Alfie the a4's build thread.

Strange but I can't find any downpipe for the tfsi. Wonder whyb034 don't do one to match the cat?

I wish they did, mainly because the difference in pipe diameter between the sports cat and downpipe is hilarious. My downpipe is also looking a little worse for wear.

Well the boots decided to not work again, didn't get chance to strip it down due to the weather but starting to get really peed off with it now.

So these turned up over the last few days. Anyone take a guess what I'm upto?

well i could take a guess but it would be way off topic chap.....lol, but seriously something fast and turbo orientated.

Fitted this today:

Made a nice little difference to the overall drive of the car.

Also ****** just over £30 up the wall, the picture of the above pipes was to fashion my own air intake pipe and it didn't go to plan. Ooh well.

Good spot mate but I want a sports cat. Done the decat route before and hate having to find a friendly moter.

i been offer to have mine cut open and re sealed back up so looks like the cat no mot problem there same as cutting out dpf

Are you going for the 034 Motorsport Cat Dani?

Either that Baka or I'll get a custom one made when I have the exhaust done.

Cool, be good to hear what difference it makes, I'm considering getting a sports cat. :)

So not really had chance to update this, been busy between been made redundant (right laugh when the Mrs is about to drop any day), selling off the excess stock from when I had my old s3 and playing with the a4.

So what I have been doing I hear you say, well:

Bought and fitted this;

So it's jam packed with some amazing features and for the money it really is a true bargain, the additional cables also look almost like they should be there, nice little hole where the multi changer normally goes so just cut a little tab out and fed the cables through.

So the unit isn't without its issues.

It didn't come with any GPS software, managed to solve this by copy the IGO software from the the other half a Leon that has a similar HU which did come with GpS software.

The radio reception is crap, like really bad, they've sent the adaptor that's in one of the pictures above, has the dual fakra green connection in, not sure if you guys are the same but my a4 has a single fakra connection and a coax connection for both aerials. So currently trying to get this solved.

The rear speaker sound isn't the best, the power is there but the sound output is Hal's what it was with the standard HU, not sure if this is due to the sound software of some bring hardware related.

Also just looking into what this red connection block is that went into the standard HU.

Also bought and fitted a full set of team help wind deflectors, they look that good that when my mate came down the other with his special eddy a4 Quattro he ended up ores ring some there and then haha.

Really easy to fit and look good, been lost not having them fitted, had them in the s3 and the Leon.

So after the disaster that was me trying to make my own TIP I came across Euan selling his 034 Motorsport TIp and for the price it was a true bargain.

Have a little clean up and remove a oily residue from inside, just need to fit it.

These are after a clean, I do has some before photos but tbh it wasn't that dirty but I'm a little OCD so has to clean it haha.

Btw Carl I found out what the red block was for, turns out to be sat nav related which is weird as I don't have sat nav, or didn't should I should.

Forgot to add the headunit was up for £280, managed to get it for £270, with the issues with the aerial reception etc the seller has refunded me £27 which is a bonus. Also bought these to compliment the unit and also sort out the radio reception.

So hopefully the radio will be sorted with those 2 bits.

So for £260 in total I have a all singing and dancing head unit that will be able to display the torque real time all along a few thousand songs haha.

So I had a busy hour this afternoon while the Mrs took a pregnancy nap.

Been down to Halfords earlier and bought these to try and fix the radio issue:

So this is what I ended up with:

So I binned off the double fakra adaptor that can with the HU and went with all the above, I'm happy to say the signal is 100% better than before, BUT it's still it oem quality, it's 95% there and I think that's the best I'm going to get, I believe it's a issue with the HU as I say the oem radio had amazing reception and I just don't think I'm going to replicate that which I've come to accept but for the features the android HU offers its a small sacrifice.

Anyway in going to order the above asaptors off eBay as they cost £4 each and look identical so may as well save myself a few quid.

So on a role I decide to for the 034 Motorsport TIP.

This was a 2 minute job:

If it takes you more than 5 minutes then hang your head in shame.

So is it worth the money, for the £40 I paid yes, the turbo spools up quicker, the delivery is smoother and the car is definitely more urgent and certainly pulls better so for £40 it's a bargain, would I pay £65 which is the price new, probably yes.

While I was sitting the TIP and the Mrs was till asleep I had 10 minutes spare so have the engine bay a quick clean, and I mean quick, this was with AB jaffa clean, a detailing brush and 3 MF cloths, like I say his was just a 10 minute job is but my god I was impressed:

Like I say that was After 10 minutes, I'm going to do a full degrease and steam clean in the next few weeks so can't wait to see the results after that.

