Turbo upgrade :)

Gas flow dynamics are complex, but simply put, a short restriction is better than a long one. The gas "drags" on the walls of the pipe, and a smaller pipe flowing the same amount of air means the air travels at a higher speed, causing more drag.

A good example is your exhaust. The paths inside the turbocharger, the wastegate and turbine itself are tiny, perhaps in the region of 40mm, but a 45mm long exhaust all the way to the back of the car would seriously choke the engine, so you go 2.5" or larger.

Similarly the turbocharger boost exit pipe is 50mm, but going up to 57 or 63mm for the long pipe run round to the the manifold will certainly help when power climbs. The S3 for instance has bigger charge pipework than the normal A3 models.

I see, well that would make sense.

So I suppose I should I look at increasing the diameter of mine.

I've decided that I'm going to go with Unicorn for tuning as they've impressed me so far. Rick has suggested going for 440 injectors in place of the red top 345s as they'll be at their limit at about 290hp.

yep i think that makes sense, though if your still on your 4 bar pressure regulator the 345's become 400cc, so probably not too far away from whats needed?

Yes, I am still on the 4 bar pressure regulator so I'll discuss this with Unicorn before I purchase any replacement injectors.

A few numbers float around, but yes thats one of them.

For 300hp i think the saab reds on 4bar will be enough. If hes going for say 350 though, then it will help to have bigger ones fitted.

I had my red tops cleaned and flow tested and they were all 345...

So do I need to increase the size of my intercooler hoses? It's a job that I could do without to be honest!

If you want to maximise power and flow, yes.

It'll work without changing them however. Essentially you just end up with a larger pressure drop across the pipework. That means the turbos working harder than it needs to and making more heat etc, OR your losing a couple psi of boost, depending on how you look at it.

I think there might be some posts in the 8L section from either badger5 or Rtech with some graphs showing the pressure drop etc over the 50mm pipework and smaller intercooler, vs larger pipework and bigger cooler.

Thats why i got rid of them as im going to be over the 350, im thinking either 440's or 550's

RTech talks about it here:

http://r-techperformance.co.uk/vag/...lf-audi-seat-skoda/1-8t-stage-2-tuning-guide/

Take note though, that the 75mm "wellycooler" is quite a squeeze to fit, the smaller 550x230x65 one i used goes in a lot easier.

Will the wellycooler go in with A/C removed and trimmed crash bar ??

Not on a standard bumper if it's the same size as mine.

slepy: pretty sure yours is a wellycooler.

I'm about to mock up my slightly smaller one today, so i'll post up the pipework i've used once i've done it.

IIRC it is 60x30 with 73mm pipework.
It is well too tall for a standard b5 bumper. I have it as close to bonnet as possible but it was still sticking out at the bottom. Even the fiberglass bumper is just enough to cover it from underneath.

Yeh, mines only 230mm high, so fits quite nicely.

Mocked it all up today but i'll stick it in another thread just so folk can find it in future.

So... is my 50mm intercooler going to need replacing or should I just increase all of the pipework and use reducers to make the connection to the intercooler? I know ideally I should upgrade but is it essential for the sort of figures that I'm aiming for (290HP ish)?

i'd say your really pushing it at 290ish on 50mm pipework and intercooler.

The S3 had 60mm pipework on its intercoolers, and its only making 225hp!

Similarly the RS4 with 380hp had 60mm intercooler pipework (each intercooler is only flowing half the total air) and that was upgraded over the S4's 50mm pipes.

Ok, cheers. I'll get a larger intercooler ordered then. How do you rate the quality of yours?

The old GT28R (GT2560R) was beyond repair so I've ordered a brand new one for delivery Monday.

I will be replacing the cam chain tensioner gasket over the weekend, after this I plan to get a new downpipe back exhaust system installed and then MOT.

What are peoples thoughts about performance catalytic converters? Any preferences?

my exhaust guy supplied and fitted one when he did my downpipe.

Go 200cell if you want to pass MOT's and get the biggest core you can.

Just one thing. Yesterday on FB, Niki from rtech said that there are two different types of coolers.

One is bar and plate and second is tube and fin. He says that he sees high temps on tube and fin ones and cars with them don't make good power. No idea how you can tell the difference though. They all look the same to me! Wonder which one I have

Bar and plate front. Tube and fin rear.

Cheers for the info Slepy. I have seen a few sites that specify the design (bar and plate or tube and fin). I'll make sure that the one I get is bar and plate.

I replaced the cam chain tensioner gasket and half moon seal yesterday. The old seal was looking worse for wear and leaking down the back of the cylinder head. I was planning on getting more photos and doing a bit of a write up but time was against me unfortunately.

That's a good price. Is that from turbodynamics?
