Out of interest, does anyone know if the 2.0TDI engines used in the US are produced in the US or are they produced in the same Audi factory in Hungary as all the 2.0TDI engines used in Europe in Audi, VW, SEAT and Skoda models.

All I have got so far is its Type EA189 R4 Common Rail TDI engines 2009 onwards, worldwide

Sometimes I agree ignorance is bliss...enjoy your S3

I am not 100% sure but the engine you have is different, if it has no additive filler next to the fuel filler then you're fine...

Just out of interest, have they broken the law I wonder?

Does the relevant test specifically ban the car from having separate software for testing and normal use?

Not defending what they have done. Just a thought.

We are so so sorry that our shareholders wont be getting their dividend this year !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Scheiße
Why talk negatively about the shareholders? - it's not their fault.

The CEO is standing down, although no doubt he gets a nice pay off.
I didn't see that reported. Which guy is it - Germany or US.?

Maybe one positive outcome from this. People will realise that the whole diesel issue has been hype. It's filthy stuff. Maybe low on CO2 but it's the particulates that make our cities stink.

It affects some cars without adblue (hence no filler), in fact most of those sold in the US affected don't have adblue. Not really possible to say at this stage which, if any, EU cars are affected.

This has been known for a while, regardless of any limits being broken. I live in a rented flat with a shared car park, or I'd have gotten myself an electric car by now, but I just have nowhere to charge one at home. It's my intention that my A3 will be the last internal combustion engined car that I own.

Exactly, and the smog haze in many cities is mostly from NOx emissions, which diesels are particularly bad for.

It could be the demise of diesel, or in coming years diesel owners will be hit hard, I was planning to get a diesel next, but in the long term could be a financial mistake.
That said it may be a start of a change towards really hitting big engines really hard.
Media hype though will be the biggest instigator of it costing Joe public more in the end.
As for the sudden appearance of 22k deaths a year in the UK over car fumes, exactly how to they determine this???????
I do know this could be the start of a big change for us petrol heads :( and not for the good :(

There's a bit of confusion here I think with the US vs EU/UK diesels and emissions. Have uploaded to Dropbox the training materials on both the original 2.0l TDI and the current. Got these off the US erwin site when I was grabbing all the rest of the pdfs. Am sure it's against copyright, but I think Audi have other issues at the moment. Anyway my 2015 A3 TDI has adblue but there are comparisons on emission standards in these later on in the docs.
Let me know if somehow you can't get into the folder.
Still happy with the car though.
Cheers.

Just a quick note on what I already saw which may explain why this is just the 2.0l TDI:
"The SCR system on the A3 TDI uses a solenoid driven
diaphragm pump to deliver the fluid to the injector instead of a motor driven pump as seen in the other TDI models. (Q7,
A6, A7, A8, Q5)."
Presumably this diaphragm pump was easier to manipulate than the motor one which would be more obvious if it does nothing during testing on the road. All speculation of course.

We mess with the ecu we get a possible td1 flag and kiss our warranty good bye, if vw messes with the ecu they get a potential 18 billion dollar fine and possible criminal charges...oh the irony.. :D

And what do you suggest we do about all the lorries, buses and trains that also powered by large diesel engines. Ban them all from cities?

I'm open minded about most things and that includes global warming.
I drive an S3 8V sportback and have a mk2 golf gti 16v

It doesn't look like you care about global warming much from the cars you drive, as neither are very environmentally friendly regarding their fuel consumption!!! :whistle2:

I thought it was quite innovative - a piece of software that detects when the car is being tested and then tells itself to be on its best behaviour for 5 minutes. Genius !!

I have the 2.0 TDi and am not worried about this in the slightest.

Well Done Software Boys I say - nice to be on the frontfoot for once with all these Authority Rules and Regulations.

I was selling my 2 l Tdi next month, so out of interest checked the latest offer from WBAC and the value has not dropped....

Yes, they've started doing it in Central London.

Yep in Central London from 2020!

VAG are the first to put their hands up. This is the tip of the iceberg.....others will follow!

Maybe this is the reason for cheap diesel?! Beginning of the end for the Diesel engine. Hybrid petrol technology is where the motor industry is going!!

Most will go the way MINI/BMW face done with their 'twinPower Turbo' petrol engines. Wife has the 1.2 turbo and it's a belter of a wee engine.
@Bristlehound will hopefully back me on these wee power plants??
