Hi everyone, first post and an embarrassing one at that, I previously had an audi a3 140bhp, went on to a bmw 320d hated it got a leon 140bhp then missed the quality of audi... so just got myself a a3 sportback sline quattro, only a 55 plate not got as much money as some of you guys. I was under the impression it was a 170 one of the reasons why I got, but im not 100% now if it is. I know there should be the sticker in the boot but its all faded as tho its been peeled off, it doesnt have a service book with the info on the front either. Can anyone check with the reg somehow. Sorry embarrassing I know.

Cheers lads... its not giving me any bhp figures, but are the emissions any different between the two maybe that could solve this.

Here you go. It's a 140.

Thanks very much!! Without swearing im well
Peed it was advertised as a 170 for the money I payed I couldve got alot newer 140 with less miles or even something different altogether. Dunno wether to sell and get a a4 170.. would there be much difference in a mapped 140 to a mapped 170 obvs one would be 180ish and one 200+ but would youfeel it , if not mights just keep it

Yeah you'd know the difference between a mapped diesel.

not 100% but think the 170's have the straight exhaust ends (usually chrome or maybe just s-line) whereas the 140's have down facing end pipes, obviously unless its modded lol

I'd complain to the seller. Have you got a copy of the advert and paperwork? Doesn't V5C mention bhp or engine code?

Id be more than happy to name and shame the garage as im having a few probs with it too.. needs a new window regulator and the dmf vibrates every now and then, actually taking them to court over this costing me £60 court fees, wonder if I can do them even more with false advertisement... the autotrader siteunder tech specs/ performance and economy it showed 170...... going back to what I said ive had three 140's all been mapped to 180ish I was hoping id got myself a 170 then have it mapped to around 200 should I just keep this or would there be much of a difference between the two when both mapped

Give me a message if you need any help with court papers or preparing a court case. I've taken BMW, Evans Halshaw and a small dealership to court over cars, I tend to know what I'm talking about.

Id be glad to. Dont know if its against any forum rules tho. And I deffo dont wanna be getting banned from here as so far its full of top lads that just wanna help!

If anyone could chime in and maybe help me to decide to keep itagainot itll put my mind at ease.... is there really that much of a difference between a mapped 140 v mapped 170, I know the other mapped 140s ive had at times I just wanted that bit extra thats why I searched and searched to find a decent 170 turns out it isn't :( is there really any point in selling on to try and find a 170 again or is there just not that much difference?

You've paid for a 170, that was advertised as the better engine, under the trades description and sales of goods and services act 1979, you are entitled to either reimbursement of the rough price difference or depending on the circumstances, reject the car altogether.

Yes, all. Evans Halshaw sent me a letter a week before giving up because their case couldn't match up to mine.

You keep asking about the difference, i replied a few posts up.
Yes you will notice the difference, and most tuners won't/or will advise against it, on a 140 as they are known a chocolate turbos compared to the 170.

yeah you would notice the difference, i tested a mapped 140 before settling on my mapped 170, i would say the difference is similar between a standard and mapped of the same car e.g. 20%

im hoping it all gets sorted dom, trading standards put me thro to citizens advice where they put me thro the steps and showed me my rights etc, yesterday they recieved the final letter before court proceedings which hopefully if theve any sense they dont wanna go thro with it as theres no way they can win. If im allowed ill post the garage's web adress as they had plenty of nice audis s3's e.t.c dont want anyone else in my shoes. Think im just gunna keep her as car shopping was stressfull enough and tbh she drives well and ive already started wasting money on it as the miss says lol. Thanks alot lads top forum this

Please check the terms and conditions of the dealership you bought it from. It'll usually include the following clause;

Jurisdiction

  1. Any dispute regarding this agreement will be governed by English Law and will be subject to the jurisdiction of the Courts of England and Wales.
Thus meaning, you need to pull your finger out and realise they are not going to go down without a fight. Companies hope you give up, and they'll drag it out. In the end, what do they lose? Nothing.

Call autotrader and ask for a history copy of the advertising. False advertisement is illegal and that how my car was sold. And you are in your rights to ask for compensation. I did and I got the cash

Is it possible spec was auto generated by auto trader? I've seen a lot of cars on there mis described and I'm pretty sure it's down to their selling wizard providing incorrect defaults.

Car was advertised as 170bhp not 140bhp. It's not buyer's fault in any case.

Perhaps, just trying to point out it may not have been the case that the seller was deliberately mis advertising. I've not seen the advert but if the only reference to the bhp was in the technical details section which is pre-populated then I suspect the principles of caveat emptor will apply.

Sting them for whatever you can mate I'd be well peed off if I was sold a car 30bhp short!

I wouldn't keep the car on principle, but then I'm a stubborn git.

In all seriousness though, i would reject it purely on principle and the fact that you have mentioned one or two things wrong with it.

There are plenty of nice 170's out there being sold by reputable garages, why let those sharks who sold it to you get away with it, give it back.

If the OP wants to reject the car, he must act ASAP. In my experience, no more than 14-21 days after the car sale. Yes you are completely correct on the moral principle of it though.

OP, do you have any update?

Going on the known problems of the 140 BKD, I would guess that the dealer was pulling a fast one.
On that basis and any future future problems with the head, I would bin it as soon as possible.
Sticker on the boot floor missing, no log book = smells of s***e...!

only update i can give is im going to be keeping her, im starting to like it and ive spent abit of money on it mod wise. As for an update regarding the garage i would never touch again ( am i allowed to post a link to there site so everyones aware not to buy from here?) ive got to await there response from my finaly letter before i can open a court case as i had to set a deadline giving them a final chance to give there say and respond.
Jake it does have a logbook dude i just havent got mine through yet not had it long dvla move slowly, and the sticker wasnt delibarately removed it looked worn so couldnt really make anything out, its immaculate inside and out dont want people thinking ive a shed, i didnt know about the window regulater as when i drove it the air con was on (thats probably why!) didnt hear no flywheel vibrations either it was only the next door on my way to work, however they obvs knew about it and they knew about the regulator as when i took the door panel off theyd disconnected it from the motor! so all in all yeah im liking the car BUT im ****** its not the 170 which is what i specifically looked for and for they money i payed couldve got one or something different and newer and they clearly new about the faults since they tried to cover one up so i will be paying the court fees once there deadline is up. Got a few friends to make me some invoices for the work that ill be sending off to court..... there very nice quotes ;)
