so a pricey job that Adamms24 did for me but still 1/3rds the cars value. I had some agonising decisions. 330ci, B7 S4 would have been my next move if I made it but the old girl will see me through the next few years and then...... a B7 RS4.

I know this is for B6s, but the B5 site is like Dodge City after a gun fight. I'm in the same predicament. 175k miles on my A4 Amtrak, needs timing belt and water pump later this year. While I'm at it, lower arms needs re-done. Cut corners and should have used Meyle HD kit. You live and learn. Did the rusty parts of the bodywork again last year, but front wing driver's side looks like it's going. Still pulls like a locomotive, and drove back from work a couple of days ago, driving it hard and it didn't miss a beat.

What's out there? Been looking, and it's like Asda car park on a Sunday. Nothing has caught my eye apart from the A4 Allroad. Reviews are mediocre, and they're not particularly well spec'd for a £30k car new. Reviewers basically say go for an A4 Quattro Avant. Trouble us, I don't like the standard A4 avant, it's characterless, and the new B9 is way too expensive. Colour selection on the Allroad is poor too. Black, white or grey metallic. There's quite a nice metallic blue, but they're pretty rare.

Don't shout, but I also quite like the new Hyundai Tucson.

Thats the fatal flaw with the 2.5tdi the belts. It just wont be worth hanging on until the cost reaches the cars value unless you intend wait until it pops .Mines 04 with 120k and Chris did the belts etc at 110k so I think I am alright for some time .Had an 86 Accord once that went to 120k on the original belt

I have a 2001 2.5 Quattro,

As has been said with a bit of spit an polish, it looks like a stylish modern car - I still love the shape tbh

Mine has done 212k, and still drives really well

A few bills recently - rear wheel bearing and front driveshaft, but that's all

I had the belts (and water pump) done at 170k, so I will not do them again

I do change the oil at least every 7k (at least twice a year)
