Hi all

Thought id pop over here and see if any of you guys can offer me some advice on common faults, things to look for etc when buying a A4 avant between the years 2010-2013.

Im looking for a Black edition, so has all the kit etc and looks pretty stylish. Looking to spend between 10-15k. Will be a diesel. More than likely a 140bhp model as looks like the 170models are pretty hard to come by.

What are the things to look for/check? Do the 2.0TDI engines still have the issues with the injectors and cam follower wearing as I know the mk5 golf had issues with this...also the 170bhp turbos were like chocolate.

Ideally wanting a one with heated seats, if I cant find a model with them...are they possible to retrofit etc?

Realistic MPG out of them?

Thanks and hope you have some spare time to help a fellow vag owner out (i have a mk4 golf track car :D) Just need a sensible daily for work.

Chris

I bought a 2011 A4 B8 170bhp about a year ago 17k
No obvious problems.
Should already come with heated seats and nav on the black edition.

Thanks. How you find it to drive?

Hows the fuel consumption?

Interesting to know the black edition should come with heated seats from the factory.

Heated seats isn't standard, even on the black edition. This is Audi, you're lucky they come with seats as standard!

Thought as much. I was sure I had seen pics of some interiors without the buttons for them.

Is there anything major such as engine issues, turbo, sensors, camshafts etc that I need to look out for? Having looked at a few TSB's and other threads issues seem to be excessive oil consumption on the TFSI engines, a low speed shudder due to a faulty power steering return pipe and a sunroof air deflector causing loud air noise.

Not really. Some horror stories about S-Tronic boxes but hard to tell if the issues are really that widespread, particularly on the newer iterations.

From what I've read the mpg on these is a little disappointing with the 2.0 and 1.8 TFSI's delivering almost the same MPG.

I have a 2010 143 and overall consumption is around 43 mpg.
On a good long run I almost get to 50 but realistically my every day run to head office is 40 this time of year.
I don't kick the crap out of it everywhere but don't like to hang around.
I had a 170 B7 before and that was horrible for fuel and i would guess the B8 170 would be the same. I get more miles from a 60 litre tank now than I did in that and it had a 70 litre tank!
The 19" wheels on the BE will cost you around 4 or 5 mpg over the 18's - at least that's what I get with my winter wheels (but not winter tyres this year).
Had the clutch replaced (noisy) at around 90k and rear shocks at 105k (I do carry around 60kg of gear when I'm out and about) otherwise it's been rock solid and still feels tight with no rattles etc.

I have had a couple.
Budget £50 a year for Xenon headlight bulbs.
Also front wheel bearings at 60,000 miles.

Great cars, I like the multitronic, have had 2 and they are smooth, quiet and 45 mpg on a 30 mile commute.

Reversing lights are poor, but with the auto you can left foot brake to give loads more light.

Do it, love mine so far! currently getting around 52-54mpg, but I only tend to drive long distances on motorways/dual carriageways atm

Cheers lads.

Spoke to a few and heard a couple issues with the inlet manifold flap motor dying and the DPF's...but since I drive 75mile for work each day over varied roads and enjoy the occasional foot down moment that should be alright....not to mention fact just as easy to remove them if required.

Even had a look at the VCDS tricks thread and seems like you can do one or 2 pretty nifty things with them.

Now to just find a white 'Black edition' with heated seats(preferred) for between 10-15k that has been well looked after. They seem a pretty rare one to come by up here in the North East.

Bringing this back up again.

Looked at a couple today. 63 daytona grey black edition and a white 177 quattro black edition...slightly older on a 12 plate.

The earlier model the white quattro was a lot better bodywork, although it looked like they had done a few smart repairs from the little bits of overspray about.

What are the quattro models like? any common issues with them?

Rear fog lights are always good for reversing in dark areas

Chris I've just got a black edition saloon unfortunately with no heated seats couldn't find many about. Brilliant motor so far (came from owning bmw's) I live in Teesside where abouts are you in the north east?

Bishop Auckland dude.

Its sooo hard to find one with heated seats...considering they the top of the range, you would expect more models to have them.

How you finding your black edition?

Coming from a bmw e90 3 series m sport. Million miles better definitely the best car I've ever had. Drives brilliant. Spec wise I found audi's more expensive than bmw. But this beats my bmw hands down.

Awesome. Whats the MPG like in it daily around the doors?

Can't really comment yet Chris only had it since Thursday but it's had its first long run up to Isle of skye. Again couldn't fault it just wants to pull and pull.

This is what bought

Pleasure to drive.
Like you coming from my full leather/heated seats bmw with nav I wanted the same in the audi. But full leather imo doesn't look as nice in the audi and also because it's half leather heated seats weren't a deal breaker for me as I don't think you feel the cold in the seats with it having cloth base. The loss of nav I can deal with but it's got DAB radio

Cleaning cloth seats isn't that hard either, small hand interior brush and interior cleaner spray it on quick go over with brush wipe clean with microfiber cloth like brand new.

