Trying to get to get to the bottom of water in my drivers footwell...

So far I've checked under the scuttle panel, around the fuse/connector box, the grommet for the bonnet release cable, and around the pollen filter area and it all looks dry. I took the wheel arch liner out and poured water down the windscreen (drivers side) and it comes out the bottom of the car, and poured water into the scuttle bottom, so that it exits out the hole going in to the inside of the wing, and it also comes out the bottom. So I've put all that back together..

I've now started pulling the carpet up to see what's going on underneath there and so far what I've found is a red pipe running fore and aft, which has a join initially near the bonnet release lever and then it runs down and aft into a wiring loom after about 20cm. The wiring loom tape is wet! And it's wet following it back for another 20cm or so, until about half way back ref seat position, approx. There is a bracket on the floor of the car there. The loom is then dry.

Could this pipe, not sure what it's for???, be the culprit? (I thought the rear washer pipe ran down the passenger side?) is there a join in amongst the first bit of this loom?

Any other pointers?

My next step is to take the seat out and lift more of the carpet.

As a note, the water seems to be pooling pretty much in the middle of the front footwell...

Any help would be great!

It won't defeat me!!!!!

What a ball ache dude - is the water clear/clean? Could a faulty heater matrix have anything to do with the leak? Do you have a sunroof?

No sunroof, water is clear, no funny taste! I've got the drivers seat out and lifted the carpet, only slightly, but it's pretty wet under there! It isn't getting past the hunt under the seat so is staying in the front footwell.

I think I'm going to have to take out the centre console to properly get the carpet up! What a ball -ache!!

I had a cable the previous owner had ran for a sub punched through the fire wall up front and the grommet was leaking so might be worth chasing that red pipe back and put some sealant around where it enters the car

This is the red pipe in question, it goes through a grommet just in front of the bonnet release handle, along with more wiring, and all looks dry there....

Not sure how the pedal's are fixed in the A3 but if it's a pedal box then there may well be a gasket around the perimeter of the box...if so this could perish over time and let water in....

just a thought I'm definately no ex spurt

Looks like a washer pipe to me. On its way to the rear wiper? Could you get someone to trigger the rear washer whilst you hold the pipe to sense if it feels like the water is moving through it?

Well I've found the cause of my leak, and it was coming in from underneath the car! Tired and knackered bung/grommet. The water was getting in past this and then running from behind the drivers seat and pooling in the front footwell! The sponge on the underside of the carpet was quite wet. I've ordered up some new bungs, and will replace the others on the underside of the car whilst I'm at it!!! Was a fair ball ache getting all the carpet out, to say the least, but it's now out and drying...

Might be worth checking the state of your bungs folks....

The last pic was payment for my efforts! All found under the carpet! Lol

Haha good work chief!! With a little reward also! Are these bungs in the floor pan? I'm trying to work out where they are located?

Yes mate, they are. They are 40mm diameter ones. Going to take some putting back together! But will be good to have it all sorted again!
