Had this done to my a3 170 tdi s line a While back after seeing it on Facebook but not never got round to mentioning it or reviewing it after seeing nothing but very good reviews about it and I have to say I would highly recommend it.

Car starts instantly from cold and is smooth straight away whereas it was rough for a few seconds before and took a couple of seconds to start but now upon driving it is ten times smoother and a lot more responsive on acceleration and feels like I've found some horses in the engine that had gone missing.

I'd say fuel consumption would be better but I've not noticed much improvement as I've been enjoying the improvement in the car.

I'll put the link below, it's well worth the money and from looking on their Facebook they operate in different parts of the country aswell.

https://www.facebook.com/Enginecarboncleanyorkshire/

Do you think this would only be worth it on a diesel? I saw this on wheeler dealers the other day and it looked interesting! How much does it actually clean tho! Wonder if it would be worth it on a petrol

Works on petrols aswell apparently although the guy said it tends to be a more noticeable difference with diesels as they tend to have a bigger build up of carbon/soot because of the diesel.

He said it cleans most of the engine, he said he has people ringing them thinking they've got allsorts of different problems but then they have this done and then the car runs fine as it's been cleaned out.

I must admit I didn't have it done because I thought something were wrong I were just intrigued as I saw all the good reviews and I thought for £99 it's not the end of the world if it doesn't do much but it's miles better to drive now it's been done.

Sounds promising! I had engine cleaner ran through a bit ago but I can see that this is a lot different, I shall have a look into this to see if it will clean out a coked up Intake manifold!

Obviously I can't say for certain but Im sure it will do as That is what it's aimed at and I read loads of reviews about it before having it done.

I read one review where he scanned the car before starting and it said there was an injector fault so he told the customer that it wouldn't make a difference and that there were no point in having it done. They seem to know their stuff.

I had mine done a few weeks ago. It cleans the turbo, injectors, injector tips and I think the inlet manifold.

I shall find one local and have a chat to see if it does! Otherwise it's a I let manifold off and clean jobby

Yeah it does clean that aswell, website is enginecarbonclean.com it says it all on there.

£99 is decent, that's half the price I've been reading elsewhere on here. After seeing what a difference it makes to our engines due to them being direct injection, then I'm definitely looking to having this done as my S3 is at 52K now and doubt it's been done before.

Mine were on 60k when I had mine done and as I say I could tell a difference straight away

Cool that's good to know and for only £99 you can't complain, it's the next best method to clean inlet valves after a hands on decoke e.g. walnut blasting.

How does the carbon cleaning work? I assume something is sprayed into the air intake to break down carbon deposits? Wondering how effective this would actually be on our engines...the only proper way to decoke these is a manifold off job with walnut blasting + a lot of elbow grease!

It's meant to be a high octane negatively charged fuel that removes it, I would love to see some before and after pics of the intake too with this method!

How does the carbon cleaning work?

Taken from enginecarbonclean:

The Engine Carbon Clean unit is connected to the engine’s air intake pipe, turning tap water into hydrogen molecules which is injected while the engine runs for approx. 30 minutes, this cleans the entire inlet system, cylinder head and exhaust manifold without any interference or damage to the engine.

I would love to see some before and after pics of the intake too with this method!

Same, you can see carbon deposits being blown out of the exhaust pipe in videos, however pictures of the inlet would be good to see as the after effects of walnut blasting are highly visible.

Back in the old days all engines required a de-coke every 40k. miles or so. It was a head and manifolds off and lots of scrubbing to remove the carbon deposits (ask yer dads). Seems we have gone backwards with newer Audi engines, as the fuels have definitely improved.

Brilliant write up that is, exactly what I was trying to say at the start of this thread haha.. No seriously though that is spot on as to what results I've seen on mine

I'm the middle of booking my car in for a carbon clean, this is using hydrogen, is terraclean better? The only bad thing about terraclean is that it won't clean the intake manifold but the hydrogen won't clean injectors :/ I can't see hydrogen being as good as a liquid.... Is this me just being naive?

people have been doing this carbon cleaning for years albeit home diy jobs , basically you get the engine hot then pour small amounts of water into the intake whilst keeping the engine revs up t stop it stalling ,they say that as the water enters the engine it steams and expands rapidly thus removing the carbon deposits from around the valves ,piston crowns etc .
i reckon £99 for a cup of water pouring down the inlet ,through a fancy machine is expensive to say the least . your obviously going to see some deposits coming out of the exhaust as that's where the water will be washing the soot from .