Theres just something about the white Audi's that looks far better than any other car out there.

I always thought the nav was a standard option in the s-line/black edition models. The ones I looked at today all had it.

I agree and think the 1/2 leather looks better than the full leather you typically find in the S-line models.

However, I like the flat bottomed steering wheel of the black edition, and also the black detailing around the outside, not to mention the wheels look a hundred times better than the 18s.

Im proper anal about the look, probably too much I forget that the cars im looking at are near 3-4 year old so going to have a odd chip or scratch on them. The one I looked at today was a 12 plate (march 2012), 177PS Quattro in Ibis white, same as yours. 23,500 miles on it which works out at a average of 6000/year tops. Had new front discs and pads, wheels all looked to have been refurbed due to new weights all round and interior (from outside) looked in great shape, no wear to the leather bolsters.
Few minor points are that the front bumper had been painted, and they had left a few dots of overspray on the black grille and against the lower black grilles, which stood out a mile once you had noticed it once. Small chip and dent in the front edge of the rear passenger quarter, tiny scratch on the lower bodykit along the sill. Rear bootlid had a lacquer run in aswell, so thats obvilously been painted at some point aswell as the bumper as the odd bit overspray on that aswell. But nothing they wouldnt be sorting out if I was to get the car. All minor things really but things you would expect to be not presented on a 18k motor.

Ouch 18k and them issues I'd of taken big steps in the opposite direction.

All the black edition saloons I looked at didn't have heated seats or nav so think you've been lucky.

Mines a 13 plate 19500miles 18k but immaculate. Would of walked away if it wasn't. All the cars I've had have been in that condition. And I've kept them that way. Regularly clean them atleast once a week if not twice. Snowfoamed, polished and waxed the lot.

Understand what you are saying about little minor points but they all add up and if it were me it would drive me insane.

The daytona grey one up at sunderland was in worse condition, and it was more money!.

One of the lower edges on the bumper had been hit into a kerb and had dented it (the bits that point out a bit), and had been re-lacquered/painted over....keen eye to notice, but it was there. Noticable amount of stone chips on the bonnet, odd scratch on the rear bumper where stuff had been put into the boot and a small scuff on the off side quarter. Not to mention the leather outer bolsters has wrinkled a lot more. And that was 1k more expensive.

Never going to be a new car...but aslong as its only 1 or 2 minor things then i can live with it. Ive got a 2003 golf track car ive built up from a bare shell, painted etc (was badly damaged in a hail storm last year) and theres still bits on that that aint perfect.

Thats what i went to look at today at Teesside.

Got locked in the site as they put the bollards up without checking everyone out...but luckily one was unlocked so managed to squeeze through and get out hahaaha. What a numpty security gaurd!
Kid you not I went to look at that same car on Monday. But needing better fuel efficiency left it. Only had a quick glance over as it was ******* down.

Haha, Hopefully the MPG on it will be well into the 40s...which is good enough for me as travel 50miles round trip for work each day.

Are these permanent 4wd or the haldex system like the mk4 golf/S3/TT set up was?

I bought a 2012 a4 avant black edtion in White 17k full Audi history etc 2.0tdi 140 I do 34 miles a day for work I get 42-45 mpg get around 540 miles to a tank of fuel, even done the full tank get to half and top up again and done the maths wasn't far out

Mines a auto so might use a little more fuel but I knock it down gears when it puts it in to the higher gears to quick eg 6th at 30 mph I will drop it to 4 or 5 th depending on the revs

Probably will. But we all know quoted figures are no where near as realistic as the real life ones

Yeah true.

What's the timing belt intervals on these engines? Still the normal 60,0000 or 4 years whichever sooner?

Also what's the haldex service intervals and rough cost of the parts?

Car in link above has had 2 previous owners

Thanks

If you use the search box you'll find a number of threads on the 177 mpg. The general answer is "not as good as people hoped". :)

Had a search and a lot of varying results on them. Some say low 30s and some say they can get into the 40s. Which is very interesting.

I do a 25 mile (each way) to work drive each day, consisting of mainly A road driving and about 10mile motorway driving which is all pretty well flowing with limited stopping.

Also read a lot of people claim their DIS computer is out.

Anyone know what the belt change intervals are? Cant seem to find anything online.

I have a 2.0 tdi

I believe that the timing belt needs changing at around the 50K mark. Mine was around the 50k mark when I bought mine, searched online and I'm sure I found that it needed changing. I insisted that the Audi dealer I used changed it and provided proof before I bought it, which they did.

I'm sure someone will be able to tell you definitely

If it's the same as the wife's a3 iirc it was 5yr or 70k, can't check in my service book for the a4 at the mo as I'm out but as soon as I get in I'll look.
