Fuel flap wont lock is this normal?

Good morning guys,

I made a quick search but could find any results so i thought id ask around for some expert advice :p

I got a Audi S3 2007 and i have noticed that the petrol flap does not lock? surely a car like this the petrol flap is locked to prevent people from stealing my fuel? I mean the petrol cap itself isnt locked either, you could just open the flap and turn the cap and take fuel if you wanted too???

Anyways does this mean i need a new fuel flap from audi?
Or could it be something wrong with the locking mechanism?

Hello Will,

I have a 2009 A3 8P TDIe Sport and the fuel flap is operated in conjunction with the doors/boot locks. If they’re locked so is the fuel flap; there is no independent lock for it.

Yeah, if the doors are locked then the fuel door should be too. If it's not, might need some investigating to see why.
 
Hi Willz!

Literally just had the same problem on mine this week. The fuel flap solenoid had gone... mine actually managed to lock shut! Luckily there is a manual release in the boot!

Anyways they are approx £13-£15 from Audi to replace. You can do the job yourself but I've had a busy week so cost me an hours labor at a local specialist garage.

Hi The fuel lock does not come into play till you dead lock the car,by pressing twice on the Key fob. Hope this helps
 
That's not true, the flap lock, as in solenoid, works inconjunction with single remote lock signal, not double.

If you want to test the flap lock, just leave the flap open, then lock the car & you'll see the bar slide out.

You don't have to double lock any Audi.... The deadlocks operate whenever you lock it with just one press of the remote.
 
Mine also does not lock, been through two MOT's with it like that and nobody has spotted it. About time I fixed it. Where is the solenoid located? How is it replaced?

Remove the right-hand rear interior trim. See the locking pin actuator. Disconnect the wiring (check it for breaks and/or corrosion on the pins). Slacken the two retaining screws by two turns, and then slide the actuator forwards to release it from the body panel. The pin may be jammed or perhaps the solenoid coil has failed. You can test it outside the car by applying 12volts. Be careful, it moves very rapidly, so keep your hands out of the way.

Thanks for all the comments guys, but ive locked the car and still no luck, the flap can be opened even when the car is fully locked.
I will check next time to see if the bar thing slides out when i press the lock button, If it doesn't slide out it means i need a new solenoid? or locking mechanism?

Hope its as easy as you all say it is :D

Willz, this is a very simple locking mechanism. A steel pin, actuated by a 12volt solenoid just moves forward to engage a hole in the fuel-cap to lock it closed. Either the pin is frozen in the actuator, or the solenoid coil has failed, or the pin is not centred in the hole, or there is a connection problem. Should be obvious if you take the actuator out and have a good look. Maybe a case of 'WD40'?. Good luck.

I have the same problem on mine, would someone be kind enough to provide the part number for the solenoid? I have a 2009 3DR 8P3. :racer:

I think I found it, is this part number for a 3 door or 5 door? 8P4 862 153
 
I have a working solenoid here if interested.
 
I had the same problem. Solenoid and central convenience ECU were replaced under warranty but problem was not solved for over a year, until I contacted Ross-Tech for some advice who gave me the solution after sending them some logs.
I had changed settings for auto closure of windows and roof with VagCom but I took those from a forum I cannot remember that were probably not for my car. Audi service resetted all settings and everything was fixed. Then, I did the auto closure mod correctly with the long coding helper.

I'm in Prague so I would need it to be posted here, so I may as well buy new from Audi as they aren't expensive.

In case this is of use to anyone, here are the part numbers as confirmed by Audi:

2 door part # 8P0 862 153 A
4 door part # 8P4 862 153

Replaced the faulty solenoid over the weekend, it was a 20 minute job, here is a quick How To in case it is useful to anyone;

- In the boot, remove the parcel shelf, boot carpet, flip seats forward and then remove the right hand side interior trim.
- Disconnect and remove the BOSE amp to reveal the solenoid
- Using a good pair of pliers, loosen the 2 securing screws by 2 turns, then slide the solenoid forwards (towards the front of the car)
- Extract the faulty solenoid
- Swap the clip and red plastic manual lock release wire to the new solenoid
- Install the new solenoid, carefully lining up the locking bar into the small hole at the fuel cap
- Secure in place, reconnect the wire and confirm if working by locking / unlocking the car
- Re-install BOSE amp and all interior trim parts

Not sure what your problem might be.
It could be the solenoid or the convenience module or even something else.
Audi reseted my settings to factory and problem was solved.
Not sure why yours is not working.
