Hi All,

I am new to the forum and desperate to find out what is wrong with my beloved A3 S-Line. I bought the car in Sept 2012 and since then I have driven 55,000 miles and had 3 turbos go. The first time was within a year of purchase and the car was under warranty so the garage changed the turbo free of charge. The second time the replacement turbo went again with a year and was still under warranty and so the garage again replaced it under warranty, however, now the turbo has gone again within 18 months. Each time no warning lights come on and the diagnostic investigation did not show up any issues. prior to the turbo going there have been signs such as sluggishness and occasionally the car going into limp home mode. when the car was driving ok when you put you foot down you would occasionally have a plume of black smoke from the exhaust, however there have been no issues with the oil consumption. I have had the car regularly serviced which includes topping up and changing of oil. The only other thing is having to top up the coolant regularly (every 6-8 weeks or 1000 miles)
Can anyone help as my garage has no idea and I need to fing the underlying problem before I shell out for another new turbo.

Are the turbos genuine items or cheaper alternatives?

I currently have the same problem on my a4, problem is not with the electronic control actuator as this has been proved to be working ok by disconnecting the control rod between it & the turbo, the problem is the rod that goes into the turbo will only turn a limited amount probably due to build up of carbon inside, this means when you give it the beans the control rod cannot move as far as the actuator is telling it to so it goes into limp mode.
