Basically im looking for opinions on what S3 to get, are the differences big enough to justify the price increase from the 2008 onwards model ?
Ive noticed a lot up for sale bang on 2007 at good prices and then they jump right up in price on anything after a 2007
I personally like the 2008 onwards im just wanting to know your opinions on them thanks

personally i would say go for a facelift sportback. they hold their value well so if you can spend the extra, you can justify it when it comes to selling in the future.

Same here, although I am a bit biased :) I like the look of the facelift, with the DRLs and a slightly more up-to-date feel to the front as well as the side profile of the sportback with shiny roof rails. I wouldn't go as far as justifying spending more on a sportback just on the assumption that they will hold their value better, seeing as 3-door S3s fomr same year tend to be significantly cheaper to start with and are still likely to fetch a decent price down the line. I would say that if you need a decent-sized family car then a sportback is a great option, while a 3-door is a great buy that would leave a bit extra money on the much-needed brake and suspension improvements.

When I started looking I first saw an 07 black 3 door. Then looked into it more and found myself liking the newer lights etc. Then wanted rotors on it so ended up with 60 reg black edition 3 door. I prefer the 3 door over the 5 in terms of looks but that's personal preference (5 door would be more practical though). Only thing I will add is that I went for manual and there's a bit of me wishing id gone for the dsg version.

I have a DSG. It's not an s3 but an a3, wouldn't go back to manual now.

Being a mechanic I don't know if I can trust the dsg box. If anything goes it's going to cost crazy money at least I can rebuild the manual.

I'm thinking 3 door because there far more rare and I like the looks better rear doors are for saloons

You can rebuild the DSG box the same as you can the manual. The only part of the DSG box that is different is the mechatronics unit. Even then, from about 2008/9 onwards they're bullet proof...don't rely solely on internet research.

Do the dsg boxes handle the abuse? I've had no experience with them in the workshop never had much to do with audi let alone any s models.

The thing is---you can't abuse auto boxes, they are automatic and change up and down if they think conditions are right. There are safety switches/sensors to stop abuse and protect itself.

I would agree, they are pretty bullet-proof with the latest models, but if you use launch control continuously then that would likely induce an early failure due to the extra stress on the drive-train.

Buy the best you can afford. Set a budget and hunt high and low for your spec. Personally, I prefer the facelift and the DRL's for me make it look 'current' even though it's not!
