As many audis my front bumper has peeled its lacquer mentaly on the front bumper and also on the rear bumper.

This is really annoying me now, if i want to get this fixed do i have to get it repainted and re-lacquered or can this just be wet flated, polished and then re-lacquered? because i could do the first two stages myself that way?

Would also be interested in this.

Is this kinda thing not covered by Audi under the 12 year guarantee? Could be wrong just flicked through the book.

I've had a look into it and corrosion is 13 years I think and body work like this is only 3 years :/ I'm gutted, car looks a right mess, just had a quote for £250 for full front bumper and rear bumper respray which is pretty decent

Not good, I've taken lacquer off the front bumper of my old car by using the wrong nozzle on a 140bar pressure washer.

Gutting isn't it, seems to be the thing with red paint, going to get it booked it and get it over and done with, it's proper getting on my tits now, making me fall out with my car! I just hope it's only the bumpers that peel :/

Funny enough the car I have the issue with now is red too!

I don't know if it's because of the sun? Red always seems to be affected most... Either way it's really p1ssed me off haha rather be spending this money on a remap instead of paint work!

Totally agree, maybe speak to Audi and see what they have to say?

Mine's the same, I've used clear nail varnish on the lower bits which has stopped it for now.

Mine runs along drivers window, front and rear bumpers and a few other places.

Shocking really and an expensive fix to do all the bits.

should be ok to just flat the area around the clear peeling with 2000 wet and dry ,be careful not to go through feather edge off then scuff all the bumper with large scotch pad ,then re -clear ,as long as you have removed any trace of peel and the white parts were water has gone under then you will be fine , just dont polish it after sanding ,the clear gives it the gloss shine

When is wasn't too bad I was going to 2000 the affected area but it's everywhere now, I've got spray guns and a compressor and lacquer that I can use, I've only ever sprayed wheels but as long as the flows right it's the same I guess! I just want it to be a good job and not to come back, this is where I doubt myself, also getting all the lacquer perfectly off and not taking too much paint off will also be the hard part :/ hate this!

Audi will just 100% fob me off and say it's because of stone chips or paint work that's been done after :/ just gonna pay out and hope it stays looking lovely haha!

if youve done wheels before then you should be able to do the bumpers easily enough ,especially if you have the correct equipment . first coat of clear i would not add any thinners to the clear just the 2k clear and correct amount of hardner , should help eliminate any reacting problems . would do 3 coats and reduce final coat with 20% thinner to get it flowing well. best thing is with 2k is you can easily flat it back to get any orange peel out ,sags, runs etc. then use polisher to bring back the gloss

p.s the red is going to be a p.i.a to match . if you are re-base in it then i suggest you blend it ont the bumber edges where it would meet the bonnet and the wings under the headlights , that way if there is a colour discrepancy it wont show as the areas of the bumper i mentioned should still be the factory colour

Saying this it sounds like an easy job! Not to hard, why wouldn't you thin the clear coat? Would this not be far to thick? Plenty of hardener of course haha!

Matching colour like you say is also a ball ache I guess yes! I know of red cars that are orange under light where they have been re sprayed, I thought about getting another bumper but I could see this issue again with that one :/ the peel is all over the bumper so the edges would have to be took right back too

when you thin the clear if there is any loose edge to the clear still (maybe un noticable ) the thinner will get under it and you will proabably get a feateher edge reaction in that spot . where as without the thinners there no chemical reaction that will occur with the old clear or paint . the clear will be thin enough with just the clear and hardener in it , in this weather i suggest using a fast hardener , set gun to 30 psi at nozzle should be fine and not cause orange peel too much , fan opened up wide . and about a 5" away from the bumper . first coat should just be a quick tack coat , allow ample flash off time in this weather .

p.s forgot to mention sometimes its beneficial to warm the clear up in a bowl of hot water first ,helps it flow better

also usual ratio's manufacturer depending is a 2:1 for clear

My one is probably worse, all the lacquer is off the rear bumper and the front isn't much better.
Audi just laughed at me last year when I mentioned how $hit it looked.
Just going to pay up and get it looking sweet again.

Where are you getting a quote of £250 for front and rear bumper repair?

@hollow thank you for your help with this, you really know what your talking about! I will never no if I don't try I guess mate! If I do brave it then I will get plenty of heat lamps out too!

@Hedski where are you based? Ive had a quote for £250 and a quote for 250/300 off another place, the second place I've had work done before and he is decent and my brother recommended the other, I'm in Manchester

Sounds like a fair price, I wouldn't even attempt to do anything like that myself.

It does sound scary but once you have done it then your set for the future! It's just bad practising on your pride and joy I guess :/ I will need to think about it, and it's how long my cars off the road for my doing this

I thought about doing the wheel arch section of my front wing and corner of my rear bumper myself as a mobile service quote was over 200 and any bodyshop seemed to want over 500. That was London area, car mostly lives in Leamington though...

I've seen people on here have quotes for £200 for one bumper :/ it must just be cheap up here! I'm going to wait until all the grit clears off the road before I do it I think, no point getting fresh paint and it being peppered my stones and salt!

I've had this twice on my 58 plate Misano Red A3. First time they sorted it out under warranty. That was < 3 years from new. They accepted it was a fault and did a respray.
Second time it came back was last year & I just lived with it as I thought age and also 100k+ miles would mean the dealer wouldn't entertain it.
Then (unfortunately, but in the context of this fortunately) I had a front age minor bump which needed the replacement of the front bumper, so it has gone. But I wouldn’t recommend that as the solution!

If they can sort your issues for the prices quoted above then that sounds pretty good!

Misano red is particularly bad at peeling like that. It's a well known fault and the reason I'm not going for a red car again!
It's not covered under Audi's paint warranty either!

Your were lucky! In an unlucky way like haha! It's a ball ache, I'm going to get it sorted when all the salt is off the roads! Just a ball ache

What's the Misano red paint code?

Intrigued as to which red mine is.

My 3 Audis have had peeling lacquer... Their paint is absolute ****!

Unreal isn't it, it really puts be off my car, been looking at s3's and golf R's to change to I will love it again when I get it sorted!

What year is your car jacko?

09 mate... Just lucky a mate owns a body shop.. Was the bonnet and the front wing on my old S3 and the back bumper on this 1.. Both had to be resprayed...

Good prices for you then! I've gone off the idea of doing it myself now really, if I just re lacquer it then it will only come back again! How much did it cost you in the end?
