budget coilovers any good?

You get what you pay for with cheap coil overs... most I have seen tend to leak after a while, piston rods are quite spindly and a pot can bend them, ride can a lot more harsh than more expensive ones etc...

Biggest issue with coil overs is trying to adjust the ride height after a year or so... the adjusters are made of cheese and seize on breaking when you want to raise the height etc... get this a lot trying to dyno low cars...

60mm drops require short dampers typically... these are not normally cheap... 60mm on std dampers would be riding the bump stops, 60mm on a coil over would give little travel and there are issues with lowering that much on A3's and S3's alike... ARB's are a problem... the over the driveshaft ARB's on A3's rub the driveshaft and can also hit the chassis leg if too low plus this buggers up handling completely as the roll centers will be massively out due to the angle of the suspension arms...

cheers tuffty, thought it was something along those lines... as for the coilovers i may just go for some springs then, which set will give me the most drop once settled or are they all about the same?

would really like the arches to at least just cover the top of the 18's.... could i change out the top mounts for say another 10mm drop?

Here's mine on Bilstein B8 dampers and 30mm Apex springs... 18" RSTT (OE) wheels

nice thread dude, now you have me thinking again...ive fitted tons of sets of coilovers just dont wanna wreck the handling and was curious about horror stories and extra parts i keep hearing about... shorter drop links are another thought if i were to go that route...

i think tuffty's sits just about right though and the springs are only 120 nuggets.... decisions decisions...

Some coilovers require shorter drop links for S3's etc as the spring seats go lower... the mounting bracket on the strut is lower than normal dampers... most I have seen though you have to be careful how low you go as the offset on some wheels means the tyre contacts the spring adjusters... these drop links are 'normally' supplied with the coilovers as a set but have heard a few stories where they didn't... using std drop links in this case means the ARB then hits the suspension arm if too low...

As with most things in life you get what you pay for.

If you want to go low on the S3 8L then coilovers are the only option really but then you'll also need rear adjustable tie bars which does put the cost up.

Springs and shocks will give you a more comfortable ride quality and something like the AP kit you looked at won't break the bank either.

Let me know if I can be any help with info or prices.

before you go ordering on ebay make sure you call them up to make sure they have them in stock! i got caught out trying to buy budget ones, everyone i ordered them from didn't have them in stock and left it a few days before telling me (i ended up being messed around for a total of 6 weeks). DPM ended up sorting me out a AP kit a day after i ordered them, very helpful!

This thread seems quite fitting as I've just bought and fitted some ta technix coilies on my s3. I got them off ebay for a mere £200 delivered from germany (they are listed as fitting a3 8l quattro I think). I've had experience with ta's on different cars before and wasn't disappointed this time either. Theres not a huge scope to go real low as it seems i'm only about 30-40mm and almost at the bottom of the adjustment at the fronts (although the helper springs are still in at the moment), and to go lower on the rears i'd have to take the adjuster platforms out but I'm not aiming to go real low so i'm not too bothered by that. At the moment mine sits very similar to how tufftys sits on the bilsteins shocks and apex springs. The ride is spot on, firm but not too harsh or unforgiving and a huge improvement on the worn standard stuff that it was on. Its ideal for me as my s3 is my daily driver and will only see some enthusiastic road use and not likely any track abuse.

I did go for rear camber arms too which I got from s3dave for about £185 delivered. So uprated adjustable suspension with a nice ride for less than 400 on an s3 is achievable contrary to what most will tell you. Also after doing my research I opted for leon cupra r top mount bushes and new top mount bearings too (about £60 more) but thats not essential. Its a lot of work to do yourself in a day (I did it all in 6 hours) and i'm lucky to have access to a ramp and tools so I guess thats a bonus as it cost me nothing to fit, but if tackled in a weekend with a friend its probably not so bad.

I think if you're on a budget its not as much of a gamble as you might think, you could be surprised at the end result for the relatively low cost spent. Yes some will question how long they last but the quality is at least adequate to last 3 years at a low or average yearly mileage i'd say.

well ive now gone for the ones i listed at the start, budget coilovers on the way... i such a cheap skate lol! also booked in at amd for a remap on saturday i think after that its just wheel spacers adjustable tie bars and some arb's to get her where i want her. does the r32 arb give more clearance?

Sorry to drag up an old thread but it's been 2 years and I'm wonder how well your eBay coilovers lasted??