Also when the eBay radio antenna asaptors turn up I'm going to remove the drivers lower dash and route all the wires better as its like spagehttie junction behind the HU, also going to tape up the power feeds to the antennas to stop them coming lose.

Cheers pal, honestly I was so surprised what it looked like after, the engine was a disgrace and tbh by my standards still is but at least it's now presentable, can't wait to get properly stuck in to it and order all the engine bay covers.

Well I've finally made a effort to sort the boot issue our, booked a auto electrician to come out in Tuesday to hopefully put a earth to the boot and then replace the broken wiring, got to admit it's doing my nut in not been able to use my boot and the dash constantly flashing and beeping saying lights out.

Fingers crossed he suits it out, will also be nice to have a working boot light too.

So I finally have a working boot , can't tell you how much you take a boot for granted.

So after having to cancel on the guy yesterday due to a last minute hospital visit we rearranged for today.

So Richard turned up and straight away said please tell me the rear seats fold down, funnily enough I said it was one of the requirements on my spec list, so his face lit up, we dropped the seats and he removed the boot lid trim from the top and managed to get a earth onto the fog light cable.
Within 5 minutes the boot was opened, 2 minutes later and we discover this:

Image

Image

The earth wire was snapped at the top and bottom, forgot to get photo of that, so that'll explain the boot not opening and no lights.

30 minutes later and we had this:

Image

Image

Rich wired in a longer piece of wire and also made sure it was a bit more heavy duty.

Job done, gave him £40 which for a working boot and something that I was struggling to do is a bargain. It's so nice to not have the dash light up and beep at me and also amazing to have a boot back haha, nice too that the boot interior light works haha.

On another not these turned up today:

These are the eBay aerial leads, less than £6 for both haha, that's less than one of the halfords leads, weather permitting I'll be fitting them tomorrow and takin the halford ones back, also going to remove the lower drivers dash to pull he cables into the cavity to neaten the area behind the radio up.

Fingers crossed the quality of them is as good as the halfords but saying that the reception still isn't brilliant in any sort of built up areas.

Well I fitted the eBay antenna asaptors today, bargain for less than £6 for the 2, also removed the lower drivers dash to pull the cables from the HU into the cavity to neaten it all up behind there, radio now sits flush again and I'm pretty sure the radio reception is even better than what it was with the halfords leads, time will tell but anyway I'm happy as I'm £19 up and have a working radio.

That's a big saving that and glad it's better than with the Halfrauds leads.

Is the reception still not as good as the OEM though?

Not half mate, its disgusting what halfords charge just for convienience.

No mate, still not as good as OEM, I believe it's due to the HU itself, I know for a fact the antennas are now setup correctly, so the fault lies within the HU.

Forgot to add the first mod I did haha, this is the cargo net out of my s3, bought a pack of 3 and gave 1 to mi mam and then never used the spare small one, that is until now, the big net was fitted in day 1 were as I've just fitted the small one today.

Well it's steady away at the minute.

Managed to finally remove the NS number plate light screw, thank god.

Received some number plate LEDs from Drstarnage, top man, thanks again pal, unfortunately Royal Mail decided to open the package to inspect it and at the same time totally destroy one of the LED's, shame really as the other working one works great with the cars can bus system but with only one working it looked daft so I've removed it until I get my kufatec rear resistor that could be a while though as in locked in a eBay/PayPal battle after their systems went down in me Thursday night with the 20% voucher.

Anyway the number plate light screw ended up coming out win a dremel and a 3mm steel bit.

Image
Image

Image

So the only things left on my original list to sort are:

Drill and tap number plate screws
Pair spare remote to car

The first one is sorted shortly, mate of mine has a tap and die kit so he's sorting that.

Just leaves the spare remote to sync back upto the car, got a feeling that one is goin. To cost me as no matter what I try nothing works.

So today's work.

While the better half was sleeping off last nights round of pre labour contractions I on the other hand needed to do something to pick me up after having only 3 hours sleep.

So I picked a fairly good condition plenum and battery cover off focusy off here, funnily enough he lives 2 minutes walk from me, small world. Anyway if cleaned and prepped it the night before so just needed to fit it today, here's the pics of everything before and after, unfortunately the rubber deal he'd have me (was off a b6) was slightly different to my own so I just took mine off and cleaned it up.

While I was at it I also fitted the old coolant and washer cap off my s3, unfortunately the Porsche oil one doesn't fit, the body isn't tall enough :(.

So everything was treated to a clean with a home made APC and then lavish amounts of this applied, love this stuff, it's just so versatile, use it for all sorts.

And a couple of shots of it all together