You make it sound like I've been bent over now! £80 is going to be great for me as long as it works! Just hoping it actually makes a difference to the car otherwise it's a waste! But yes your right it is steep considering what there doing

It's a bit severe trying to do this on a modern engine, was ok on a an old cast iron jobbie but not thesedays. I assume the modern method of trickling in water at a controlled rate is a better method.

there still doing it on the pd engines etc. bent rods if your not careful . but its only like wmi injection on petrols

Ok so there were quite a few reasons why I did this option..

1. At £99 maybe a bit expensive but I could afford it (we have no kids)
2. It's convenient, the company came to me at a time to suit and it didn't take long at all. Although I do like messing around with cars on the tools etc I'd prefer on my days off not to be stripping the engine down just to clean it out.
3. I looked into it before I booked it and found no negative reviews at all on any websites/social media, only people that had seen improved performance and better running cars so it seemed like a tried and tested method that works and cleans multiple engine components.
4. I had seen somewhere before the method of someone(which would be me) putting water through the intake but for a car I paid nearly £13000 for when I got it (nearly 5 year ago) that was definitely not going to happen ever.

Overall I'm happy with it, it did what I was hoping for and the car runs a lot better.

The only thing that I do wish is that I could have seen what it did actually do inside the engine so maybe a before and after picture/video, but having not had this I suppose only time will tell how good it worked but it were about 2/3 month ago now that I had it done and it's still running as sweet as a nut.

Spot on mate, this is exactly why I'll be getting a mobile engine carbon clean done, £99 isn't a shed tonne of money and for the sake of ease, you really can't complain.

Cars booked in for Friday! I shall let you know how it goes
Yes let us know how you get on, be interesting to hear what someone else thinks after getting it done especially on a petrol engine. Did you ask them if it should clear out your intake manifold?

I shall give it a review next week, driving over to Doncaster on Sunday for elsecar VAG show over the snake pass so there's no better place to test it! Yes hydrogen cleaning is through your intake so it cleans it through! It's terraclean that won't touch the intake so I'm happy with this choice! Exited to see the improvement hope I'm not disappointed!

Ahh that's near me. my cousin is going I think, it's not as far as Doncaster though, elsecar is in Barnsley. Perfect opportunity to try it out then.
If you've got excess carbon to be removed though you should feel the difference straight away more or less, it's just a smoother ride and you can feel it pulling better.

It's at Doncaster race course mate! You should pop down I've heard it's a good show from my brother, I've never been like! Hope it's a nice day to drive over

Right that makes a bit more sense now as elsecar is only a small village so I did wonder where they would put it haha. It should be decent if it's at the racecourse they don't tend to have any odd show there only the decent ones normally

I'm guessing it originated from there then! Should be a good show I hope, hope my car will be in a state to actually show it one day!

My results:
- Engine noise changed from the typical tappetty TFSI and (what I can only describe as) booming sounds, to a more crisp-sounding engine with the signature TFSI sounds present, with lower overall noise volume

That is exactly how I would describe my S3's current engine noise, my mate mentioned it before but I took no notice of it, however the other day I left the engine running and opened the bonnet to this horrible sound! I was actually concerned but then I remembered your post describing the tappetty TFSI noise, plus it's been to my brothers garage a couple of times as well as a VAG specialist recently so I presume it's ok. Want to get my S3 carbon cleaned asap though to see if this removes the awful sound like it did for you.

Sounds good, let us know how you get on mate, I'm going to get mine done next month hopefully.

I'll be getting this done thanks for recommending.

Iv had mine done this afternoon a 2010 mapped Quattro with 70k on the clock by Simon, he was a very knowledgeable bloke who also owns an 8p
Time will tell however on my first spirited run the engine is definitely quieter and feels more responsive. He did a dpf scan and provided some advice, which in my case was "like driving fast? As you've next to no build up
Says he's considering going to elsacar at the races on Sunday.
All in all for the money I'd recommend using Simons service

Another good review! Simon passed me onto the right man to speak to, looking forward to getting mine done tomorrow hoping it will make it a little more responsive as I feel like my car is a little laggy

Be interested to hear how you get on, my cars very much the same.

Will do buddy, funds are pretty tight at the moment and I'm going away on holiday in May, however I am keen to get this done asap so will hopefully do it after April's payday.

In the meantime after doing a bit of research, posts 5 and 9 are an interesting read on the following thread http://www.audi-sport.net/xf/threads/ticking-tapping-noise-s3-tfsi.250123/. The cam chain tensioner is a well known issue with the S3's and I don't think mines been done, if left it can be a costly repair so I'm going to get this and the chain done next Friday.
