Hi all.

Please bear with me, I've just installed first second ever radio in nearly 10 years haha, always just kept the standard systems but decided I wanted a sat nav blah blah.

So I've bought this;

So quite daunted by the shear among by of connections I though sod it just give it ago.
All has gone quite well but I have a few questions and issues.

Upon taking out the standard symphony front loading 6cd stereo I am now left with these 2 connections;

Any ideas what they are?

So the issues I've got;

1. Radio reception is pretty ******, any ideas? I'm sure it's all together correctly!
2. The rear speakers work but the sound seems poor compared to when I had the standard headunit in!
3. The headunit didn't come with any gps maps installed which really ****** me off, anyway what apps the best to get for offline sat nav?

Thanks guys, sorry if I'm coming across as slack, like I say I've always been into the mechanical side but now slowly venturing into the entertainment side of matters and think I've took too big of a job do my first go haha.

The round connector with a pin in the middle is antena you may need a adaptor if there is a hole roughly the same size going into the hu

Argh is that what it is. 2005 b7 shape.

The lead in the middle just to the right with the green plug has a radio input which I've plugged into the HU then onto the end of the green plug I've pushed a yellow adaptor into it that was into the original oem HU. That make sense? There was no place for the black plug to go.

Well you will need to get that attached and it's powered off the harness so you will need to power it up

Any ideas what adaptor I'll need as when I ask the eBay seller they said I should have everything I needed.

Not to sure to be honest as mine is a b5 and I have never heard of the make of your hu usually you get a connector then have to connect to your loom

They both look like the same thing mate!

Also if I fit them how will I attach the blue wire from the wiring harness on the right.

Hello Dani, I have a Xtrons head unit, the same than yours, but for an audi a3 8p 2007. The connexions you made are right, green plug with the yellow adaptor that was into the original oem head unit, but I don't have an extra black plug, but I think you don't need it. The only thing you need is to power it up with a +12V source. My radio reception is quite nice, but a little worst than the original one. Searching in Xtrons forum I found out that It is better to power up the radio amps with the ACC red cable, because is a more stable signal. Hope I've helped you.

Also the yellow cable on the right here:

Anyone know what it is? I've connected it onto the green block on the above cable.

So On the picture that has all the wires on the floor, the on to the right with the green block that has the radio antenna plug at the top of it, that is plugged into the antenna part of the xtron a headunit then I have the above yellow plug, plugged into the green connector block which leaves the port to the side free and it also leaves me with the black cable in the first picture floating around.

Does that make more sense?

What adaptor won't work for me John, I already have the 2 green connections but they are as 1 block.

Right so after a hour of Google I've figured what he black and yellow connections are, the yellow one is a FAKRA connection and the black is a coax one, both are part of the aerial system and help to offer optimal signal performance.
So from what I gather not a lot of people refit both to aftermarket HU and I'm guessing that's due to the lack of asaptors, most seem to just use the black coax one.

So should I buy the above adaptor and fit both aerials or just go for the coax one?

One will be the adapter for the black round aerial lead you have and the other will allow you to run the fakra and the other aerial you have.

Right I think I get you, so the first item you've linked would connect into the black aerial coax then into the splitter you've posted then I'd take my powered fakra connection and place that into the other splinter?

Is that right mate?

The adapter I listed has power to it, this will provide power to the aerial amplifier board in the back of your car!
My picture shows the different adapters to get you from ISO to thakra

That's it but like John77 said his FAKRA might be better than the one supplied

So do away with trying to use the coax aerial?

As said I do have the supplied fakra adaptor fitted that has a 12v feed going to it but the signal ain't great.

Keeping locked on this Dani_B19.

Ive been eyeing up the exact same for my B6 Cab on Ebay.

Hope it goes well.

I had the xtrons unit, I had to send it back, kept crashing & the DIS in the dash never worked, even though it had the can box with the unit.

Ah darn it! Do you think it was simply a 'dud' unit? Im a fan of cheaper Chinese sh*t but obviously not if it doesnt work properly.

Do you mean, hooking the unit up with the DIS, as in..

radio stations/track numbers appearing on the DIS ?

Thanks for the feedback

Yes, the station/cd info never showed up in the dash display. Also the unit locked up meaning I was forever pressing the reset & setting it all up again, I then bought a sonic unit which is now for sale on ebay as I have sold my A4.

Thanks,

Its a shame really, as I thought the specs of the Xtrons unit was quite comprehensive.

Which unit do you have John? Happy with it?

Dan.

I bought a sonic unit worked great, I installed an external aerial so I could add a DAB receiver.
Take a look on ebay the units on there as I sold the car. Cost me £319, looking to get back £180.

Thanks John,

Yes I also eyed up the Sonic unit which looks good.

Just need some review into this before I put my money where my mouth is.

Sorry for the thread Hijack

Forgot to update this.

So it took so ****** doing to get the radio to work. The above parts on their own didn't rectify the aerial issue. I had to use the above parts then use the following going into the splitter:

Image

Although I only used this to get the aerial working which it did, I then ordered the exact ones of eBay for £7 so less than one of the adaptors above and the reception was even better than the halfords ones.

So the reception is 95% as good as it was with the oem HU.

Danny for the money, the HU cost me £260 in the end it's a tie bargain, the oem steering wheel controls work even better, you can skip through radio, sat nav, BT etc, radio info etc displays on the DIS, each memory card slot will take upto 32gb SD card. The oem Bluetooth works perfectly with the HU.

Thanks Daniel,
Do you mean the Xtrons unit you have yes?
I have a B6 with no steering wheel controls but this is definitely something to bear in mind as I am getting a flat bottom steering wheel soon. (with controls)

:)
