This was done on a V6 ASB engine, may differ for 4 cylinder diesels and petrol models.

Parts needed

Fuel Filter - 4F0-127-435-A
Flathead screwdriver
VCDS (easiest way of refilling the filter)
Some spare diesel (if you don't have VCDS)

Start by removing your engine cover

Now unclip each clip shown in the picture, the blue arrow points at the metal clip which pulls out (not shown as I had this removed)

I advise wearing gloves as there will be some diesel spillage

Pic of pipes removed, I also removed the ducting between the MAF and engine for more access, this is held on with 2 jubilee clips

Pull the black circle fitting off the filter, also remove the 10mm bolt from the black cylinder also shown in the pic

Make sure everything is on tight and the black circle fitting is pushed down tight into the filter

Start Up

Easiest way of doing this is through VCDS, go into Engine - Output Tests and look for the below, let this run for 30-45secs. Engine should fire. If not, prime it again

For reference, I tried to start the car with the empty filter, this is what (didn't!) happen. The car eventually will start if doing it this way although it will be sore on your starter motor and battery so I recommend either filling the new filter with diesel manually or doing the VCDS output test.

You will also get a EML and engine fault code if you try to start it.

Code:

Audi techs just keep starting the engine until it fires up! Have to say I've not had the fault code EML light on after changing the filter, I've only done it a couple of time on the A6, and it due next month so will keep eye out on the fault codes.

I wasn't expecting a fault but checked out of curiosity. VCDS is the easiest way of getting the car going again.

Filling the fuel filter with injector cleaner also works and gives them a nice meaty blast of cleaner

Great guide Chris :) .

I filled my fuel filter before fitting new, IIRC I also slacked the bleed nut on fuel filter when running VCDS just to aid any air to be pushed out.

Bumping an old post as just done this for the first time, and the instructions are spot on. The wife's happy as well as save a few ££££!!
How often should you replace the filter?
