Is S3 standard suspension really that bad?

Various different options on suspension setups, anti roll bars work very well...

If you need any advise or prices please get in contact :)

Finaly got my coilover kit fitted this week after first trying to do it myself and failing miserably due to a combination of bad weather, lack of available time and a a couple of seized bolts (which snapped when being done by the mechanic anyway). I decided to go for ST X Coilover Suspension Kit, supplied by @DPM . My decision was mainly driven by cost, desire to keep as much comfort as possible while lowering the front of the car to be in line with rear and to improve on the standard S3 damping/roll, which is very bad for a car of this caliber - as many here will testify. I have no plans on doing track days at this time, not did I want the car lowered as much as possible. Although from what I understnad, this kit will go very low at the expence of comfort and clearance. I didn't need lots of adjustability due to how I plan to use the car - being able to adjust ride-height was the only thing that I wanted.

According to my limited research ST X is made by KW and ST is their mid-range brand, with AP being the budget range, with KW being the best of breed. St X shares much of its internals with KW v1, but costs less due to cheaper materials elsewhere. The ST brand effectively replaced Weitec range, which is what I wanted to get originally.

Anyway, I picked up the car from the garage today and spent just over an hour driving at various speeds on a combination of motorway, bumpy back roads and somewhere in between. Initial impressions are very, very good! I was very surprised by its ability to absorb bumps and potholes, while improving on the feel/communication through the steering and my 'butt' :) Turn-in feels much more direct and precise with much less understeer - these improvements might be more down to improved tracking and new standard topmounts though, so take this with a pinch of salt. The main thing is that the bouncy ride is pretty mcuh gone - car feels very planted and seems to hold the road very well mid-corner, even on a very wet day like today.

In summary, I'm really chuffed with my choice so far. The original aims of having a comfortable ride while improving handling and lowering it slightly have been achieved. I can't comment on build quality yet and I guess things will take a bit of time to settle - time will tell. So far though, very impressed and would recommend this kit to anyone looking to have flexibility in ride height while improving handling and comfort of the stock suspension.

I'll post up a pic of how the car looks now once the rain stops :)

Decent suspension upgrades really transform this car.

As you know, from stock it's wobbly, poorly damped, and understeers like mad,and if you increase the power, this is only made worse.
The ARBs are probably the biggest part of that, but the coilovers add control over bumps which the stock stuff just doesnt have.

Yes, ARB upgrade is not too far off I think. Car still rolls a little too much for my liking, but it is much better with the kit fitted. I'll probably look to do them closer to summer once I figure out how much I want to change.

Here is the car when I bought it last autumn:

Here is how it sits now:

That sounds and looks like a promising bit of kit,how much was it Leshkin?

Yes, it feels very nice indeed - the S3 should have come like this from factory. I certainly enjoyed testing things out today and can't really describe all that well how much of an improvement over OEM this is.

DPM supply it for £720 and Awesome GTI do it slightly cheaper at the moment, but if you speak to Damian about their price promise, I'm sure he'll sort you out ;)

Leshkin may I ask if these coilovers are more comfortable than the stock shocks/springs?

I was planning to lower the front a bit by doing the eibach pro-kit springs. But seems like the ST kit is a better choice

Yes, yes and very much yes! I've spent all day today just finding a reason to drive it. Much more comfortable, but with better handling. Its hard to describe - you feel the bumps, but its a case of you knowing that they are there without the crashing or jarring that was common with OEM setup.

As I said before, one of my primary objectives was to have a more comfortable ride - this kit does that and more :) I assume that if you slam the car to the floor, the ride will suffer, but the height I have it at allows for very comfortable sporty ride. Depending on your milage, consider getting top mounts replaced at the same time.

Just to add - I can't really make a direct comparison to Eibach kit, but unless you change the shocks too, I don't see things being any better in terms if comfort. The way I see it, stock damping is the main issue and just replacing the springs will not have a huge impact on that unless the lower front preloads the stock shocks and makes them better.

I understand that quote Leshkin... :icon thumright:
I went out to my local garage to work on my TDI and while I was there, took the wheels off my 3.2 to have them balanced.
Under the wheel arches was a nice set of Weitec Ultra GT Coilovers. (Green springs gave it away).

I knew the car handled well and had none of the understeer issues documented on here for 3.2's, but this was the first opportunity to get in about for a good look.
My advice to anyone thinking about coilovers is do it. The ride is luxurious and the handling is sharp.

(Even with half a Spitfire engine in it)...!

Nice surprise for an otherwise dull Saturday.

Thanks guys! I think am sold.
But am not sure how your roads compare to ours (****** roads) loads of surprises

I'd say that roads in London and surrounding areas are not great, but I've seen worse :) If you have standard suspension at the moment, I seriously doubt this kit will make it any worse at the same height I have my set. Granted, my OEM suspension might have been a little worse for wear, but the new stuff seems to deal with the same bumps much better. I've actually stopped stressing about some of the smaller potholes as much - it just deals with them.

Just noticed that my adaptive headlights are not working - sounds like lowering of the car resulted in the sensors going wonky or something being not right with the way they were reconnected. This modding business never ends eh? :)

Google to the rescue, unless anyone one here knows what's going-on :readit:

I had an Autel scanner on my one today and noticed a menu for xenon adjustment. You are a VCDS owner, so there should be some better avenues on there to sort that out...?

We have shocking roads in the North of Scotland and only one pot hole, so far, has nearly rattled my teeth out, the car/suspension/wheels, all survived ok. I wouldn't let that worry you too much.

I've gone from AP Coilovers to Bilstein B14 and the ride is a lot stiffer and more stable imo! I much prefer it!
If you want a soft ride then AP are definately that and they go quite low.

Yup, already scanned it and found this error:

I'm going to try to go through the headlights adaptation/realignment procedure and see if that sorts things out: http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/VW_Golf_(1K)_Headlight_Aim_Control_(Xenon_with_AFS)

Headlight leveling system is now sorted with a small tweak to the vertical headlight adjustment screw to adjust for lowered suspension. No errors so far and AFS working :arco:

Guys sorry for sounding like a complete noob. But how can I find out whats my car axle load?

It's dangerous to assume but, I assume that the fairly minimal difference is that between a Sportback and 3 door....?
It's not the difference between a 3.2 and a 2.0L, that's about 100kg.....?

Don't forget DSG/manual and Quattro/2WD. A Quattro DSG will be heavier than a 2WD manual, hence the difference in weights. Oh, and your axle loads are detailed in the last few pages of your car's handbook. ;)

Sorry for the thread revival Leshkin. But i would like to know when fitting the rear coilovers do we have to remove any of the interior trim to be able to access the rear shocks? or its all done from underneath the car

Thanks bro

No problem Mario! While I didn't do the install myself, I'm pretty confident that it's all done from the underside of the car.

This video has a good guide on how to do this:

Thank you brothers

One last thing. Hows the ST shock body looks by now?

They look OK, but very dirty at the moment - the anodised finish seems to have stood up to the elements over the last year. If I get a chance I'll snap some photos for you.

Thanks Leshkin. As I am considering the ST's not sure if spending extra 100 on the KW V1 justify the outer shock material
